Injury issues remain on 49ers practice report to begin Week 15

No practice Monday for the 49ers, but here’s what their practice report would’ve looked like.

The San Francisco 49ers are looking for a miracle in order to make it to the postseason for a fourth consecutive season. That miracle doesn’t appear to be coming on the injury front.

Monday’s projected practice report didn’t offer any positive updates on some of the 49ers’ injured stars. The team didn’t practice, but they still have to submit a projected participation report leading up to Thursday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

Defensive end Nick Bosa and left tackle Trent Williams both remain out with hip/oblique and ankle injuries, respectively. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday in a conference call indicated neither player has made much progress over last week. Neither Bosa nor Williams practiced leading up to Week 14. Bosa was listed as doubtful on the injury report before sitting out a third consecutive game. Williams was ruled out on the injury report.

Here’s the full projected practice report:

Did not participate

G Ben Bartch (ankle)
DE Nick Bosa (hip, oblique)
RB Isaac Guerendo (foot)
LT Trent Williams (ankle)

Bartch was hurt in San Francisco’s Week 14 win. He started for Aaron Banks who cleared concussion protocol and is in line to return Thursday. Guerendo also went down in that game and it doesn’t appear he’s on track to suit up in a short week, but Shanahan remains hopeful.

Limited participation

LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (knee)
LB Dre Greenlaw (Achilles)
DE Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)
S Malik Mustapha (chest, shoulder)
LB Dee Winters (ankle)

That’s a lot of banged up LBs! Greenlaw has a chance to make his return Thursday depending on how his week of practice goes, per Shanahan. Mustapha, Gross-Matos and Winters all played well against Chicago, but limited sessions to start the week put a question mark over their availability for Thursday’s contest.

Full participation

G Aaron Banks (concussion)
S Talanoa Hufanga (wrist)
DE Sam Okuayinonu (wrist)

Good news all around here with Banks clearing concussion protocol and Hufanga getting through his return from a wrist injury without any setbacks.

49ers place breakout star RB on IR ahead of Week 14

Jordan Mason is officially on IR.

The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday officially placed running back Jordan Mason on IR as part of a slew of roster moves leading up to a Week 14 matchup against the Chicago Bears.

Mason suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 13 vs. the Buffalo Bills. He’ll be out at least four of the final five weeks now that he’s been placed on the injured list.

Safety George Odum was also sent to IR after sustaining a knee injury in practice leading up to the Bears game. He wasn’t on the report Wednesday, then was listed as a non-participant Thursday and Friday before getting ruled out on Friday’s injury report. The extent of his knee injury is unclear.

In a corresponding move the 49ers activated safety Talanoa Hufanga off IR. He suffered a wrist injury in Week 5 and figures to make his return Sunday against the Bears. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated Hufanga will play with a contraption to protect his injured wrist.

Offensive lineman Sebastian Gutierrez was also promoted to the active roster to fill the spot vacated by Mason. He spent the offseason with the 49ers and was recently re-signed to their practice squad. He’ll provide depth on a banged up offensive line.

Practice squad elevations for Week 14 include linebacker Jalen Graham and running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn. Both will revert to the practice squad after Sunday’s game.

Will Jordan Mason play this week? Injury updates for 49ers RB

49ers RB Jordan Mason is dealing with a high ankle sprain. Here are the latest updates.

The San Francisco 49ers suffered a pair of huge blows to their offensive backfield in their Week 13 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Running back Christian McCaffrey suffered a PCL injury in his knee that will likely end his season. He was placed on IR and will miss at least four weeks.

RB Jordan Mason also suffered an injury in that game. His high ankle sprain kept him out of practice all week, and the team listed him as ‘out’ on the Friday injury report.

Here’s the latest on him:

Jordan Mason injury update

Mason has a high ankle sprain and head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated the 2024 breakout star may be headed for IR. The team placed McCaffrey and defensive tackle Kevin Givens on IR this week when they announced roster moves, but didn’t place Mason there. They may have been waiting until Saturday to see how the week of practice went before promoting someone to the active roster spot Mason will vacate.

How long will Jordan Mason be out?

The nature of a high ankle sprain means Mason will likely be out at least a month. If he goes on IR he’ll be required to miss a minimum of four weeks. With only five games to go it looks like Mason’s season is over regardless of whether he goes on IR.

49ers RB depth chart

It’s the Isaac Guerendo show as long as Mason and McCaffrey are both on the sideline. Guerendo is backed up by Patrick Taylor who was recently promoted from the practice squad, and Israel Abanikanda who was recently acquired off waivers from the New York Jets. Taylor has played in eight games with the 49ers this year and he had an entire offseason to get familiar with their offense. He figures to be the RB2 for now, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Abanikanda sneaks ahead of him as he gets more integrated into the offense.

Kyle Shanahan has positive update on Brock Purdy shoulder injury

Brock Purdy’s shoulder is good to go.

It looked after Week 11 like another injury might take out one of the San Francisco 49ers key players.

Quarterback Brock Purdy suffered a right shoulder injury during the 49ers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks that looked like it may wind up hindering him as the team tried holding onto its increasingly slim postseason hopes.

Purdy missed Week 12 vs. the Green Bay Packers, but returned in Week 13 vs. the Buffalo Bills.

It was hard to judge just how healthy Purdy was in Buffalo because the weather conditions and game script made it difficult for the 49ers to execute their passing game.

After Purdy went through a full week of practice leading up to Week 14 vs. the Chicago Bears, head coach Kyle Shanahan is confident the signal caller is fully healthy.

“He is good,” Shanahan said. “We had to wait a while to give him rest to make sure it healed, and we could see that it did at the end of last week and that’s why there’s no issues last Sunday and it’s been great all week. So, glad to get him back to full-speed and get him a full week of practice.”

With running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason out, the 49ers desperately need Purdy to play at the level he played in 2023 when he was an MVP candidate.

Getting there without weapons like McCaffrey, Mason and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will be difficult, but doing it with a banged up throwing shoulder would’ve been nigh impossible.

49ers Week 14 injury report bad news for 2 of team’s most important players

The injuries persist.

The San Francisco 49ers can’t get out from under the injury woes that have played a key role in their disappointing 2024 campaign.

Their slim playoff hopes nearly require them to win in Week 14 against the Chicago Bears, but they’ll likely once again be without defensive end Nick Bosa and left tackle Trent Williams.

Bosa is listed as doubtful on the 49ers Week 14 injury report because of hip and oblique injuries. Williams has officially been ruled out because of an ankle issue.

That duo has missed the 49ers last two games, which San Francisco has lost by a combined score of 73-20.

With running back Christian McCaffrey, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave already on IR, the 49ers once star studded roster is looking much more ordinary heading into Sunday’s virtual must-win game vs. Chicago.

Here’s the full injury report:

Out

LB Dre Greenlaw (Achilles)
S George Odum (knee)
RB Jordan Mason (ankle)
LT Trent Williams (ankle)

It sounds like Mason is headed to IR with a high ankle sprain. Odum showed up as a non-participant on Thursday’s practice report and it’s not a great sign he was ruled out. Greenlaw could return for the 49ers on Thursday Night Football vs  the Los Angeles Rams in Week 15 per head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Doubtful

DE Nick Bosa (hip, oblique)

Questionable

LG Aaron Banks (concussion)
LB Demetrius Flanagan-Fowles (knee)
S Talanoa Hufanga (wrist)

Hufanga hasn’t been activated off IR. That will be a necessary roster move if the 49ers plan on playing him vs. Chicago.

Some good news for 49ers on 1st Week 14 practice report

49ers practice report for Wednesday is here:

The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday began their week of practice as they gear up for what amounts to a season-ending stretch of must-win games if they hope to sneak into the postseason.

Their first practice report of the week had a handful of good news with linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga both appearing as limited participants. Greenlaw is returning from a torn Achilles he suffered in the Super Bowl. He had his 21-day practice window opened last week in hopes he’ll be able to return from the PUP list in time to play in 2024.

Hufanga hurt his wrist in Week 5 and went on IR. He had his 21-day practice window opened and also appeared as a limited participant.

Both players are due to hit free agency in the offseason, so getting on the field to end the year may be a priority for them even if the 49ers don’t have anything to play for down the stretch.

Quarterback Brock Purdy was also a full participant after returning last week from a shoulder injury. He didn’t suffer any setbacks during the game and figures to be on track to suit up against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Here’s the full practice report:

Did not participate

LG Aaron Banks (concussion)
DE Nick Bosa (hip, oblique)
LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (knee)
RB Jordan Mason (ankle)
LT Trent Williams (ankle)

Mason figures to go on IR with a high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 13. Bosa and Williams have missed the last two weeks, and both will be evaluated throughout the week to determine whether they’ll be able to return in Week 14.

Limited participation

LB Dre Greenlaw (Achilles)
S Talanoa Hufanga (wrist)
CB Deommodore Lenoir (knee)

Lenoir missed Week 13 after hurting his knee the previous week. It looks like he’s trending toward a Week 14 return.

Full participation

DT Jordan Elliott (concussion)
DE Sam Okuayinonu (wrist)
RG Dominick Puni (shoulder)
QB Brock Purdy (shoulder)

Good signs all around here. Barring a setback this quartet will play against Chicago.

Christian McCaffrey injury fallout continues with more 49ers roster moves

More roster moves for the 49ers on Wednesday.

The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday continued adjusting to life without running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason.

They announced running back Patrick Taylor’s promotion to the active roster from the practice squad, along with the addition of RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn to the practice squad. Defensive tackle Kevin Givens has also been placed on IR.

Taylor’s promotion isn’t a surprise since San Francisco was so thin at running back. Rookie fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo figures to sit atop the depth chart, but until Tuesday the 49ers didn’t have any healthy players behind him. They claimed former New York Jets RB Israel Abanikanda off waivers to give Guerendo a backup. Taylor gives them a third player on the depth chart, while Vaughn re-joining the club adds internal depth.

This is Taylor’s second stint on the active roster this season. He was let go ahead of McCaffrey’s return in Week 10, but he re-signed to their practice squad after clearing waivers. Now he’ll return to the active roster with a chance to carve out an RB2 role behind Guerendo.

Vaughn was with the 49ers during the preseason and also spent time on their practice squad before being released in mid-November. He’s now back with the club.

Givens suffered a torn pec in the 49ers’ Week 13 loss to the Buffalo Bills. His injury-riddled season is over after only eight games. The 2019 undrafted free agent signee posted 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a career-high 3.5 sacks this season.

49ers sign Christian McCaffrey’s replacement, add WR to practice squad

The 49ers have a new running back.

The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday announced how they’d replace running back Christian McCaffrey.

In a slew of roster moves the 49ers placed McCaffrey on IR, claimed RB Israel Abanikanda off waivers from the New York Jets and signed wide receiver Ronnie Bell to the practice squad.

McCaffrey suffered a season-ending PCL injury in his knee during the 49ers’ Week 13 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated on Monday McCaffrey would go on IR with only five games to go and McCaffrey expected to miss at least six weeks.

While Abanikanda will replace him on the roster, the expectation is that rookie RB Isaac Guerendo will carry a lion’s share of the workload in the backfield. Abanikanda may work his way into the backup RB role depending on how the team feels about RB Patrick Taylor who is on the practice squad and spent the first nine weeks on the active roster before McCaffrey returned.

Abanikanda was a fifth-round pick of the Jets in the 2023 draft. He played in six games as a rookie and churned out 70 yards on 22 carries.

Bell was waived by the 49ers on Friday before Week 13. The 2023 seventh-round pick gives San Francisco a reliable internal option if they need depth at WR or on special teams.

We may see additional roster moves in the backfield with RB Jordan Mason also potentially hitting IR after suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 13.

How 49ers will replace Christian McCaffrey, Jordan Mason after injuries

Here’s what the 49ers backfield will look like following injuries to Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason.

The San Francisco 49ers’ dreadful season got worse in Week 13 when running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason both suffered injuries that will land the RBs on IR.

McCaffrey will miss at least six weeks with a PCL injury in his knee, while Mason will have to work his way back from a high ankle sprain. With only five games left in the season it wouldn’t be a surprise if both players missed the rest of the year.

That leaves a pretty substantial void in the 49ers’ backfield where Mason and McCaffrey had accounted for 203 of their 340 rushing attempts. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday in a conference call with reporters explained how the team plans to operate with McCaffrey and Mason both sidelined.

“Yeah, we have (rookie RB Isaac) Guerendo. Obviously, he’ll be up,” Shanahan said. “We’ve got (RB) Patrick (Taylor Jr.) here who is on our practice squad, who will definitely be bumped up now, who was on our roster earlier in the year before Christian came back. And we’ll most likely have to look for another.”

Guerendo is a fourth-round pick who has 246 yards and two touchdowns on 42 carries this season. Taylor signed with the 49ers in the offseason and spent time on the active roster before McCaffrey returned from Achilles tendinitis. He posted 25 rushing yards on seven carries before getting cut to make room for McCaffrey. The 49ers re-signed Taylor to the practice squad shortly after he was let go.

This is a prime opportunity for Guerendo to carve out a long-term role. With Mason due to hit free agency next offseason, the 49ers may be looking for a No. 2 RB to slot in behind McCaffrey and Guerendo will be their top option if he performs well as the lead back.

The likely option for San Francisco when they bring in another RB is Ke’Shawn Vaughn, who was on the 49ers practice squad after spending the preseason with the team. Veteran Matt Breida was also with the club in the preseason, but he never re-signed to the practice squad. Vaughn’s familiarity with the team and the offense make him a logical choice unless the 49ers like another free agent as a potential long-term option and want to give him some looks in practice.

Christian McCaffrey feared to have suffered season-ending knee injury

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is feared to have suffered a season-ending PCL injury vs. the Buffalo Bills.

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey missed the first eight games of the 2024 season with bilateral Achilles tendinitis.

Now, it looks like McCaffrey’s 2024 campaign could be over altogether.

McCaffrey departed the 49ers’ eventual 35-10 loss at the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night early in the second quarter. The 5-foot-11, 210 pound running back took a pitch from quarterback Brock Purdy but came up lame on the snap.

McCaffrey slid down to the Highmark Stadium playing surface with a non-contact injury.

The 49ers initially listed McCaffrey as questionable before downgrading the star running back to out with a knee injury.

Afterwards, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that McCaffrey is feared to have suffered a potentially season-ending PCL injury.

“Yeah, it was frustrating. You know, he had a great week of practice and I could feel his urgency and stuff. I thought he came out great, looking real good and it looked like he just got his shoestring there. He was about to break a house call. I’m guessing he got hurt on that play. I don’t know. I never got to talk to him, but hurt for him and tough for our team not having him,” Shanahan said.

McCaffrey exited Sunday night’s loss with 53 rushing yards on seven carries and a pair of receptions for 14 yards.

On the season, McCaffrey has rushed 50 times for 202 rushing yards and caught 15 passes for 146 yards in four games.

This comes on the heels of McCaffrey’s NFL Offensive Player of the Year season with the 49ers a season ago. In his first full season in San Francisco during 2023, McCaffrey racked up 1,459 rushing yards, 564 receiving yards and 21 total touchdowns.
