Report: K’Waun Williams has high ankle sprain

The 49ers injuries are getting worse and they may not have K’Waun Williams vs. the New Orleans Saints.

The 49ers might be without nickel cornerback K’Waun Williams in Week 10 vs. the New Orleans Saints. Matt Barrows of the Athletic on Thursday reported Williams suffered a high ankle sprain in the 49ers’ 34-17 loss to the Packers.

Williams exited the game early and was seen by reporters at the game on the sideline in a helmet. There was initially no report on an injury for the cornerback. He was listed as questionable coming out of halftime with an ankle injury and never returned to the lineup.

This would be the second time Williams has missed time with an injury. He suffered a knee sprain in Week 4 that landed him on Injured Reserve. Jamar Taylor took his place Thursday and figures to fill in if Williams misses any games.

Strong safety Jaquiski Tartt also missed the second half Thursday. He was ruled out with a foot injury, but there was no update from head coach Kyle Shanahan after the game.

49ers inactives: Richie James Jr, Jaquiski Tartt will play vs. Packers

The 49ers will have much-needed help at wide receiver with Richie James Jr. returning after an ankle injury vs. the Packers.

The 49ers’ two players listed as ‘questionable’ on the Week 9 status report will both suit up Thursday night vs. the Packers. In a rare bit of good injury news for the club, strong safety Jaquiski Tartt and wide receiver Richie James Jr. were both left off the team’s list of inactives.

Tartt has been dealing with a groin injury and missed the last two games. James missed Week 8 in Seattle with an ankle injury.

James’ return couldn’t have come at a better time with three receivers, Kendrick Bourne, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk all on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. He was one of two available wide receivers on the active roster prior to the team’s pre-game roster moves that saw two additional receivers added from the practice squad.

Here’s the full, albeit small, list of inactives for San Francisco:

CB Ahkello Witherspoon
RB Tevin Coleman (knee)
LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (hamstring)

For the Packers, running back Aaron Jones is healthy and will play. Here are their inactives:

10 QB Jordan Love
20 CB Kevin King
25 S Will Redmond
36 S Vernon Scott
69 T David Bakhtiari
93 DL Billy Winn

Jimmy Garoppolo heads to locker room in 49ers game vs. Seahawks

The 49ers pulled quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who’s still dealing with an ankle injury.

Jimmy Garoppolo left the 49ers’ game vs. the Seahawks during the fourth quarter.

He was shown on TV limping on the sideline and talking to the training staff. While he’s played the last four weeks, he’s still recovering from a high ankle sprain.

The ankle appeared to be bothering him on some throws, but he still managed to run it a handful of times.

With the team trailing 30-7, this could be similar to the Miami Dolphins game where the 49ers pulled Garoppolo at halftime with the score lopsided.

He was officially listed as ‘questionable’ to return.

49ers inactives: Jimmie Ward will play vs. Seahawks

The 49ers got one of their starting safeties back for their showdown with the Seattle Seahawks.

The 49ers will get one of their starting safeties back for their Week 8 showdown against the Seattle Seahawks. Free safety Jimmie Ward was listed as ‘questionable’ on the status report, but he was not among the team’s inactives.

Ward hurt his quad the Thursday prior to last week’s game in New England. That sidelined him for that contest and limited him in practice this week. He’ll be good to go though while Jaquiski Tartt remains out with a groin injury.

With Ward starting at free safety, it’ll likely be Marcell Harris joining him in the back end of the secondary with Tarvarius Moore and Johnathan Cyprien serving as backups.

Here’s who won’t be suiting up Sunday for the 49ers:

QB CJ Beathard
CB Ken Webster
LB Kwon Alexander (ankle)
SS Jaquiski Tartt (groin)
WR Deebo Samuel (hamstring)
WR Richie James Jr. (ankle)

A notable name not on this list is wide receiver Dante Pettis who’ll be active for the first time since Week 4.

The Seahawks enter Sunday banged up as well. They’ll be without their top two running backs, Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde, strong safety Jamal Adams.

Here are Seattle’s inactives:

SS Jamal Adams
RB Carlos Hyde
RB Chris Carson
CB Shaquill Griffin
G Mike Iupati
S Ugo Amadi
DE Benson Mayowa

Richie James Jr., Jaquiski Tartt officially ruled out vs. Seahawks

The 49ers won’t have Richie James Jr. or Jaquiski Tartt vs. the Seahawks, and they may be without Kentavius Street.

The 49ers on Saturday downgraded a few players from their original designation on Friday’s status report.

Defensive lineman Kentavius Street was originally listed as ‘questionable’ with a non-COVID-19 illness. He was downgraded to ‘doubtful’ while he continues going through the COVID-19 protocols that players have to pass when they’re sick. The Athletic’s Matt Barrows wrote on Twitter that Street has to pass one more COVID-19 test before he can travel to Seattle.

Strong safety Jaquiski Tartt and wide receiver Richie James  on Friday were both ‘doubtful,’ and downgraded to ‘out’ for Sunday. It’s not a surprise that San Francisco officially chose to sideline both players. Tartt has a groin injury that kept him out of last week’s game. James hurt his ankle against the Patriots, and neither player practiced during the week.

To help combat the loss of Tartt and James, the 49ers flexed safety Johnathan Cyprien and River Cracraft from the practice squad. If Street can’t play, the 49ers will only have seven defensive linemen since they didn’t elevate one from the practice squad.

49ers injury report: Jimmie Ward could return vs. Seahawks

Jimmie Ward is questionable on the 49ers’ Week 8 injury report.

The 49ers’ injury situation continues to be a significant obstacle in their quest to return to the postseason.

Sunday in Seattle could see the return of a couple key players, but a slew of other starters and key contributors remain either out entirely or doubtful heading into Week 8.

Here’s the official status report for Sunday’s game:

49ers injury report: Kwon Alexander, Jimmie Ward return to practice

The San Francisco 49ers got a couple key defenders back Thursday leading up to their game vs. the Seattle Seahawks.

The 49ers on Thursday got a couple of key defensive players back in practice. Linebacker Kwon Alexander and Richie James, both nursing ankle injuries, were limited participants after sitting out Wednesday’s session.

Alexander suffered a high ankle sprain in the 49ers’ loss to Miami and hasn’t suited up since. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated he could be bound for Injured Reserve, but he never went on the injured list. His limited participation doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll play Sunday in Seattle, but the team could be setting him on track to face the Packers on Thursday night in Week 9.

James was banged up in the Week 7 win over the Patriots. There was never a report on the severity of his ankle injury, but the fact he only missed one day of practice is a good sign. James isn’t very involved in the offense, but he handles all the kick return duties so having him back would be good for San Francisco’s special teams unit.

Here’s the full practice participation report for Thursday. Jason Verrett was back in action as well after a veteran day off to start the week.

WR Richie James (ankle)
WR Deebo Samuel (hamstring)
SS Jaquiski Tartt (groin)
RB Jeffery Wilson (ankle)

Kyle Shanahan hopeful 2 players come off Injured Reserve for Week 8

The 49ers could have Tevin Coleman and K’Waun Williams coming off Injured Reserve for Week 8 vs. the Seahawks.

While the 49ers are reeling for more setbacks on the injury front, head coach Kyle Shanahan is hopeful to get two players back from Injured Reserve.

Running back Tevin Coleman and cornerback K’Waun Williams could both be back in action this week in Seattle after missing multiple games with knee injuries. Coleman sprained his knee in the 49ers’ Week 2 win over the Jets. Williams was hurt in a Week 4 loss to the Eagles.

Shanahan told reporters that while he’s hopeful to get Coleman back, the team won’t know for sure until later in the week.

Williams, on the other hand, was spotted working out on a side field during practices last week. That was a good indication his return might be on the horizon. This would be the first week he’s eligible to open his practice window after spending three weeks on IR.

Getting Coleman back would be significant for the 49ers since Jeff Wilson Jr. is due to go on IR, leaving JaMycal Hasty and Jerick McKinnon as the only healthy running backs on the 53-man roster.

San Francisco has weathered the injury storm fairly well to this point, and the sooner they can get any players back from Injured Reserve the better their chances will be of ultimately overcoming them to make the postseason.

49ers will be without both starting safeties vs. Patriots

San Francisco 49ers will be without Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward vs. the New England Patriots.

The 49ers secondary on Friday suffered a pair of major blows when both starters, Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward were ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Patriots. Their absence means four of San Francisco’s Week 1 starters in the back end wont be available vs. New England.

Tartt injured his groin during the 49ers’ Week 6 win over the Rams. He was a non-participant in practice all week.

Ward is more of a mystery. He showed up on Friday’s practice report as a non-participant with a quad injury after practicing in full the first two days. The quad injury was bad enough for the team to rule him out for Sunday. It’s the first time Ward has missed a game due to injury since he returned from a preseason broken collarbone in Week 5 last year.

Tartt and Ward join cornerback Richard Sherman and nickel corner K’Waun Williams among starters in the secondary who won’t be available Sunday.

Here’s the full Week 7 injury report:

SS Jaquiski Tartt (groin)

FS Jimmie Ward (quad)

RB Raheem Mostert (knee)

LB Kwon Alexander (ankle)

49ers injury report: Trent Williams returns to practice

The 49ers got good news on the injury front with left tackle Trent Williams, but there’s no guarantee he’ll play vs. the Patriots.

The 49ers on Thursday had left tackle Trent Williams back in practice after he missed Wednesday’s session with an ankle injury.

San Francisco is already dealing with a slew injuries on defense and may not have running back Raheem Mostert nor center Ben Garland for the foreseeable future. Losing Williams, who’s been playing well this season, would’ve been a particularly significant blow to the offensive line that finally got its bearings against the Rams.

There’s no guarantee Williams plays Sunday against the Patriots, but a limited Thursday session is progress toward his availability on game day. Either way, we may not know until Sunday when Williams has a chance to test his ankle.

Here’s the full practice report for Thursday:
