49ers sign 13 players to Reserve/Futures contracts

The San Francisco 49ers added 13 players to their roster on futures contracts as they begin gearing up for the 2021 season.

The San Francisco 49ers on Monday announced the signing of 13 players to Reserve/Futures contracts.

A Reserve/Futures contract means a player, provided they stay with the club through the entire offseason, will be on the 90-man roster and have a chance to compete for a spot on the active roster.

The list of 13 players signed by the 49ers included 10 who finished the season on the club’s practice squad. Here’s the full list:

CB Adonis Alexander
DL Josiah Coatney
S Chris Edwards
LB Jonas Griffith
DL Daeshon Hall
CB Tim Harris Jr.
FB Josh Hokit
WR Jauan Jennings
S Obi Melifonwu
WR Austin Proehl
OL Dakoda Shepley
WR Kevin White
OL Isaiah Williams

Alexander, Melifonwu and Proehl were the three who weren’t with the 49ers to end the 2020 season.

Alexander was a sixth-round pick by Washington in the 2018 supplemental draft. He played in nine games and registered four tackles as a rookie. The Rams picked up Alexander last offseason before cutting him in before the regular season began.

Melifonwu became a hot prospect in the 2017 draft after lighting up the combine. The UConn product wound up going in the second round, No. 56 overall, to the Raiders. He struggled in his rookie campaign though and played only five games. He suited up for two games with the Patriots in 2018, and New England waived him in April of last year.

Proehl was a seventh-round pick of the Bills in 2018, but spent most of his season on the Rams’ practice squad. He was released by Buffalo as part of final roster cuts and added to the Titans practice squad for a day before making his way to the Rams’ practice squad. Los Angeles cut him in April of 2019.

5 players added to 49ers active roster for season finale

The San Francisco 49ers will have 5 new players on the roster for their season finale vs. the Seattle Seahawks.

The 49ers rash of injury issues before their Week 17 matchup led to a number of additions to the active roster Saturday. San Francisco announced five players were added to the roster through various means.

Offensive lineman Tom Compton was added from the Injured Reserve list after missing three weeks with a concussion. He could see time at either center or right guard while the team continues to try and figure out the interior of their offensive line.

Defensive lineman Josiah Coatney and offensive lineman Isaiah Williams were both added from the practice squad as COVID-19 replacements. San Francisco has four players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Coatney will join the club as a COVID-19 replacement, but his real role will be adding depth along the defensive front with Javon Kinlaw and Kevin Givens both ruled out.

The 49ers also flexed wide receiver Jordan Matthews and kicker Tristan Vizcaino to the roster from the practice squad. Matthews has been with the practice squad on two separate occasions this year. He’ll provide depth with Trent Taylor, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk all out. Vizcaino will take over kicking duties for Robbie Gould after Gould went on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Kyle Shanahan, Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers future under center

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had interesting thoughts on Jimmy Garoppolo’s future with the team.

[jwplayer 9XFNYAPO-ThvAeFxT]

Jimmy Garoppolo is going to be the 49ers’ quarterback next season. Maybe. At least, that’s what head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday in a video conference with reporters when asked about the team’s quarterback situation for next season.

There’s some nuance required though when breaking down Shanahan’s full thoughts on Garoppolo and how the team will proceed under center.

Let’s start with his declaration that Garoppolo will be the quarterback next year, because it’s pretty cut and dry.

“Yes, I do believe Jimmy’s going to be our quarterback next year,” Shanahan said.

He was pressed on that, and asked if he’d commit with 100 percent certainty to Garoppolo starting Week 1 next season.

His answer became a talking point on various internet forums because it backed off a commitment to Garoppolo, but it also clearly explains the club’s thought process on the quarterback position going into the offseason.

Here’s the full quote:

Guys, you can’t say anything with certainty. You don’t sit here and make promises on anything. We build a football team. It’s your job to put the best team together year in and year out. People talk about Jimmy’s salary. Jimmy is like one of the middle quarterbacks in the league right now in terms of salary. That’s just how much they cost. So, it’s not like it’s something ridiculous or anything like that, so we can work all that out. Not to mention, look at Jimmy’s record when he’s been here. Jimmy, you can win with. He’s proven that. He’s proven he’s a starting quarterback in this league. We had a couple of other guys who got opportunities this year who played like they have a chance at times to be starting quarterbacks, but they did play like backups overall. C.J. [Beathard] played like he had ability to be a starting quarterback two nights ago. He also did that in 2017 in a few games that we had with him. I remember him playing like that versus San Diego, but Jimmy, there’s a reason his record is what it is and that’s why we paid for him to be our starting quarterback. To think that that’s ridiculous with where his contract is, this isn’t like the first year. That’s how much quarterbacks costs in this league and he’s right there. I don’t know the number, but I think it’s somewhere between like 13th and 19th. So, that’s nothing too big. That’s how much they cost. Now, you look into every avenue and you see if there’s something out there that can get you a ton better it’s the same answer for every position. But look at Jimmy, look what he’s done, look at where he’s at with us financially and we better have a very good answer if you’re going to find something better than that, because Jimmy’s shown in one year that he’s a guy who can take us to the Super Bowl and I also think Jimmy’s going to get a lot better the more he plays.

There’s no smoke and mirrors.

There’s no driving up trade value.

There’s no hidden agenda or commitment either direction.

Stripping this answer down to its core whittles it down to this: the 49ers believe they can win with Garoppolo, but they’ll move on from him if they think they can upgrade.

They’re not simply going to cut him because they can save $24.1 million on his scheduled $26.9 million cap hit. Doing so to get worse at quarterback is bad team-building.

On the other hand, keeping a worse quarterback for the sake of keeping him is also bad team-building.

Going into the 2021 offseason, Shanahan believes Garoppolo is the best option available to them. Perhaps a trade for a veteran materializes, or there’s a surprise cut at which point they’ll evaluate whether that presents an upgrade over what they have. If it does, they’ll make a move. If it doesn’t, they won’t.

It’s logical and should probably be how the club operates at every position. Expressing confidence in their current players while also being flexible enough to search for potentially better options isn’t the coach trying to put one over on fans, it’s just good roster management.

49ers add extra RB to practice squad with Raheem Mostert out

The former Stanford running back retired in 2018 before re-joining the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers are once again in a spot where they may have to shuffle their backfield. Raheem Mostert is out for the year with an ankle injury and Austin Walter is on the COVID-19 list, so San Francisco added running back Tyler Gaffney to their practice squad as an additional option in their injury-ravaged backfield.

Gaffney was a sixth-round pick of the Panthers out of Stanford in the 2014 draft. He’s also spent time with the Patriots and Jaguars. Gaffney hasn’t made his NFL debut yet, and retired in 2018 before making his way back into the league with the 49ers.

Jeff Wilson Jr. figures to lead the 49ers’ backfield in Week 16 vs. the Cardinals, but he’s dealing with the after effects of a high ankle sprain. Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon are also on the active roster, so Gaffney will give them some insurance should they encounter more injury issues.

49ers roster moves: Mark Nzeocha activated, 3 practice squad players elevated

The San Francisco 49ers activated LB Mark Nzeocha off Injured Reserve and elevated 3 off the practice squad as COVID-19 replacements.

The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday announced a couple of tweaks to their roster ahead of their Week 15 showdown with the Dallas Cowboys.

Linebacker and special teams ace Mark Nzeocha was activated off Injured Reserve after going on the list with a quad injury following the 49ers’ Week 3 win over the Giants. His practice window opened on Dec. 2, and he’ll make his return vs. Dallas.

Three other players were elevated from the practice squad to replace the trio of 49ers on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Tight end Daniel Helm, and offensive linemen Dakoda Shepley and Isaiah Williams will be up to replace running back Austin Walter, offensive lineman Colton McKivitz and tight end Charlie Woerner.

Helm saw action in three games for the 49ers earlier this season, but it was all on special teams. Shepley was signed late in camp and has worked at center. Interior line depth is thin for San Francisco so Shepley could wind up seeing time at either center or guard. Williams was signed to the practice squad Wednesday. The 2016 undrafted free agent has spent time with seven other NFL teams and hasn’t made his NFL debut.

49ers roster moves: 4 players moved up from practice squad ahead of Washington game

The 49ers roster got a shakeup on the offensive line, defensive line and in the secondary.

The 49ers on Saturday announced a series of roster moves leading up to their Week 14 matchup vs. the Washington Football Team. They signed two players off the practice squad, flexed another pair and added offensive lineman Tom Compton to Injured Reserve with a concussion.

Defensive lineman Alex Barrett and cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun were both signed to the active roster from the practice squad. Barrett has appeared in four games this season and posted three tackles while contributing on the defensive front and special teams. He’ll step into a defensive line missing Kevin Givens and likely missing DJ Jones.

Boddy-Calhoun was added to the practice squad prior to Week 13. Emmanuel Moseley is doubtful and K’Waun Williams is questionable so another body at corner will be helpful. Given Boddy-Calhoun’s experience in the slot it wouldn’t be a surprise if he spent time at nickel vs. Washington.

The two players flexed, which means they’ll go back to the practice squad after Sunday’s game, are defensive lineman Darrion Daniels and offensive lineman Dakoda Shepley.

Daniels is an undrafted rookie out of Nebraska who debuted with 15 snaps in Week 12 vs. the Rams. Shepley joined the club late in training camp after a strong rookie year in the Canadian Football League. The 49ers have struggled badly finding interior line help, so Shepley could wind up seeing action with Tom Compton and Hroniss Grasu both out. San Francisco could conceivably put Shepley at center and move Daniel Brunskill back to right guard if they’re confident enough in Shepley to start him.

Compton will go on IR and be forced to miss the next three weeks after sustaining his second concussion of the year vs. Buffalo. The earliest he’d be able to return is Week 17.

49ers release WR Jordan Matthews from practice squad

The San Francisco 49ers released veteran wide receiver Jordan Matthews from the team’s practice squad on Tuesday.

The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday released wide receiver Jordan Matthews from the team’s practice squad.

The six-year veteran had been providing depth at a position where the Niners have been hit heavily by injuries this season. However, much of the receiving corps’ injuries are now on the mend and their COVID-19 list is empty.

Matthews has played in 73 career games, hauled in 274 passes for 3288 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns. Earlier this season, Matthews appeared in 3 games for the Philadelphia Eagles and made four receptions for 33 yards. After he was cut by the Eagles, the 49ers signed him to their practice squad.  He was active for one game with the team but did not record any statistics.

49ers work out 3 DBs ahead of Week 13 matchup vs. Bills

The 49ers have a couple new injuries at cornerback that could force them to add a couple players to their depth chart.

[jwplayer OEEU7JXq-ThvAeFxT]

The 49ers on Wednesday held a tryout for three veteran defensive backs according to a release from the NFL. Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Denzel Rice and Coty Sensabaugh all worked out for the club as they navigate a couple injuries at the cornerback spot.

Jamar Taylor and Ken Webster both went on Injured Reserve after the 49ers’ 23-20 Week 12 win over the Rams. Taylor, who was starting at nickel corner, tore his ACL in the first half. Webster, a core special teams player, went down with a hamstring injury later in the game.

San Francisco now has four healthy cornerbacks on the 53-man roster, and two more on the practice squad.

Boddy-Calhoun was an undrafted free agent who debuted with the Browns in 2016. He spent three years in Cleveland and parts of last year with the Colts and Texans. In his four NFL seasons he’s played in 46 games with 22 starts with most of his work coming at safety.

Rice has yet to start an NFL game and played in only 19 across three NFL seasons. He’s been out of the league since he appeared in 12 games for Cleveland and Buffalo in the 2018 campaign.

Sensabaugh was a fourth-round pick of the Titans in 2012 and has played for six teams across eight NFL seasons. He spent parts of last year with Washington and Denver. Sensabaugh has 45 starts in 107 games with 3 interceptions and 32 pass breakups.

There’s no word yet on any additions for the 49ers, and they’d need to clear COVID-19 protocols before joining the club. San Francisco could conceivably aim to solve their depth problem by elevating Tim Harris and/or Parnell Motley off the practice squad.

49ers roster moves: New safety added to active roster

The San Francisco 49ers promoted safety Kai Nacua to their active roster and opened the practice window for LB Mark Nzeocha.

In a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday, the 49ers promoted safety Kai Nacua to the active roster from the practice squad, signed safety Chris Edwards to replace him on the practice squad, and opened the practice window for linebacker Mark Nzeocha.

Nacua appeared in 16 games as a rookie with the Cleveland Browns in 2017, but has not played in a regular-season game since. It didn’t take long for the BYU product to make an impression in practice. He joined the club Nov. 24 and has already received a promotion.

Edwards was signed by the 49ers out of the Canadian Football League last offseason and he has oscillated between the practice squad, roster, and waivers since. He was most recently on the active roster as a healthy scratch vs. the Rams before getting released after the game.

Nzeocha is listed as a linebacker, but he primarily contributes on special teams. He appeared in three games this season and recorded no statistics before suffering a quadriceps injury in the 49ers’ 36-9 victory over the New York Giants. He went on Injured Reserve after that game, and now the 49ers have a 21-day window to either activate Nzeocha or put him on season-ending IR.

49ers CB K’Waun Williams suspended 2 games

49ers CB K’Waun Williams was hit with a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

49ers cornerback K’Waun Williams isn’t expected to return any time soon while he deals with a high ankle sprain. The NFL on Tuesday ensured he won’t be back for at least two weeks though when the league announced Williams is suspended for two games for violating its performance-enhancing substance policy.

Per the NFL’s 2020 policy on performance-enhancing substances, players who get their first positive test result for a stimulant, diuretic or masking agent receive a two-game suspension. That’s four games fewer than required six games for a positive result for an anabolic substance.

Williams was hurt in the 49ers’ Week 9 loss to the Packers. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated he could miss the rest of the season, and the only reason he wasn’t put on Injured Reserve is because he’d already used the short-term designation. He went on IR for three games earlier in the season with a knee injury. A second IR stint would’ve automatically been season-ending.

It was unlikely Williams was going to return for either of the next two games, although now he won’t even be able to practice until after the 49ers’ Week 13 contest vs. the Bills.

Williams this season has 14 tackles, 1.0 sacks and 2 pass breakups in six games.
