Will Deebo Samuel play this week? Injury updates for 49ers WR

49ers WR Deebo Samuel is working through rib and oblique injuries. Here are the latest updates.

Brandon Aiyuk’s season-ending knee injury isn’t the only health issue the San Francisco 49ers are dealing with at wide receiver.

WR Deebo Samuel is also working through a couple of injuries. He has rib and oblique ailments he sustained in the 49ers’ Week 8 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Here is the latest on Samuel’s status for Sunday when the 49ers take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Central Florida.

Deebo Samuel injury update

Samuel is officially listed as ‘questionable’ on the team’s injury report. He was limited in all three practices during the week.

How long will Deebo Samuel be out?

The pair of injuries don’t appear to be serious. Samuel got through practice without any setbacks. If he’s unable to go in Week 10, it stands to reason he’ll be back in Week 11 when the 49ers host the Seattle Seahawks.

49ers WR depth chart

If Samuel is unable to go, rookie WR Ricky Pearsall would likely be thrust into a much bigger role. Samuel’s fellow WR Jauan Jennings is also listed as questionable with a hip injury. Jennings would step into a WR1 role if he’s active and Samuel isn’t. Behind them it’s a mixed bag. Rookie Jacob Cowing might see some time, but the team would more likely lean on veteran Chris Conley and second-year WR Ronnie Bell.

49ers may face Buccaneers QB making 1st-career start

Baker Mayfield missed the first two practices of the week for the Buccaneers.

The San Francisco 49ers may not be the most banged up team when they visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10.

While the 49ers’ practice participation report features a slew of names, Tampa Bay’s is also crowded and includes star wide receiver Mike Evans. Their other star WR, Chris Godwin, is already on IR for the season because of an ankle injury.

Most notable on Tampa Bay’s participation reports from Wednesday and Thursday was the inclusion of quarterback Baker Mayfield. He’s dealing with a toe injury that kept him out of both of the Buccaneers’ practices to start the week.

Mayfield on Wednesday told Bucs reporters in a press conference he’s “a little sore,” but also noted he expects to play Sunday.

If Mayfield is unable to go, the Buccaneers would turn to third-year signal caller Kyle Trask for his first-career start.

Trask was a second-round pick by Tampa Bay in the 2018 draft out of Florida. Across three seasons he has played in four games and thrown only 10 passes. He’s 3-for-10 for 22 yards. His only snaps this season came in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders when he took the two kneel downs to close out a 37-20 Buccaneers win.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan would surely love to avoid Mayfield, a player he said he wasn’t eager to face in the NFC championship game last season. Mayfield is even better this year than he was a season ago. He’s leading the NFL with 23 touchdown passes while completing 71.4 percent of his throws and averaging a career-best 7.6 yards per attempt.

Sunday’s game is one the 49ers need badly. It becomes an even bigger must-win if they’re facing a first-time starting quarterback.

Will Jordan Mason play this week? Injury updates for 49ers RB

49ers RB Jordan Mason is dealing with a shoulder injury. Here are the latest updates.

The San Francisco 49ers aren’t out of the woods yet with injuries in their offensive backfield.

RB Christian McCaffrey is expected to return in Week 10 when the 49ers take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but they may not have his backup Jordan Mason.

Mason was a breakout star for the 49ers offense while McCaffrey was out, racking up 685 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 134 carries. He injured his shoulder in the first half of the 49ers’ Week 6 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks and didn’t return to the game. Then he made it through Week 7 before re-aggravating the injury in Week 8 and missing the entire second half again.

Here’s the latest on Mason heading into Week 10:

Jordan Mason injury update

It looked like Mason was on track to play after being listed as a full participant in Wednesday’s practice. Thursday was a different story though with Mason being given a ‘limited participation’ designation, putting his status for Week 10 in doubt.

How long will Jordan Mason be out?

There’s no clear timeline for Mason to return from his AC joint sprain. He got through Week 7 without any issue, and he may still play in Week 10. It doesn’t appear as though the injury is serious enough for him to miss significant time. With McCaffrey returning, the team may opt to give Mason another week to fully heal. There’s no indicator he’s in danger of a long-term absence though.

49ers RB depth chart

McCaffrey will be atop the depth chart, and Mason figures to get some work spelling him as the reigning Offensive Player of the Year returns from Achilles tendinitis. If Mason can’t go, rookie RB Isaac Guerendo would be the next man up, followed by RB Patrick Taylor. Guerendo had his best game as a pro in Week 8, running 14 times for 85 yards and his first-career touchdown.

49ers injury update has some bad news for breakout star RB

Jordan Mason was a full go in Wednesday’s practice, but that wasn’t the case Thursday:

The San Francisco 49ers didn’t have many changes on their Thursday’ practice participation report.

It’s not a huge surprise that Thursday didn’t feature many differences from Wednesday since generally players limited to start the week will remain limited. Eight players were limited in Wednesday’s practice.

More noteworthy things on a practice report during the week are setbacks or players going the other direction toward less participation. San Francisco had a couple of those on Thursday’s participation report with running back Jordan Mason and safety Malik Mustapha showing up as limited participants after full practices Wednesday.

Mason is dealing with a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 6. He was listed as a full participant on Wednesday. Mustapha wasn’t on the report which indicates his calf injury happened at some point during the week.

It’ll be worth monitoring both closely Friday to see if their participation progresses.

Here’s Thursday’s report:

Did not participate

WR Chris Conley (hamstring)
DT Kevin Givens (groin)
CB Charvarius Ward (not injury related – personal matter)

This trio is trending toward not playing in Sunday’s game.

Limited participation

DE Nick Bosa (hip)
OL Jon Feliciano (knee)
DL Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)
WR Jauan Jennings (hip)
RB Jordan Mason (shoulder)
RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles)
K Jake Moody (ankle)
S Malik Mustapha (calf)
WR Deebo Samuel (rib, oblique)
P Mitch Wishnowsky (back)

Mustapha and Mason showing up here is a little alarming. That the rest of the group, specifically Bosa, McCaffrey, Jennings and Samuel, didn’t have any setbacks is a good sign for their availability Sunday.

Full participation

LT Trent Williams
QB Brandon Allen (finger)
CB Renardo Green (ankle)

LB Dee Winters (concussion)

Good news for the 49ers that neither Green nor Winters suffered a setback.

Why 49ers were worried about facing Buccaneers in NFC championship game

Kyle Shanahan: Big Baker Mayfield guy.

The San Francisco 49ers punched their ticket to Super Bowl LVIII with a thrilling NFC championship game victory over the Detroit Lions.

While the Lions’ sensational first-half performance forced a dramatic comeback by the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium, Detroit nearly didn’t get out of the divisional playoffs after an eight-point victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday told reporters he wasn’t excited about the prospect of facing the Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield.

“I think Baker is a stud,” Shanahan said. “I think last year, I thought he was at the top of his game last year playing real well and this year I think he’s the same, if not better. I think he’s one of the main reasons I think they were a couple plays away from playing us in the NFC Championship last year. We were worried, real worried about him going into that game. He just got hotter as the whole year went. And he’s playing at such a high level right now.”

The 49ers saw Mayfield up close in Week 11 last season. He completed 29-of-45 throws for 246 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a 27-14 San Francisco victory at Levi’s Stadium. The numbers weren’t great, but he made some sensational throws in that game that helped paint a picture of what he might be capable of in a better offense.

This year, Buccaneers new offensive coordinator Liam Coen has gotten the most out of Mayfield. Even without his top two wide receivers, Mayfield managed to go into Kansas City in Week 9 and go 23-of-31 for 200 yards and two touchdowns.

Shanahan was worried about facing Mayfield in January, but now in Week 10 the 49ers will have to face him with their chances of playing next January hanging in the balance.

Christian McCaffrey injury update great news for 49ers

A positive Christian McCaffrey update after his return to practice.

The San Francisco 49ers are on the verge of getting running back Christian McCaffrey back in games.

McCaffrey, who has missed the entire season and been on IR since Week 2 with Achilles tendinitis, returned to practice Monday after the team opened his 21-day practice window.

That he returned to practice Monday was a positive update since he spent the Bye week ramping up his rehab with more intense workouts that simulated practices.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday told reporters the Monday session went well for McCaffrey, who experienced no pain after the post-Bye bonus practice.

McCaffrey is projected to be a limited participant Wednesday.

While full participation is preferable, that McCaffrey got through Monday pain-free is a great sign for his potential Week 10 return when the 49ers face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The next steps will be getting through three consecutive practices without any pain. McCaffrey’s return is essential to a potential 49ers playoff run, but they’re also unlikely to try and push him into action if he deals with even a minor setback in his recovery.

We’ll likely see limited sessions all week from McCaffrey, but they may give him a full go in Friday’s walk-through.

McCaffrey was the Offensive Player of the Year last season after leading the NFL with 339 touches, 1,459 rushing yards, 2,023 scrimmage yards and 21 touchdowns. His return will give the 49ers’ offense a boost after they struggled to score touchdowns without him in the first eight weeks.

If McCaffrey does play Sunday, he’ll be officially activated off IR on Saturday.

49ers schedule: Week 10 opponent won’t be a pushover

Get to know the basics about the 49ers’ Week 10 opponent:

The San Francisco 49ers open their final nine games of the regular season with a road trip to visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

For the 49ers, this Week 10 bout will determine the tenor of the rest of their season. A win keeps them in a tie for the top of the division. A loss puts them on the outside looking in at the NFC West, and at a wild card spot where the No. 7 seed belongs to the 6-3 Green Bay Packers.

Week 10 won’t just be a big one for the 49ers. Their opponent will also be entering with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s going on with the Buccaneers in 2024:

What did the Buccaneers do last game?

Tampa Bay visited the Kansas City Chiefs and fell 30-24 in overtime. Quarterback Baker Mayfield was impressive against one of the NFL’s stingiest defenses. He threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns, but he was outdueled by Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’s 291 yards and three touchdowns.

What’s the Buccaneers’ record?

The Bucs are now 4-5 after their loss to the Chiefs. They’re comfortably No. 2 in the NFC South ahead of the 2-7 Carolina Panthers and 2-7 New Orleans Saints. They’re now 2.0 games behind the division-leading Atlanta Falcons. In the NFC playoff race, the Bucs are 0.5 games behind the 49ers at No. 11 overall.

What’s the Buccaneers injury situation?

One of Tampa Bay’s issues during their three-game losing skid is their injuries at wide receiver. Chris Godwin is out for the year with an ankle injury, and Mike Evans is out for several weeks with a hamstring injury. Defensive lineman Greg Gaines was also out of Monday’s game with a calf injury.

Where do the Buccaneers rank in offense?

Even with the injuries the Bucs’ offense has been outstanding under the guidance of offensive coordinator Liam Coen. They rank No. 5 in total yards, No. 5 in yards per play and No. 3 in points per game. They posted 24 points vs. Kansas City — the second-highest output against them all season.

Where do the Buccaneers rank in defense?

It’s less pretty defensively for head coach Todd Bowles’s club. They’re No. 30 in the NFL in yards allowed per game and No. 30 in yards allowed per play. Their run defense is allowing 5.19 yards per play, which is tied with the New York Giants for the worst mark in the league. That makes it no surprise that the Buccaneers rank 28th in points allowed.

What happened last time the 49ers and Buccaneers played?

The 49ers are 20-6 all-time in the regular season vs. Tampa Bay, including wins in each of their last three matchups. Last time they played was in 2023 with the 49ers handling business at Levi’s Stadium and securing a 27-14 win. San Francisco also hosted the Buccaneers in 2022 and blew them out 35-7 in Brock Purdy’s first start at quarterback.

8 takeaways from 49ers’ 27-14 win over Buccaneers

8 takeaways from the #49ers’ win over the Bucs.

The 49ers have a huge three-game stretch coming up with two games against the Seahawks and another against the Eagles. For those games to come with maximum consequence though they needed to take care of business at home against a struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers squad.

They did just that with a 27-14 win where their stars shined once again, and got some help from an unexpected source on defense.

Here are our eight takeaways from the 49ers’ seventh win of the year:

49ers fear ACL injury for SS Talanoa Hufanga

Kyle Shanahan is “a little concerned” about an ACL injury for Talanoa Hufanga.

It sounds like 49ers strong safety Talanoa Hufanga suffered a bad knee injury during San Francisco’s win over the Buccaneers.

Hufanga exited in the third quarter after slipping while trying to make a tackle. He went to the medical tent immediately before being ruled out with a knee injury.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team will find out the extent of the injury Monday.

“A little concerned,” Shanahan said in his postgame press conference. “We don’t know for sure. Most likely it’s ACL, but we can’t confirm it so we’ll find out later.”

It’s not a great sign that Hufanga was ruled out so quickly after going down in the third quarter. However, until imaging is done the team won’t be able to confirm the extent of the injury.

Rookie safety Ji’Ayir Brown filled in for Hufanga and broke up three passes including an interception in the red zone.

The only other injury update Shanahan had immediately following Sunday’s game was that cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles suffered a shoulder injury. There was no additional info on the extent of that injury.

Brock Purdy was basically perfect in 49ers win over Bucs

It’s hard to be better than Brock Purdy was for the #49ers on Sunday:

Brock Purdy’s first career start was agains the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14 of the 2022 season. It went well for the then-rookie. His second game against the Bucs in Week 11 of this season went even better.

Purdy was stellar, completing 21-of-25 throws for 333 yards and three touchdowns. The 333 yards were his second-most ever, and his most in a win.

His stats worked out to a perfect 158.3 passer rating, which is the highest possible mark in that metric. Only 21 other players in NFL history have done that on 25-plus pass attempts.

Bills QB Josh Allen did it in Week 4 this year. Before that it was Tom Brady in the 2020 season. No 49ers QB has ever hit the 158.3 mark on that many attempts.

Joe Montana and Steve Young both accomplished the feat in the 1989 campaign, but they did so on far fewer attempts. Young went 11-of-12 for 188 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-20 Week 7 win against New England. Three weeks later in Week 10 it was Montana who hit a 158.3 passer rating by going 16-of-19 for 270 yards and three touchdowns against the Falcons in a 45-3 win.

Purdy will likely never be one of the two best QBs in 49ers history, but his outing Sunday against Tampa Bay is in the discussion as one of the finest single-game performances by any QB in team history.
