Jimmy Garoppolo may not miss any time with calf injury

Jimmy Garoppolo may not miss any starts for the #49ers after an MRI revealed a calf contusion.

Jimmy Garoppolo left the 49ers’ Week 4 loss to the Seahawks at halftime because of a calf injury. Rookie Trey Lance played the entire second half, and after the game Garoppolo’s somber postgame press conference where he hoped the calf injury would only keep him out “a couple of weeks or something” made it sound as though Lance may be the starter for awhile. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday offered good news on Garoppolo’s injury though and didn’t rule out the veteran quarterback’s return in Week 5 at Arizona.

Garoppolo had an MRI that revealed a calf contusion which will be re-evaluated Wednesday. The diagnosis was a more optimistic one than the 49ers were anticipating and may not sideline Garoppolo for any time.

“No, it does mean he has a chance,” Shanahan said of Garoppolo’s status for Week 5. “It wasn’t as bad as we thought it might’ve been. Seeing him today, he’s in a lot of pain. He’s still sore. Hopefully by the time he comes in Wednesday, if it’s getting better, then he’ll have a good chance. Looking at it as a bruise. If it hasn’t improved at all by Wednesday, it’ll probably be a little bit longer.”

Garoppolo after Sunday’s game said he sustained the injury in the first quarter and tried to play through it, but as the game wore on the injury got worse and by halftime he was unable to re-enter.

In the first quarter Garoppolo completed 10 of his 12 throws for 132 yards, one touchdown and one interception. In the second quarter he went 4-for-11 for 33 yards.

The 49ers begin on-field preparations for the Cardinals on Wednesday, at which point we should get a better idea of Garoppolo’s status for Sunday.

Jimmy Garoppolo tried playing through calf injury, hopes to only miss a couple weeks

Trey Lance could start for the 49ers vs. the Cardinals if Jimmy Garoppolo’s calf injury isn’t healthy.

The 49ers at the start of the second half announced quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was questionable to return with a calf injury. He wound up spending the duration of Sunday’s loss to the Seahawks in a hat on the sideline. Now all eyes turn toward Week 5’s matchup with the undefeated Arizona Cardinals where Garoppolo doesn’t sound certain he’ll be available.

The injury came as a little bit of a surprise because there was no indication Garoppolo was hurt. He told reporters after the game that he suffered the injury on the 49ers’ first drive of the game.

“It happened in the first series,” Garoppolo said. “I don’t know exactly what happened. I tweaked the calf. It hurt initially. I thought I could keep trying to go in, it just kept getting worse and worse traveling down the Achilles a little bit.”

Garoppolo said he didn’t think it was an Achilles issue, but he did indicate he may not be ready for next Sunday’s matchup with the Cardinals.

“It feels like just the calf right now,” Garoppolo said. “I’m hopeful it’ll just be a couple weeks or something.”

If Garoppolo is unable to go, rookie Trey Lance would go into Arizona as a starter in a game that is effectively a must-win if the 49ers want to contend for the NFC West crown. Lance went 9-for-18 for 157 yards and two touchdowns in Garoppolo’s stead vs. Seattle.

Garoppolo told reporters he’ll have an MRI to get a better look at the injury in his right calf. The 49ers open their Week 5 practices Wednesday at which point we should have a better idea of his availability moving forward.

49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo questionable to return vs. Seahawks with calf injury

Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) is questionable to return for the #49ers vs. the Seahawks. It’s Trey Lance at QB.

Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t start the second half for the 49ers. Instead it was rookie Trey Lance in at quarterback. San Francisco announced Garoppolo was ‘questionable’ to return with a calf injury.

There was immediate speculation that Lance might’ve started the half because of the way Garoppolo finished the first half (4-11 for 33 yards in the second quarter). However, it appears it’s an injury for the oft-injured signal caller.

This is precisely why the 49ers wanted to upgrade their backup quarterback spot. What’ll be interesting to see is how this affects the team’s long-term plans. It looked like they were content starting Garoppolo all year, but if Lance plays well, it might be hard to bench him.

49ers inactives: Elijah Mitchell out, George Kittle in vs. Seahawks

The #49ers will have TE George Kittle vs. the Seahawks. RB Elijah Mitchell is OUT.

The 49ers on Sunday announced their list of inactive players for their matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. News from the announcement was good and bad for San Francisco. Running back Elijah Mitchell was officially ruled out. Tight end George Kittle will play.

Here’s the list of inactives for Sunday:

RB Elijah Mitchell (shoulder)
CB K’Waun Williams (calf)
CB Josh Norman (chest)
OL Aaron Banks
DL Zach Kerr

Mitchell and Kittle were both listed as ‘questionable’ on the Friday injury report. Mitchell is dealing with a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 2 that kept him out of last week’s game against Green Bay as well. Kittle has a calf issue that kept him to only a limited practice Friday.

Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw was also questionable with a knee injury and he will play against the Seahawks.

Cornerbacks Dre Kirkpatrick and Buster Skrine are both active as well, along with rookie CB Ambry Thomas who was a healthy scratch the last two weeks.

Here are the Seahawks’ inactives:

49ers practice report: George Kittle still missing

George Kittle still hasn’t practiced as the #49ers prepare for Week 4 vs. the Seahawks.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan seemed optimistic about tight end George Kittle’s availability for Sunday’s game against the Seahawks. Two days of practice haven’t matched the head coach’s optimistic tone.

“I mean, he should be alright this week,” Shanahan told reporters before Wednesday’s practice. “Just sorer today than we expected and we’ll take it day-by-day now.”

Kittle missed Wednesday’s session and was again a non-participant on Thursday’s participation report.

The good news for San Francisco is that Kittle is a veteran who doesn’t need a ton of work before playing. An extra day off to get healthy is more important than getting on the practice field.

Here’s what Thursday’s practice report looks like:

49ers roster moves: CB, DL reinforcements on the way

The #49ers opened practice windows for two players on Injured Reserve.

The 49ers made a couple roster moves ahead of Wednesday’s practice as they begin gearing up for an NFC West showdown with the Seahawks. Veteran cornerback Buster Skrine was officially added to the roster, and the practice windows were opened for defensive lineman Maurice Hurst and cornerback Davontae Harris.

Skrine gives the 49ers a veteran slot corner with K’Waun Williams sidelined by a calf strain. There was no corresponding move to get him on the roster since San Francisco was at 52 players.

Hurst and Harris both made the initial 53-man roster, but went on Injured Reserve which forced them to sit out at least three weeks.

Hurst suffered a high ankle sprain in the second week of the preseason against the Chargers. He’ll provide some additional depth on the 49ers’ interior defensive line that’s gotten carved up some in the first few games.

Harris joined the team late in camp and was a bit of a surprise on the final roster. He suffered a hamstring injury late in the preseason that was going to sideline him for the first few games. Now he finds himself back in the mix just in time. The 49ers desperately need help at that position and Harris gives them another player to work with in their quest to shore up their secondary.

Neither Hurst nor Harris count against the 53-man roster while they practice. The 49ers now that their window is open have three weeks to either place them on the active roster or put them back on IR for the rest of the season.

49ers practice report: George Kittle sits out with calf soreness

George Kittle sat out the #49ers’ Wednesday practice, but head coach Kyle Shanahan is optimistic for Sunday.

The 49ers began their week of preparation for a Week 4 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks missing some key names on the practice field.

Given the team’s injury woes early on, it’s never good to see players sitting out full sessions. However, with a couple exceptions, it sounds like the 49ers’ health should look a little better Sunday than it did on Wednesday’s practice report.

Here’s what Wednesday looked like:

Josh Norman has bruised lungs, may not miss any time

Cornerback Josh Norman suffered bruised lungs in the #49ers’ loss to the Packers, but he could still play in Week 4.

49ers cornerback Josh Norman left Sunday night’s game against the Packers with what was classified as a chest injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday told reporters Norman suffered a lung contusion and will be day-to-day.

Fluid in Norman’s lungs prompted the precautionary overnight hospital stay. Shanahan indicated Norman could practice Wednesday, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be ready by Sunday’s showdown with the Seahawks.

Norman played in 30 snaps Sunday night and was targeted twice for one yard and a touchdown according to Pro Football Focus. He also added a tackle and a forced fumble.

If Norman is unavailable against Seattle, the 49ers have Dontae Johnson, Deommodore Lenoir, Dre Kirkpatrick and Ambry Thomas who could all conceivably start across from Emmanuel Moseley. Cornerback Davontae Harris is expected to come off Injured Reserve this week as well.

49ers CB Josh Norman spent night in hospital

#49ers CB Josh Norman spent the night in the hospital after a scary injury he suffered against the Packers according to a report.

49ers veteran cornerback Josh Norman exited Sunday night’s game against the Packers with a chest injury. After the game head coach Kyle Shanahan said he was unsure of the severity of Norman’s injury. NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo on Monday morning reported Norman spent the night in the hospital because he was spitting up blood.

Garafolo noted all tests run on Norman were clear and his stay at the hospital was precautionary.

Norman, 33, signed with the 49ers the Monday before Week 1 and started each of their last two games. Against Green Bay he had one tackle and a forced fumble.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak with media members Monday afternoon and should have an additional update on the injured veteran cornerback.

Another 49ers CB exits vs. Green Bay

Josh Norman is questionable to return for the #49ers with a chest injury.

The 49ers couldn’t have had a worse game for their injury situation. An already thin secondary that’s dealing with injuries saw two players exit in the first half. The latest is cornerback Josh Norman who has a chest injury and is questionable to return.

Norman started opposite Emmanuel Moseley. Nickel corner K’Waun Williams also left Sunday night’s game and is officially questionable with a calf injury.
