With Mike Elko now running things, Texas A&M’s defense should be a top-20-ranked unit for as long as he’s in charge. In the secondary, expect a lot of height and speed, which is already a significant portion of the Aggies’ 2024 corner and safety group.
Within Texas A&M’s 2025 recruiting class, Elko has secured 19 commitments, shoring up the future of the offensive line while adding 5-star quarterback Husan Longstreet and 4-star wide receiver Kelshaun Johnson, who became the program’s latest commitment on Tuesday evening.
However, outside of the four cornerback prospects, Elko and his staff are still looking to make two safety additions. According to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, the Aggies are reportedly in a heated battle with the red-hot Oregon Ducks for 2025 5-star safeties Jonah Williams and Trey McNutt.
Williams, currently positioned as the 7th-ranked player in the class, is still predicted to land with Texas A&M after taking an official visit to College Station on June 7 but later visited Oregon on June 21. McNutt, the No. 1-ranked safety prospect in the class, also visited the Aggies on June 13 while heading to Eugene for an OV on June 21.
Right now, I expect Texas A&M to land one of the two prospects, leading toward Jonah Williams due to his close relationship with the coaching staff, while McNutt is slightly leaning toward the Ducks at this time.
Trey McNutt will announce his commitment on Friday, July 19, while Jonah Williams has not scheduled his announcement.
