All signs point to Jimmy Garoppolo’s return vs. Colts

All signs point to Jimmy Garoppolo returning for the #49ers against the Colts.

There’s nothing official, but all signs point to Jimmy Garoppolo returning from a calf injury to start against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday Night Football.

Garoppolo got hurt in the first half of the 49ers’ Week 4 loss to the Seahawks, and missed the entire second half of that game. He’d go on to miss the club’s Week 5 defeat in Arizona.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan going into the bye week intimated Garoppolo should be good to return in Week 7, but there wasn’t any certainty given the QB’s recent history of struggling with lower leg injuries. The last couple days have provided some additional clarity though.

The 49ers on Monday had a bonus practice where players return from their week away to go through a session where they re-acclimate to the rigors of an NFL week of preparation. Garoppolo was on hand for that session per reporters on site. That’s a good clue that he’s on track to return.

Another clue came in the form of something the 49ers didn’t do. They never brought in an additional quarterback despite the likelihood they’ll be without rookie quarterback Trey Lance in Week 7 because of a knee sprain. If neither he nor Garoppolo are available, Nate Sudfeld would get the start under center.

Had there been a question about Garoppolo’s availability, the 49ers very likely would’ve added another signal caller at some point leading up to Week 6 so Sudfeld would have a backup if he had to start. The fact San Francisco didn’t make a move at the position points to Garoppolo’s readiness for Sunday night vs. the Colts.

If the 49ers are going to get their season back on track following three consecutive losses, they’re going to need better play from Garoppolo. His chance to right the ship coming off an injury appears to be coming at Levi’s Stadium this week.

49ers roster moves: CB activated off IR, another released

The #49ers made a couple roster moves in their secondary.

The San Francisco 49ers on Monday made an in-house addition to their secondary. Cornerback Davontae Harris was activated off injured reserve, and cornerback Buster Skrine was released in a corresponding move.

Harris joined the 49ers late in the preseason but played well enough to work his way onto the active roster. He was immediately placed on Injured Reserve with a hamstring injury, and had his practice window opened prior to Week 4. Now he’ll join a 49ers secondary that in some ways is beginning to stabilize after a tumultuous start to the year.

The Bengals selected Harris in the fifth round of the 2018 draft. He played three games with them as a rookie, spent his second year in Denver, and played parts of last season with the Broncos and Ravens before landing with the 49ers this preseason. In 30 games and eight starts, Harris has 50 tackles, four pass breakups and one forced fumble.

Skrine signed with the 49ers ahead of their Week 4 matchup against the Seahawks. He played four special teams snaps in that game and was inactive for Week 5.

49ers roster moves: TE George Kittle to IR, WR Travis Benjamin moved up

The #49ers made a few roster moves when they put TE George Kittle on injured reserve.

The 49ers on Saturday announced a handful of roster moves as they navigate some injury issues.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco originally reported tight end George Kittle would go on injured reserve with a calf injury. The 49ers made that move official along with a few other tweaks ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Here’s a rundown on all the moves:

George Kittle to go on Injured Reserve

The #49ers will be without TE George Kittle for at least three games.

The 49ers will be without tight end George Kittle for at least three games. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco on Saturday reported Kittle will go on injured reserve as he deals with a calf injury.

Kittle missed two days of practice leading up to Week 4, and then didn’t practice in the lead up to Week 5 where he was listed as ‘doubtful’ on the final injury report.

Last season Kittle missed eight games with knee and foot injuries. Now he’ll be required to miss at least three games according to the NFL’s IR rules.

Kittle in four games this season has 19 receptions for 227 yards. He’s San Francisco’s second-leading receiver.

Ross Dwelley figures to slide into the starting tight end role with Charlie Woerner working as the second tight end. Jordan Matthews, who made a switch to TE from wide receiver this offseason is on the 49ers’ practice squad and could be elevated to the active roster for Week 5 in Arizona.

The 49ers have a Bye next week, so the earliest Kittle could return is Week 9 at Levi’s Stadium against the Cardinals assuming he goes on IR prior to Week 5.

49ers injury report: Jimmy Garoppolo out, George Kittle doubtful vs. Cardinals

Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) is out. George Kittle (calf) is doubtful. Here’s the rest of the #49ers’ Week 5 injury report:

The 49ers’ injury report for Week 5 came back with some not-so-good news for San Francisco. Starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is ruled out with a calf injury, and tight end George Kittle is doubtful also with a calf issue.

This isn’t ideal for the 49ers going into a crucial NFC West showdown against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals, but it felt like a matter of time before they were bitten by the injury bug in this manner after toeing the line without avoiding anything catastrophic since Week 1 when Raheem Mostert went down with a season-ending knee injury.

Here’s a rundown of their Week 5 injury report:

49ers rookie Trey Lance will make first NFL start Sunday vs. Cardinals

Niners rookie QB Trey Lance is gearing up for his first NFL start with Jimmy Garoppolo ruled out vs. Cardinals.

While this was the direction many saw coming, the 49ers have officially announced that rookie quarterback Trey Lance will make his first career NFL start Sunday against the Cardinals.

Starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who suffered a calf injury in the first half of last week’s loss to the Seahawks, didn’t practice all week.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday would be key in determining whether Garoppolo would possibly be able to suit up. While he tried to practice Friday, he ultimately wasn’t able to go, paving the way for Lance to make his official debut.

In relief of an injured Garoppolo last week, Lance completed 9-of-18 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns in the second half against the Seahawks. Lance added seven carries for 41 yards.

Lance took all of the first-team reps this week in practice, where there will be a gameplan tailored to his skillset against a very talented Cardinals team looking to remain undefeated.

In other injury news, tight end George Kittle has been battling a calf injury for the last two weeks. While he was able to play through it last week, he didn’t practice this week and has been ruled doubtful against Arizona.

Kyle Shanahan: Jimmy Garoppolo to test injured calf in practice

Jimmy Garoppolo is going to give it a go at #49ers practice Friday in an attempt to be ready for Sunday.

Jimmy Garoppolo hasn’t been on the field for the first two days of the 49ers’ preparations for the Arizona Cardinals. While that isn’t a great sign for his availability, the quarterback wants to still try and play Sunday.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said on KNBR in San Francisco that Garoppolo will practice Friday in an effort to get ready for Arizona.

“Jimmy told me he wants to give it a go tomorrow,” Shanahan told the Bay Area radio station. “So we’ll see him out on the practice field tomorrow. If he looks good then he’ll have a shot. If he can’t then we’ll shut him down.”

It’s hard to imagine the 49ers installed a game plan for rookie QB Trey Lance during Wednesday and Thursday’s practices, only to scrap it Friday so a hobbled Garoppolo could give it a go against the Cardinals.

On the other hand, Shanahan has been staunch in his stance that Garoppolo is the starting quarterback. If he’s healthy enough to play effectively it wouldn’t be a shock to see the team roll him out under the notion that he’s their starter no matter what.

Friday’s status report should give us a clearer picture of Garoppolo’s status.

49ers practice report: Jimmy Garoppolo still out, Trent Williams returns

Jimmy Garoppolo missed Thursday’s practice for the #49ers which casts an even bigger question mark over his status for Sunday.

The 49ers’ injury report from Thursday’s practice had two very notable pieces of information on it. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is still out with a calf injury after missing Wednesday’s session. Left tackle Trent Williams was a full participant after missing Wednesday because of a shoulder injury.

Garoppolo’s absence points even more toward rookie Trey Lance making his first-career start, although head coach Kyle Shanahan said he won’t rule out the QB until he’s required to by doctors. That will at least leave the door open for him to start in Arizona.

Williams missing Sunday would’ve meant the 49ers would start rookie Jaylon Moore at left tackle in the most important game of the year.

Here’s a full rundown of Thursday’s participation report:

49ers to sign K Joey Slye with Robbie Gould sidelined

The #49ers signed a kicker to replace the injured Robbie Gould.

The 49ers are set to bring in a kicker to replace Robbie Gould who’ll be sidelined for three-to-five weeks with a groin injury. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Tuesday reported Joey Slye will ink a deal to kick for San Francisco while Gould recovers.

Gould sustained his injury during pregame warmups before the 49ers played the Seattle Seahawks. Punter Mitch Wishnowsky held kicking duties Sunday and missed a 41-yard try and an extra point.

Slye, 25, made his NFL debut in 2019 with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent from Virginia Tech. In 32 games with Carolina across two seasons he hit 54 of his 68 field goal attempts and 64 of his 71 extra point tries. His career long is 56 yards.

This year he spent three games with the Texans where he connected on four-of-five tries and seven-of-eight extra points.

There’s no word on whether Gould will go on Injured Reserve which would require him to miss a minimum of three weeks.

49ers injury updates from Kyle Shanahan come with good news

The injury news for the #49ers was better than it could’ve been. Kyle Shanahan had updates on Trent Williams, George Kittle and others.

There was disaster potential for the 49ers going into their Week 5 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

After losing to the Seahawks 28-21 at Levi’s Stadium in Week 4, San Francisco appeared to once again be dealing with major injuries to key players. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo hurt his calf and missed the second half, left tackle Trent Williams left the game early, and kicker Robbie Gould didn’t play. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday spoke with reporters and offered a more positive outlook on the 49ers’ injury situation than the one given immediately after the game.

Garoppolo may not wind up missing any time, per the head coach. Here are the other injury updates from Shanahan’s Monday conference call:
