49ers open as slight favorites over Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII

The 49ers open as favorites over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.

The San Francisco 49ers are set for a rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. Their first meeting in Super Bowl LIV to conclude the 2019 season finished with a 31-20 Chiefs win. Early odds have the 49ers as the favorites to avenge that defeat.

BetMGM has San Francisco listed as 1.5-point favorites over the Chiefs on the opening line. With two weeks to go until the game though there’s plenty of time for that line to move.

The 49ers have been favored in all three of their playoff games, including by 9.5 over the Packers in the divisional round and 7 over the Lions in the conference championship game.

They’ve yet to cover a spread after a pair of three-point victories. They’ll need to cover this one against the Chiefs if they want to get a win and their sixth Lombardi Trophy.

49ers will face Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII

The #49ers will face the Chiefs again in Super Bowl LVIII.

The 49ers and Lions on Sunday evening were squaring off for a chance to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. Kansas City downed the Ravens 17-10 Sunday afternoon in Baltimore to punch their ticket out of the AFC.

Detroit looked to be in line to face the defending Super Bowl Champions after going ahead 24-7 over the 49ers at halftime. San Francisco battled back though and outscored Detroit 27-7 in the final 30 minutes to steal a 34-31 win and punch their ticket to the NFL’s final game.

This sets up a rematch of Super Bowl LIV, which Kansas City won 31-20.

Kickoff from Allegiant Stadium is set for Feb. 11 at 3:30pm Pacific Time.

CB Charvarius Ward reveals Chiefs game plan vs. 49ers in Super Bowl

49ers CB Charvarius Ward, who was on the Chiefs team that beat San Francisco in the Super Bowl, revealed via @tidalleague what KC’s game plan was:

While several 49ers are on a quest to avenge their Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs after the 2019 season, cornerback Charvarius Ward finds himself in a different boat. Ward was part of that Kansas City team that came back from a 20-10 deficit to defeat the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.

In an appearance on ‘Third and Long,’ Ward revealed that the 49ers played right into the Chiefs’ defense’s hands when they abandoned their run game in the fourth quarter.

“The game plan was to put the ball in Jimmy (Garoppolo)’s hands, man,” Ward told Third and Long host, 49ers defensive tackle Arik Armstead. “I hate to say this. Our game plan was to put the ball in Jimmy’s hands, but Kyle Shanahan, he was just calling run after run. For some reason in the fourth quarter they stopped running the ball, and we kinda took over a little bit.

“I don’t want to say too much about it because I’m part of the organization now. Going into the game we were extremely confident, but once y’all came out doing all that y’all were doing, we were like ‘(expletive) these boys are kinda good. We gotta like man up and thud up.’ And that’s kinda like what we did in the fourth quarter.”

It was clear in the fourth quarter that Kansas City was focused on stopping the 49ers’ rushing attack. Defensive end Terrell Suggs, at that point in his career a run stopper, spent a ton of time on the field to try and help a defense that allowed 88 rushing yards on 12 first-half carries. Through three quarters the 49ers had 109 rushing yards on 17 attempts. San Francisco won the third quarter 10-0 to take a 20-10 lead into the final 15 minutes.

That’s when the Chiefs’ plan to put the ball in Garoppolo’s hands worked. By selling out to stop the run they pushed Shanahan into a pass-happy set of play calls. The 49ers in the fourth quarter ran it five times for 39 yards.

After the Chiefs made it 20-17, the 49ers ran it once with RB Raheem Mostert for five yards. Then they threw it twice, both incomplete, and punted.

Kansas City then made it 24-20 with 2:44 to go. Mostert again opened the drive with a 17-yard run. A false start on WR Emmanuel Sanders made it first-and-15, but the 49ers still managed to get a first down at the Chiefs’ 49 after a couple throws. They never ran it again and turned it over on downs, effectively ending the game.

It was pretty clear during the game what Kansas City (and any team playing the 49ers) wanted to do to defend them, and Ward’s confirmation just makes it all the more baffling that the 49ers would so willingly play into their hands.

Perhaps a more dynamic passing attack with Brock Purdy under center will help the 49ers avoid becoming too one-dimensional because of defensive personnel.

Takeaways from embarrassing 49ers loss to Chiefs

Takeaways from a 49ers blowout loss to the Chiefs.

The 49ers got smoked at home by the Kansas City Chiefs in a game that may have bigger implications than just a Week 7 loss. San Francisco looked outcoached, overmatched, and in general like a team that has no business thinking about a trip to the Super Bowl.

They have a week to get right against the Rams before heading into the Bye week.

Here are some takeaways from Sunday’s 44-23 loss:

49ers injury report: Nick Bosa, Trent Williams, Jimmie Ward return to practice for 49ers

The #49ers got a bunch of key starters back in practice as they begin on-field preparations for the Chiefs.

The 49ers started off Week 7 with a mixed bag of good and bad injury news. Given their injury woes this season though, a mixed bag that includes some positivity on the health front is a substantial improvement over the first six weeks when the injury hits kept coming with no substantial pieces of optimism.

Wednesday’s practice to open the team’s Week 7 preparations though featured a handful of good news with several starters returning to the practice field, including one slightly unexpected addition.

Here’s the Wednesday participation report:

What boxes did 49ers check in ESPN’s 7-round mock draft?

The #49ers check some important boxes in a full 7-round mock draft from ESPN.

There aren’t a lot of wrong directions the 49ers can go in this year’s draft. They have a handful of needs, but no spots where they absolutely need to select a starter. Prioritizing their needs by position yields a slew of different results. It’s clear they simply need to find quality players who can help fill out the roster in the coming years as their highest-priced players push out some other talent.

A seven-round mock draft from ESPN’s Jordan Reid charts a good path for San Francisco’s nine picks. They hit a few of their ‘top’ needs early, but there’s a distinct eye toward the future with the choices which will be a key aspect of this year’s draft.

There are a few notes before we dive into the picks.

First, the 49ers could and probably should go with an edge rusher earlier than they do in Reid’s mock. It’s supposed to be a deep class, but San Francisco could find a significant difference-maker if they go with a defensive end with one of their first couple picks.

It’s important to note as we get nearer to the draft that center Alex Mack isn’t a slam dunk to return in 2022. We saw long-time left tackle Joe Staley retire during the draft, so it’s definitely on the table. If Mack walks, the 49ers need to find a center who can fill that void for the next several seasons. Jake Brendel is the only other center on the roster, but Reid has San Francisco addressing that area early.

Reid also doesn’t have the 49ers selecting a tight end, which is a definite possibility with a handful of prospects that could be available on Day 2 or early in Day 3. Their offense could hit a new level if they find a good pass catcher to line up with George Kittle in two-tight end sets. They’ve been unsuccessful in finding that player in past years, so they could aim to fill that role via the draft.

To the picks:

Jimmy Garoppolo saw Trey Lance’s long TD pass coming

Trey Lance’s long TD pass was the highlight of the #49ers’ preseason opener, and Jimmy Garoppolo saw it coming the whole way.

Jimmy Garoppolo was one of the first players off the sideline to greet rookie QB Trey Lance after he unleashed an 80-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Trent Sherfield in the first quarter of the 49ers’ preseason opener against the Chiefs. He might’ve been one of the first players to meet Lance because he knew the touchdown was coming.

Garoppolo, who started Saturday’s game, told reporters after the game what he thought of Lance’s first professional touchdown.

“Oh, it was awesome. It was awesome,” Garoppolo said. “We kinda saw it coming, knowing the play and everything, watching Trent the whole time, and he broke the guy off. Trey put a beautiful pass out there. It was really cool.”

He also noted the play had two options with Brandon Aiyuk also open on a shorter route, but Lance chose the right throw.

Lance’s entire day didn’t go great, but that one play was a good example of why San Francisco selected him third overall in this year’s draft. If Lance continues making explosive plays like that while cleaning up some of the mistakes, he’s going to elevate the 49ers’ offense to a level we’ve yet to see during Kyle Shanahan’s tenure.

49ers vs. Chiefs: Everything learned from 49ers loss

Quick rundown of what we learned from the #49ers’ preseason loss to the Chiefs.

The 49ers lost their preseason opener to the Chiefs 19-16 at Levi’s Stadium on Saturday. While the games don’t count, there was plenty of important action to take note of as San Francisco prepares for the regular season.

Here’s what we learned during a back-and-forth, knockdown, drag-out brawl between the two clubs that went down to the final minute:

WATCH: Trey Lance finds Charlie Woerner for 34-yard completion

WATCH: Backed up against his own goal line, Trey Lance found TE Charlie Woerner for a huge gain. #49ers

Trey Lance’s fourth series started at the 49ers’ 1-yard line. He needed one play to give his team some breathing room. Instead of stuffing a run into the line, head coach Kyle Shanahan dialed up a play action look that left tight end Charlie Woerner wide open across the middle. Lance stepped up and threw a strike for a huge gain.
