George Kittle says he’s playing Sunday vs. Eagles

The 49ers will have tight end George Kittle available vs. the Philadelphia Eagles per Kittle.

The 49ers were without tight end George Kittle for two games while he dealt with a knee sprain. Those are the only games they’ll be without him according to Kittle. The All-Pro on Thursday spoke with reporters in a video conference and said he plans on playing Sunday night vs. the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kittle sprained his knee late in the first half of the 49ers’ season opener vs. the Arizona Cardinals when he was hit low by Cardinals safety Budda Baker. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said leading up to Week 2 that Kittle would stay behind in the Bay Area to receive treatment, then rejoin the team with a chance to play in Week 3.

Kittle told reporters though he could’ve played the week after the injury if it was later in the season.

It’s not a surprise to see the 49ers’ training staff work conservatively with a player’s injury, especially early in the year. Kittle last season missed two games with a popped capsule in his knee and a chipped bone in his ankle.

Shanahan’s early declaration that Kittle would be a possibility to play in Week 3, followed by Kittle’s three limited practices prior to the Giants game was a good sign that the 49ers would have their top pass catcher back by the time they faced the Eagles. A pair of full practices to open the week put the writing on the wall that he’d return, and now he’s confirmed it.

49ers injury report: Jimmy Garoppolo misses another practice

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo was out of practice again Thursday while he deals with a high ankle sprain.

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on Thursday missed another day of practice according to the team’s practice report.

Garoppolo hasn’t practiced since suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 2 vs. the Jets. Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed some semblance of optimism that Garoppolo may miss only one game, but it appears he’ll miss at least two with no practice time either Wednesday or Thursday.

The only change to the practice report from Wednesday was cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon being downgraded from a full participant to a limited participant. Witherspoon is dealing with a hamstring injury that kept him out of last week’s contest vs. the Giants.

Here’s Thursday’s practice report:

Did not participate

DE Dee Ford (back)
QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle)
LB Dre Greenlaw (quadricep)
CB Emmanuel Moseley (concussion)
RB Raheem Mostert (knee)
TE Jordan Reed (knee)

Limited participation

CB K’Waun Williams (hip)
CB Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring)

Full participation

TE George Kittle (knee)
RB Jerick McKinnon (ribs)

Jordan Reed knee injury shouldn’t derail his entire season

Jordan Reed suffered a knee injury in the 49ers’ win over the Giants, but it shouldn’t impact him late in the year.

Tight end Jordan Reed was off to a good start with the 49ers before a knee injury in Week 3 continued a troubling trend in his injury-plagued career. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan is optimistic the MCL sprain Reed sustained against the Giants isn’t something that’ll keep him from being a factor when he returns in six-to-eight weeks.

“I know he’s disappointed, but not discouraged,” Shanahan on Monday told reporters in a video conference. “I think he was really liking where he was at. It’s something that’s going to take some time, just what they say, probably six to eight weeks, which does take time. So, I know he’s disappointed in that, but nothing that’s going to affect him after that. He’ll hit his rehab hard and hopefully we can weather the storm while he’s gone and he’ll come back to a good team.”

Reed was tied for the 49ers’ team lead in targets with 16, and led the club in receptions with 11 and touchdown catches with two. He left Sunday’s game with two catches for 23 yards.

It’d be a significant accomplishment for Reed to return and finish out the year healthy. A six-week recovery time puts him back in the lineup for Week 9 against the Packers. Eight weeks makes him healthy for the bye week and back in action vs. the Rams in Week 12.

Injuries have been an unfortunate commonality for the former third-round pick. He’s never played in 16 games, and he’s reached the 14-game mark only once. It sounds like this season he may not get to double-digit games for the fourth time in his career.

While the injury isn’t good, the fact he can return is a huge plus. The 49ers never meant to lean on Reed the way they did in Weeks 2 and 3, and he should come back to a healthier version of the team that has a slew of other weapons around him.

Reed may not get to play a full season, but he has a chance to come back and have a major impact for a 49ers team that still has visions of winning a Super Bowl.

49ers rule out TE Jordan Reed, CB Emmanuel Moseley

The 49ers lost two more players to injury in Week 3 vs. the Giants.

The 49ers have ruled out two more players for Sunday’s game. Tight end Jordan Reed won’t return with knee and ankle injuries according to Pam Oliver on the Fox TV broadcast. Emmanuel Moseley, who was originally questionable to return, has now been ruled out with a concussion.

Reed went down in the first quarter after turning his ankle while trying to make a catch in the back of the end zone. He left briefly but returned in the second quarter. He caught a short pass, got tackled, then limped off the field. Reed appeared to be signaling to trainers that his knee was hurt.

That’s a huge loss for a 49ers offense that’s already been blasted by injuries. It’s also a tough blow for Reed who’s career has been marred by various injury problems.

He exited Sunday’s game with two catches for 23 yards. The 49ers are down to Ross Dwelley and rookie sixth-round pick Charlie Woerner at tight end.

Moseley got whacked by safety Jaquiski Tartt on a run by Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. He exited the game after the hit and didn’t return. Dontae Johnson took over for him.

49ers injury report: 6 players officially out vs. Giants, Ahkello Witherspoon questionable

The 49ers made it official and ruled out George Kittle and Jimmy Garoppolo vs. the Giants. Ahkello Witherspoon is questionable.

The 49ers confirmed the expectations of their injury concerns going into Week 3 vs. the New York Giants. They officially ruled out six players with their Friday injury report, and listed cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon as questionable with a hamstring injury.

George Kittle and Dre Greenlaw were both ruled out by head coach Kyle Shanahan just before the injury report was released. There were no other surprises in the list of players not available Sunday.

Witherspoon popped up on the report with a ‘questionable’ tag. He was a full participant Wednesday and Thursday, but was limited Friday with hamstring tightness according to Shanahan.

Here’s the full injury report:

Out

QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle)
TE George Kittle (knee)
RB Raheem Mostert (knee)
RB Tevin Coleman (knee)
DE Dee Ford (back)
LB Dre Greenlaw (quadricep)

Questionable

CB Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring)

Kyle Shanahan rules out Jimmy Garoppolo vs. Giants

The 49ers won’t have QB Jimmy Garoppolo for Week 3 vs. the Giants while he nurses a high ankle sprain.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday told KNBR in San Francisco that Nick Mullens will start SundayNick Mullens will start Sunday vs. the New York Giants. The 49ers will be without starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for the first time since the final game of the 2018 season. He’s been ruled out of Sunday’s contest with a high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 2 vs. the Jets.

Garoppolo sustained his injury early in the first quarter of the 49ers’ 31-13 romp over New York. He finished the first half, but never came out for the final 30 minutes. His one half of action against the Jets was strong. He completed 14-of-16 throws for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

Shanahan on Monday after the Jets game indicated Garoppolo’s sprain wasn’t severe, and left the door open for him starting against the Giants. The starting quarterback’s absence from the first two days of practice and Shanahan’s declaration Wednesday that Mullens would likely start put the writing on the wall for Garoppolo’s Week 3 status.

This will be the 14th game Garoppolo has missed since becoming the full time starter to start the 2018 campaign. That year he tore his ACL in Week 3 against the Chiefs and missed the final 13 games. He started all 16 last year plus three playoff games.

Mullens started eight games for San Francisco in that 2018 season, going 3-5 in those contests with a 64.2 percent completion rate, 13 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a 90.8 passer rating. He played the final two quarters against the Jets after Garoppolo went down and completed 8-of-11 throws for 71 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

The 49ers and Giants kick off Sunday at 10:00am Pacific Time from MetLife Stadium.

49ers confirm torn ACL for DL Solomon Thomas

The 49ers announced DL Solomon Thomas has a torn ACL.

The 49ers on Monday confirmed defensive lineman Solomon Thomas tore his ACL in their win over the Jets.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan after the game said the team was thinking he might’ve suffered an ACL tear, but was holding out hope his knee injury wasn’t severe. That hope was dashed with an MRI.

Thomas went down one play after defensive end Nick Bosa was carted off with an ACL injury. It wasn’t as clear how Thomas hurt his knee, but he went down immediately clutching his knee.

The 49ers selected Thomas No. 3 overall in the 2017 draft. This year was the final year of his rookie deal, and the hope was that a move to play on the interior more frequently would help Thomas put together a breakout season. Now he won’t get that chance with his season-ending knee injury.

Thomas in three seasons prior to 2020 had six sacks in 46 games. He’s set to be a free agent after this year.

49ers confirm torn ACL for DE Nick Bosa

The 49ers officially confirmed Nick Bosa tore his ACL in their win over the New York Jets.

The 49ers on Monday confirmed their fears with defensive end Nick Bosa’s knee injury. An MRI showed a torn ACL for the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 draft, ending his sophomore campaign.

Bosa went down in the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 2 win over the New York Jets. A Jets tight end got a good block on Bosa, and the defensive end’s knee got twisted underneath him. He was carted off and quickly ruled out for the game.

This is the second time Bosa has torn an ACL, although the first time was in his opposite leg. His last ACL injury came in his senior year of high school before attending Ohio State.

He missed most of training camp last year with a high ankle sprain, but went on to play all 16 games plus a trio of playoff games. Bosa racked up 80 pressures and 9.0 sacks on his way to becoming the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

This season Bosa was off to a strong start. He tallied five pressures in Week 1, but none in Week 2 after playing only 11 snaps.

A timeline for his return has not been announced.

49ers officially rule Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas out vs. Jets

The 49ers won’t have DE Nick Bosa or DL Solomon Thomas for the rest of their game vs. the Jets.

The 49ers made the expected updates on Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas official before the end of the first quarter. Both the defensive linemen are out for at least the rest of Sunday’s game after they were carted off on consecutive plays.

Bosa got his knee twisted up on a block. Thomas it was less clear what happened, but he appeared to get tangled up in a couple bodies.

There’s no ruling on what their injuries are, and we probably won’t get an official announcement on the severity of their ailments until Monday.

Nick Bosa carted off field vs. Jets

The 49ers lost defensive end Nick Bosa early vs. the New York Jets. He was carted off with an apparent knee injury.

The 49ers may have suffered another major injury early in their Week 2 matchup with the New York Jets.

Defensive end Nick Bosa went down with 6:45 left in the first quarter with an apparent left knee injury. He was unable to get off the field and they had to bring the cart out for the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year.

We’ll provide an update when the team gives one.
