49ers vs. Cardinals game recap: Everything we know

Immediate reaction in the wake of the #49ers’ 17-10 loss in Arizona.

The 49ers’ squandered too many opportunities in their Week 5 loss to the Cardinals in Arizona.

San Francisco played well and gave the NFL’s final undefeated team all they could handle, but ultimately mistakes and miscues doomed the 49ers in their quest for their first NFC West victory.

It’s three losses in a row for the 49ers. Here’s what we know immediately following the game:

Quarter-by-quarter observations from 49ers’ loss to Cardinals

The #49ers battled in Arizona, but couldn’t pull off the upset. Here’s what we saw from each quarter.

Trey Lance’s first professional start resulted in a 17-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

San Francisco trailed 10-0 at the half and never had a chance to climb back into it. Here are our observations from Sunday’s game:

WATCH: Deebo Samuel scores vintage Deebo touchdown

Running back Deebo? Sure. Touchdown #49ers.

How about running back Deebo Samuel? The 49ers offense finally got rolling late in the third quarter against the Cardinals thanks to a big catch-and-run by Brandon Aiyuk and a personal foul on Arizona defensive end Chandler Jones. San Francisco capitalized on a toss play to Samuel where he followed the block of big left tackle Trent Williams, broke another tackle and got in for the 49ers’ first score of the game.

WATCH: DJ Jones sacks Cardinals QB Kyler Murray for huge loss

The #49ers need big plays like this one from DL D.J. Jones.

The 49ers needed a big game from their defensive line and they got one from defensive tackle DJ Jones on Arizona’s second series. On first-and-10 after a 49ers failed fourth-down conversion, Jones blew up the middle of the Cardinals offensive line and tracked down Cardinals QB Kyler Murray for a sack.

Murray ran straight backward and went down for a 14-yard loss. The big loss on first down put them well behind the sticks and the 49ers eventually forced a punt.

49ers inactives: 2 questionable DL will play

The #49ers had 2 DL listed as ‘questionable,’ but they’ll both suit up against the Cardinals. WR Travis Benjamin is also active.

The 49ers had a potential depth issue brewing on their defensive line heading into a crucial NFC West showdown with the Cardinals. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw and defensive end Samson Ebukam were both listed as ‘questionable’ on the Week 5 status report, but both players will suit up for Sunday’s game in Arizona.

Here is the list of inactives against the Cardinals:

QB Jimmy Garoppolo
WR Jauan Jennings
CB K’Waun Williams
G Aaron Banks
DT Zach Kerr
DB Buster Skrine
CB Ambry Thomas

There aren’t any surprises in this group. Skrine and Thomas were both active last week with Josh Norman nursing bruised lungs, but he was cleared to play this week and is set to line up across from Emmanuel Moseley against a pass-heavy Cardinals offense.

Veteran CB Dontae Johnson was the starting nickel cornerback a week ago with Williams sidelined, and he figures to retain that role again Sunday.

Wide receiver Travis Benjamin was activated off the practice squad and will suit up ahead of Jennings, who has been active all year. Benjamin could take over kick return duties, but he also had a good rapport with starting quarterback Trey Lance in the preseason.

49ers have another chance to upset favored Cardinals in Arizona

The #49ers are underdogs in Arizona, but this is familiar territory for them.

The 49ers were never going to be favored going into Arizona to take on the undefeated Cardinals. San Francisco has scuffled the last two weeks while Arizona continues winning and putting up a ton of points in the process. As a result, the Cardinals are favored by 4.5 points as of Saturday on Tipico Sportsbook, which is right about where the line was when the 49ers upset Arizona last year in the desert in Week 16.

Last season the Cardinals needed a win over CJ Beathard and the 49ers to solidify their spot in the playoffs. The 49ers had been eliminated and were just playing out the string. San Francisco not only covered the 5-point spread, but they took home an outright 20-12 victory.

Now they enter Sunday’s matchup as 4.5-point underdogs with their division hopes potentially on the line. There’s a lot to be said for desperation in the NFL, and the 49ers are the far more desperate team. This line has jumped around a little bit since opening at 2.5 points, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see San Francisco go in and cover.

Kyle Shanahan’s own words open door for QB change if Trey Lance shines vs. Cardinals

If we track everything Kyle Shanahan has said about the #49ers QB situation since July, Jimmy Garoppolo’s calf injury could open the door for a change under center.

The 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t want Jimmy Garoppolo to get hurt. Shanahan has been clear since training camp started that Garoppolo would be the starter and rookie Trey Lance was the backup, and reiterated that after Week 4’s loss to the Seahawks when Lance played the entire second half because of Garoppolo’s injury.

Now Garoppolo is unavailable for San Francisco’s Week 5 showdown against the Arizona Cardinals and Shanahan finds himself in perhaps the ideal spot when it comes to navigating the increasingly turbulent waters created by Lance’s selection with the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft.

It doesn’t sound like Garoppolo’s calf strain is going to keep him out long-term. A short-term absence opens the door for Shanahan to start Lance without moving on from the stance he took early in training camp.

“Just having Jimmy going, he’s our starter,” Shanahan said on July 27. “And we’re going to give all those guys every opportunity to improve. And if someone ever looks like they give us a better chance to win, we’ll make that decision.”

He reiterated that stance throughout camp and the preseason. Garoppolo is the starter until someone looks like they give the team a better chance to win.

The 49ers offense with Garoppolo was struggling after a terrific Week 1 performance. They were averaging only 4.8 yards per play from Week 2 through the first half of Week 4 (4.8 yards per play would rank 28th in the league), and there weren’t many signs it would be getting better or more consistent.

Now Shanahan gets to replace Garoppolo while still insisting the veteran is the starter and Lance is the backup.

“Yeah, our starting quarterback is hurt,” Shanahan told reporters Friday. “If he would’ve been a hundred percent today, we would have gone with him.”

Lance is replacing the injured starter on a short-term basis, which allows Shanahan the freedom to smoothly go back to Garoppolo once he’s healthy. Should the rookie struggle in his first start, the 49ers go into the Bye week with Garoppolo on the road to recovery. He gets inserted back into the starting lineup and Shanahan can talk about how Garoppolo is the starter and it was good for Lance to get some reps. No harm, no foul.

On the other hand, a Lance start gives Shanahan a chance to see if the rookie does enough to show he gives the 49ers a better chance to win. Lets go to the world where Lance plays well and gets San Francisco’s offense out of its three-week long rut. Shanahan would have a full four quarters of tape to point to where he could make the change to Lance and harken back to his July 27th statement: “And if someone ever looks like they give us a better chance to win, we’ll make that decision.”

Perhaps there’s zero chance Shanahan makes a switch. The plan may be to start Garoppolo as long as he’s available regardless of how Lance plays. It would be tough to reconcile that if the rookie shows improvement in this start though since Shanahan has also indicated that playing is the best way to develop a player is to play him.

Either way, if Shanahan does have an inkling of moving Lance into a starting role at some point in 2021, this will be a prime opportunity to do it going into the Bye week and it wouldn’t force the head coach to move off of anything he’s said to about his quarterback situation to this point. If Lance plays well, his first-career start could be followed by his permanent move to the top of San Francisco’s depth chart.

49ers’ division title hopes come down to Sunday vs. Cardinals

If the #49ers are going to be a factor in the NFC West — they have to win Sunday.

It’s not time to hit the panic button on the 49ers’ 2021 campaign just yet, but it may be nice to have handy depending on how Sunday’s matchup with the Arizona Cardinals goes.

There are two pretty clear paths for San Francisco going into Week 5. They’re 2-2 coming off consecutive losses. They need a win if they’re going to contend in what is so far the NFL’s best division.

Arizona topped the Rams in Week 3, who beat the Seahawks on Thursday, who beat the 49ers in Week 4. Everyone in the division has a win except San Francisco. A loss to fall to 0-2 in the division and 2-3 overall paints a bleak picture for their chances to regain NFC West supremacy.

As badly as a loss would damage their standing though, a win would improve it perhaps even more.

Knocking off the undefeated NFC West leaders to push every team to 1-1 in the division would breathe some life into a 49ers season that is foundering after four weeks. A win against the Cardinals would recalibrate expectations for what San Francisco’s ceiling could be this year and put them firmly back in the running for the division.

There’s the added element of Sunday potentially being the first start for rookie quarterback Trey Lance. If he guides the 49ers to a win and plays well in the process, there’d be reason to believe the team as a whole could elevate its ceiling with the added spark under center.

Seasons are never officially decided in Week 5, and there are paths to a division crown even if San Francisco loses in Arizona. A win makes that path much easier to fathom though, while a loss would make it more difficult to stay away from the panic button.

49ers favored vs. Cardinals, but can they cover?

The 49ers’ are giving 6.5 points to the Cardinals in their Week 1 matchup.

[jwplayer xqUrAatf-ThvAeFxT]

The 49ers snuck past the Cardinals twice last season, and Arizona looks primed to put together a club that could pose problems for San Francisco again in 2020. Despite that, the 49ers are 6.5-point favorites over the Cardinals on Sunday in their season opener according to Bet MGM.

While that 6.5-point line isn’t indicative of their two close contests from a season ago, the line has come down quite a bit since it opened in May. San Francisco was favored by as many as 9 in some books. Bettors pushing that number down with wagers on Arizona point to a clearer picture of how bettors think this game will go. Books place lines in a spot that will get equal action on both sides — they’re not necessarily trying to guess how much one team will win by or how close the game will be.

The 49ers had issues with mobile quarterbacks a season ago, and Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray figures to be even better in his second season equipped with All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Rookie linebacker Isaiah Simmons presents some matchup issues for the 49ers’ offense, and an optimistic outlook on the Cardinals combined with the “Super Bowl hangover” narrative for San Francisco makes an easy case for taking the Cardinals plus the points.

It’s more difficult to logically draw a line between the 49ers and a blowout victory in the season opener. They played two close games with Arizona last season, and now they could be going into this contest without wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, and center Ben Garland. Even if they were healthy, the 49ers probably weren’t going to run away with a win against the Cardinals. Their injuries make it even harder to envision them winning by a touchdown or more.

The pick: Cardinals +6.5

A new winning streak: Studs and duds from 49ers 36-26 win over Arizona

The 49ers moved to 9-1 with their victory over the Cardinals on Sunday in a hard fought game.

The 49ers moved to 9-1 with their comeback victory over the Cardinals on Sunday. It was the second time in 15 days that Arizona gave San Francisco a fight in two of the 49ers’ toughest tests of the season. They got off to a slow start on both sides of the ball Sunday, but bounced back thanks to strong performances up and down the roster.

Here are the studs and duds from the 36-26 win:

Stud: QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The quarterback had the most productive game of his career, completing 34-of-45 passes for a career-high 424 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. That included the game-winning drive where Garoppolo completed six-of-seven throws, including the game-winner to running back Jeff Wilson Jr. in the face of a six-man rush that got to him quickly. Garoppolo started slow in the first quarter with one completion for four yards, but was huge in the second half where he threw for 303 of his 424 yards. Of Jimmy Garoppolo’s 18 touchdown passes this season, eight have come against Arizona in two of his best games.
