Trent Williams misses Day 1 of 49ers mandatory minicamp for good reason

Trent Williams was absent from Day 1 of 49ers mandatory minicamp, but he had a good reason.

49ers left tackle Trent Williams was one of two players not in attendance when the club convened Tuesday for mandatory minicamp. The other was wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is in search of a contract extension. Williams’ absence was not contract related according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

The veteran left tackle missed Day 1 of the three-day mandatory sessions because he was attending his daughter’s graduation. Shanahan told reporters he expects Williams to be in attendance Wednesday for the second day of the practices.

While these practices are mandatory, a player like Williams who is entering his 14th NFL season isn’t going to glean much from them. In fact, once he arrives he may not even participate.

Attending something special like a child’s graduation is going to be far more meaningful for Williams than getting to football practice, particularly a football practice in early June.

As long as Williams is healthy and ready to play by Week 1, the 49ers will be fine with whatever he does in the offseason.

49ers first on-field look at rookies coming soon

Hey the #49ers have some offseason stuff happening this week!

The 49ers won’t have to wait much longer to see their first-year players in on-field action. Draft picks and undrafted free agents will all report to the team facility on Thursday, May 9. Their first rookie minicamp will take place the following day.

In all there isn’t much to glean from rookie minicamp, but it provides different opportunities for different players.

Early draft picks will just be hoping to get through the sessions and prove to be competent at football. It’s likely the easiest thing they’ll do in an NFL uniform.

For the later draft picks and undrafted players it’s an opportunity to shine. Nobody is going to win a starting job or a roster spot. However, making an impression as a late-round pick, UDFA or minicamp invitee could set the table to show out in OTAs and beyond. Simply getting on the radar is a win for those players in the rookie minicamp.

Beyond that we won’t take too much away from the session. Those big takeaways can come from training camp and the preseason once the pads come on and real preparations are underway.

Watch: Deebo Samuel works out at 49ers mandatory minicamp

Some video of Deebo Samuel working out at #49ers minicamp made its way to the internet.

Deebo Samuel showed up to 49ers mandatory minicamp in what looks like a step in the right direction for him and San Francisco coming together on a long-term contract extension.

Samuel didn’t participate in team drills, and instead ran sprints on a side field decked out in 49ers gear.

It’s not a huge surprise the All-Pro wide receiver skipped the team portion of the day considering his contract status and the injury risk. Chances are he wouldn’t have participated even if there wasn’t a rift between him and the team that led to a trade request from Samuel’s camp before the draft.

While Samuel wasn’t on the field for team drills, reporters on site at practice noted Samuel was with the wide receivers and holding a play sheet while watching practice, so there was at least some level of engagement from the disgruntled WR.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t have an reporters after practice on Samuel’s contract negotiations or where he stands with the team. His presence at minicamp doesn’t mean the 49ers are out of the woods yet, but it’s certainly not a bad sign that he was in attendance.
