Jim Nantz and Kevin Harlan explained the phantom flag at the end of Bills-Chiefs

It wasn’t a conspiracy, just an error on CBS’s part.

For a brief second after Josh Allen’s desperate fourth down heave hit the turf at Arrowhead Stadium, the Buffalo Bills had hope.

“There is a flag,” CBS play-by-play standby Jim Nantz announced to the masses watching at home.

Kevin Harlan, calling the game for Westwood One Radio, echoed the call. Except, no penalty had been called. The play would count. The Kansas City Chiefs were one clock-killing drive away from a third straight Super Bowl.

It was a confusing experience — one Nantz and Harlan shed light on to Sports Illustrated’s Jimmy Traina Monday morning.

“There’s a spotter that works in coordination with the broadcast team,” Nantz explained.

“I’m just taking what information is passed along. I’m scanning the field and for the life of me I can’t find a flag. But the graphic is up and I’m told, which just part of the chain of communication, I’m told there’s a flag. The first thing you do when you’re told that is you scan the field and identify for your own edification.

“I couldn’t find it.”

Harlan echoed his fellow broadcasting veteran’s sentiment.

“When I see it come up on our CBS scorebug at the bottom of the screen, I said flag,” said Harlan. “There are so many times a flag is thrown in the four corners of the field, you aren’t even looking there, but it’s thrown 20 yards downfield or five yards in the back of the line of scrimmage.

“A lot of times you scan it, but a lot of times you don’t see it. Even when we’re doing TV, you don’t see the flag. So, I have relied on TV when I’m doing CBS that the word coming from the officiating booth to our truck to me in the booth says a flag is down. Even if I don’t see it, I trust that process.”

So there you have it. This wasn’t a nefarious non-call to benefit the NFL agenda of putting the Chiefs in the biggest game of the year. It was a broadcast mistake that was easily corrected, even if it left some confusion in its wake.

Read Traina’s full breakdown here.

Why did the Bills abandon James Cook when they needed him most vs. the Chiefs?

James Cook roasted the Chiefs for three quarters. Then, with the game on the line, he was a ghost. Why?

With a trip to Super Bowl 59 on the line, Josh Allen wasn’t the Buffalo Bills most valuable player. It was running back James Cook.

Cook enjoyed a breakout 2024, recording his first 1,000-yard rushing campaign and tying for the league lead with 16 touchdowns on the ground. While Mack Hollins answered the call with a pair of deep receptions in the AFC title game Sunday, it was Cook’s ability to turn chicken crap into chicken salad that made this a tie game late at Arrowhead Stadium.

Nothing illustrated this better than the 80-yard drive that gave the Bills a 22-21 lead in the third quarter. First came a 33-yard run made possible by a thoroughly vicious stiff-arm of Nazeeh Johnson that could have the Kansas City cornerback considering skipping next week’s film session.

Then, an absolute masterclass in effort and body control in a gotta-have-it fourth down situation after the Chiefs had rebuffed back-to-back Allen sneaks.

Cook’s brilliance wasn’t limited to a single drive. His first touchdown saw him stare down a sea of white jerseys before navigating through the swells and into the safe harbor of the end zone.

Cook had 134 total yards on 16 touches (13 handoffs, three targets) and a pair of touchdowns with nine minutes left in the game. He finished with… 134 total yards. So why would a Buffalo team in dire need of offense turn away from the guy averaging nearly 8.4 yards each time the Bills looked his way?

Injury may have played a role, as trainers checked him out over a five minute span early in the fourth quarter. Still, that didn’t stop him from re-entering the game and gaining 23 yards on a screen play on a game-tying scoring drive. But that was the last time he touched the ball, splitting time with backup Ty Johnson (six carries, 19 yards) along the way. If he was hampered by something physical, it didn’t look that way on that big gain and head coach Sean McDermott didn’t mention it in his postgame interview with Evan Washburn.

Cook was third only to Patrick Mahomes and Xavier Worthy when it came to expected points added (EPA) among players with at least five touches Sunday night. Yet when the Bills started a potential game-winning drive with 3:33 to play and three timeouts trailing by three points, it was Johnson who got the first down handoff. He didn’t see the ball in any of the five plays that closed the book on Buffalo’s 2024 season.

At face value, this looks like a stunning dereliction of duties from offensive coordinator Joe Brady. Cook averaged 6.5 yards per carry. None of his three targets came more than a yard downfield and he managed to turn them into nearly 50 receiving yards. His extraordinary efforts almost single-handedly kept the Bills in the game.

But with the game on the line, he was a ghost.

It feels like there must be more to this story — an injury or some other issue that kept him from being anything more than a decoy on the field. The Bills haven’t commented either way. Regardless of why, his absence was a difference maker Sunday night. After dragging Buffalo to the end zone twice, he was an afterthought in the biggest drive of the season.

That’s baffling. Brady and company better have a good reason why.

Mack Hollins arrived for Bills-Chiefs AFC title game dressed like a Muppet in a crop top

Mack Hollins picked the most unhinged Muppet to channel for his walk into Arrowhead Stadium.

Mack Hollins is leaning into his weirdness. What started with barefoot arrivals in winter weather has evolved into an imaginary red carpet for a wideout who is doing to pregame arrivals what Clinton Portis once did for postgame press conferences.

That’s meant showing up in freezing temperatures while dressed for the beach or looking like the most swole member of the Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes to a mad scientist. But he may have outdone himself rolling up for the 2025 AFC Conference Championship Game vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.

Behold, Mack Hollins, semi-feral drummer for Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

Hollins, barefoot and sleeveless, walked into Arrowhead Stadium as Animal, Muppet head included in this video shot by NFL Network’s Sarah Walsh. Was this a statement on how he’ll approach Sunday’s game with reckless abandon? A warning to Josh Allen that he won’t be using any conjunctive verbs in the huddle? A suggestion we could see the aurora borealis shinin’ down on Dallas?

Either way; awesome.

Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes knew they’d get a playoff rematch when they met in November

“We’ll see you guys soon.” “We’ll do it again, baby.”

Patrick Mahomes will get a chance to make history as the first NFL quarterback to ever win three Super Bowls in a row. Josh Allen will get the chance to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs for the first time in four tries and bring his Buffalo Bills back to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1994.

It’s a showdown that seemed inevitable back in the regular season — so inevitable, in fact, Mahomes and Allen effectively predicted it back in November.

That’s when the Bills ruined Kansas City’s undefeated season with a 30-21 Week 11 win. After the game, Mahomes and Allen had the same message: let’s run it back.

“We’ll see you guys soon,” Allen remarked as a complimentary Mahomes strode toward him for a postgame handshake.

“We’ll do it again, baby,” Mahomes responded before walking back toward his locker room.

Lo and behold, their intuition held up (even if that hunch needed some help from the Baltimore Ravens to get there). Allen will get a chance to face the team that’s ended his season three of the last four years with a trip to Super Bowl 59 on the line. Mahomes will try to keep his perfect playoff record against Buffalo — a team that’s beaten him four straight times in the regular season — when the two teams meet in the AFC Championship Game January 26.

The Texans slot in the 2025 NFL Draft is now set

The Houston Texans know when they’ll be on the clock in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Houston Texans are on the clock.

Well, not yet, but at least they know their draft positioning entering April 25 in Green Bay.

Following a 24-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium, the Texans will select 25th overall in the 2025 draft. At 10-7, Houston had the worst record of any team remaining team, cementing the franchise with the lowest pick remaining.

Multiple positions could be in play ahead of free agency, but trench play has to be at the top of the list on both sides. Houston plans on upgrading one of the guard spots this offseason. The same goes for defensive tackle.

With Stefon Diggs set to hit free agency and Tank Dell out for most of next season, adding a wide receiver isn’t the worst option in the first round. And Houston could benefit from adding a long-term running mate with rookie Calen Bullock at safety.

The current pick is subject to trades, of course. Texans GM Nick Caserio has been a very aggressive dealmaker in the past, moving up nine spots in 2023 to select Will Anderson Jr. at the No. 3 overall following the selection of C.J. Stroud.

Last season, Caserio traded the first-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for two second-round picks and a future fifth-round pick, which was used in the trade for Diggs from Buffalo.
