49ers fear torn ACL for CB Jason Verrett

Kyle Shanahan said the 349ers are expecting the worst with Jason Verrett’s knee injury.

It didn’t look good when 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett went down in the fourth quarter of San Francisco’s season opener in Detroit. Now head coach Kyle Shanahan said they fear it’s a torn ACL for the veteran corner.

Verrett went down with no contact and immediately grabbed at his right knee. He walked off the field and toward the locker room under his own power, but he was visibly upset walking off the field and needed a cart to get up the tunnel per NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco. Verrett was quickly ruled out for the game.

Shanahan after the game told reporters he’s fearing the worst.

“It’s crushing,” Shanahan said. “I’m hoping for the best, but it’s crushing.”

Verrett played in 13 games last year and a career-high in snaps after dealing with injuries throughout his career. Between 2016 and 2018 he played in just five games. Then he signed with the 49ers in 2019 and got hurt in his first appearance. Last year he started 13 contests and was a Pro Bowl-caliber player for San Francisco.

He was their top corner going into Sunday, and now his season could be over. The club is still awaiting official word on the injury.

49ers CB Jason Verrett leaves game with apparent knee injury

#49ers CB Jason Verrett needed help getting off the field after suffering a leg injury vs. the Lions.

Midway through the fourth quarter, 49ers quarterback Jason Verrett went down with a non-contact injury and immediately reached for his right knee.

He walked off the field under his own power after trainers attended to him. Eventually Verrett went to the bench and then walked toward the locker room in tears. He stopped multiple times and needed assistance walking off.

That’s a potentially brutal injury for Verrett and the 49ers. Dontae Johnson was the first corner off the bench.

49ers injury update: Dre Greenlaw questionable, Raheem Mostert out

LB Dre Greenlaw (groin) is questionable to return for the #49ers. RB Raheem Mostert (knee) is out.

The 49ers got more bad injury news to start the second half of their season opener in Detroit. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw is dealing with a groin injury and is questionable to return, and running back Raheem Mostert has been downgraded from questionable to out.

Greenlaw had a Pick Six late in the first half for the 49ers and went to the locker room early with a trainer. Demetrius Flanningan-Fowles and Marcell Harris are the two reserves at linebacker. Flannigan-Fowles is in for Greenlaw with Azeez Al-Shaair moving to the Will linebacker spot.

Mostert left the game early in the first quarter with a knee injury after only two carries for 20 yards. He’s been replaced by rookie Elijah Mitchell who’s racked up 76 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.

49ers injury update: Raheem Mostert questionable to return vs. Lions

#49ers RB Raheem Mostert is questionable to return vs. the Lions.

After only two carries, 49ers running back Raheem Mostert is already dealing with a knee injury. He had 20 yards in his two touches and looked explosive. There was no real indication of when he might’ve gotten hurt, but now he’s questionable to return to the contest.

The 49ers only have two other active running backs.  They are second-year undrafted free agent JaMycal Hasty, and rookie sixth-round pick Elijah Mitchell.

49ers inactives: Rookie RB Trey Sermon OUT vs. Lions

49ers rookie RB Trey Sermon won’t play vs. the Lions.

There was a surprise on the 49ers’ list of inactives for the season opener in Detroit. Rookie running back Trey Sermon will not suit up for San Francisco after getting a full week of practice in and not showing up on the team’s Friday injury report. Sermon missed part of the preseason with an ankle issue but there was no indication during the week it was still a problem, and there’s no word on why he’s not suiting up against the Lions.

The running backs Sunday will be Raheem Mostert, Elijah Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty.

San Francisco will also go into Week 1 without a pair of defensive starters. Defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley are both on the 49ers’ inactive list for the opener after getting labeled as ‘doubtful’ in Friday’s injury report.

Kinlaw is dealing with a knee injury that hampered him during training camp. Moseley is also working through a knee issue. Both players were on the field getting workouts in before the game.

Here’s the full list of players not suiting up for San Francisco:

CB Emmanuel Moseley
DL Javon Kinlaw
CB Josh Norman
RB Trey Sermon
OL Aaron Banks

Norman only joined the team Monday and is still working into playing shape, and Banks, a rookie second-round pick missed most of the preseason with a shoulder issue.

49ers place WR Jalen Hurd on Injured Reserve, elevate CB Dontae Johnson

The #49ers placed WR Jalen Hurd on IR and added CB Dontae Johnson to the active roster.

The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday placed wide receiver Jalen Hurd on Injured Reserve. In a corresponding move they added cornerback Dontae Johnson from the practice squad.

It’s not a surprise to see Hurd go on IR after head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated earlier in the week that the receiver was still dealing with knee pain after playing in 27 snaps in the preseason finale. Hurd tore his ACL early in training camp last year and spent all of this year’s camp trying to get healthy. He participated sporadically in practices and didn’t get in a game until the last week of the preseason.

An IR stint is a minimum of three weeks. Shanahan gave no indication of a timetable for the 2019 third-round pick.

With Hurd out, the receiving corps runs five deep with Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Trent Sherfield, Mohamed Sanu and Jauan Jennings.

Johnson returns to the active roster after from the practice squad. He was initially let go at final roster cuts, re-signed to the 53-man, cut again, re-signed to the practice squad, and now he finds himself on the active roster going into Week 1 with a chance to play.

Starting CB Emmanuel Moseley is listed as ‘doubtful’ with a knee injury, and Johnson is the most experienced player on the roster in San Francisco’s defense. He’ll join a CB group featuring rookies Deommodore Lenoir and Ambry Thomas, along with Josh Norman who joined the team Monday.

49ers Week 1 injury report: WR Jalen Hurd out, 2 starters doubtful

Trey Lance wasn’t on the #49ers Week 1 injury report which indicates he’ll be good to go for the season opener. It wasn’t all good news though.

Perhaps the best news for the 49ers on their Week 1 injury report is who isn’t on the list. Rookie quarterback Trey Lance after a week of limited practice wasn’t included on the report, but a couple defensive starters are trending toward not playing as of Friday afternoon.

Here’s who’s in, out and questionable for San Francisco for Week 1 in Detroit:

49ers practice report: Emmanuel Moseley remains out with knee injury

A knee injury kept #49ers CB Emmanuel Moseley out for a second consecutive practice.

The 49ers’ practice report brought a little good news to help offset the bad news.

The bad news is cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is still not participating. However, a couple defensive starters who missed Wednesday’s practice were back in limited action Thursday.

Here’s the practice report:

Trey Lance gets back to throwing footballs after finger injury

Trey Lance on Wednesday was back to throwing footballs, but his status is still uncertain for the #49ers opener vs. the Lions.

Trey Lance on Wednesday participated in 49ers practice on a limited basis as he works his way back from a chip fracture in his right index finger. While the nature of a “limited” practice can vary, the good news for the 49ers and their rookie signal caller is that he was back to using footballs during the session.

In three practices since his injury in the final preseason game, including one session Monday, Lance had only practiced on air. He wasn’t taking snaps and he wasn’t throwing. The wrap that covered his finger came off Monday, but Wednesday was his first time working with footballs as he begins preparations for his first NFL game Sunday in Detroit.

Reporters on the ground at the 49ers’ facility had video of the rookie making throws:

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Eric Branch also provided this rousing update:

There’s no guarantee on whether this points the arrow firmly toward Lance playing Sunday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team is still in wait-and-see mode.

“I’m not sure yet,” Shanahan said when asked if Lance will be ready for the opener. “We’ll see how practice goes today. We haven’t been able to do anything live yet. He can do it on air, but that’ll be decided off of Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.”

If Lance continues getting work in throughout the week with no setbacks, it seems like he’ll be in line to play. The 49ers protected QB Nate Sudfeld from being signed off their practice squad in case Lance isn’t ready to suit up. Chances are we’ll get a better indication Friday when the official injury report for Sunday comes out.

WR Jalen Hurd could be headed back to Injured Reserve

Another IR stint could be in the cards for #49ers WR Jalen Hurd who continues working his way back from a torn ACL last season.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday said wide receiver Jalen Hurd is a candidate to land on Injured Reserve as he continues working his way back from a torn ACL last season.

Hurd was absent from Wednesday’s practice, and Shanahan said the receiver is still experiencing some pain in his knee after playing 27 offensive snaps and two special teams snaps in the preseason finale against the Raiders.

“Yeah, we felt pretty good going out of the Raiders game with just how long he was able to play and get through it,” Shanahan said. “But, it was hurting him three days later when we tried to practice again and gave him the weekend off and it was hurting again Monday and just coming in here today just realizing that we’ve got to re-evaluate this and shut him down for a little bit.”

Sporadic participation defined Hurd’s training camp this year after missing virtually all of camp last year when he tore his ACL early on. The 49ers gave him days off to ensure he’d be ready for Week 1, and he did enough in the last preseason game to land a spot on the 53-man roster.

An IR stint makes a lot of sense for the 2019 third-round pick. It’s a minimum of three weeks off that’ll allow him to recover and try to get in playing shape. Going on IR would vacate a roster spot the 49ers could conceivably use on practice squad WR Travis Benjamin, who could also solve their punt returner problem.

There’s been no official move yet, and the team may wait until after Week 1 to see how his knee is responding before making any changes to the roster, but for now it appears to make the most sense to shut him down for a few weeks to ensure he can get right and contribute at some point later in the season.
