Longhorns linebacker commits to Mississippi State via Transfer Portal

He was a redshirt freshman this season and still has multiple years of eligibility remaining

On Wednesday, the Texas Longhorns lost another member of their defense to the transfer portal. Linebacker Derion Gullette signed with Mississippi State after two years in Texas. He was a redshirt freshman this season and still has multiple years of eligibility remaining.

During the 2024 campaign, Gullette appeared in five games and recorded two tackles. Most of his playing time came against Colorado State, UTSA, and UL-Monroe. In four games, he also got snaps on special teams with the kickoff coverage unit.

While Gullette’s Longhorns career did not go as planned, he is a player who drew interest just a few years ago. Coming out of high school, he was ranked as the No. 121 recruit in the 2023 class and the No. 18 edge rusher, by 247Sports. That is one of the reasons, Gullette was a four-star recruit and a priority for Texas.

Before joining the Bulldogs, the Texas native drew interest from the Ole Miss Rebels and North Carolina Tar Heels. While both programs are full of talent, Gullette will get a second chance to show that he belongs in the SEC.

Although Gullerre’s role is still to be determined, he should get a chance to play against his former team at some point next season. That is a game he will be circling on his calendar.

Two Longhorns leave transfer portal, will stay at Texas for the CFB Playoff

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian says two Longhorns that entered transfer portal will stay with the Longhorns for the college football playoff.

Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian has announced two Longhorns that had entered the transfer portal will instead stay with UT through the college football playoffs.

Defensive linemen Justice Finkley and Tiaoalii Savea will remain with the team for now. Sark adds that a couple other guys in the portal might make the same choice.

“A couple of the guys that have gone in the portal that are going to stick around and stay throughout the remainder of the playoffs,” Sarkisian said. “Tia Savea is going to do that, Justice Finkley is going to do that. I think we have a couple other guys that are still trying to decide how they want to go about it.”

The fifth highest ranked prospect in Texas’ 2022 recruiting class, Finkley enrolled early at Texas in January of 2022 after selecting the Longhorns over Alabama, Colorado, and Michigan amongst 26 other offers. Finkley saw his snap count diminish in 2024, only appearing in six games.

Savea, a former top-10 prospect from Las Vegas transferred to Texas from Arizona in the spring of 2024. As a Longhorn, he had two tackles against UTSA and assisted on one against ULM for a total of three tackles for the season. At Arizona, Savea had 36 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery, and a blocked kick in two seasons.

Texas and Clemson will kick off from DKR on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT on TNT.

Texas hopes transfer portal signee Cole Brevard of Purdue makes instant impact at DT

While his statistics may not jump off the page, he was a solid player for Purdue and produced when called upon

Former Purdue defensive lineman Cole Brevard has found a new home for the final season of his college career. The Indiana native will reportedly transfer to Texas giving the Longhorns another weapon on defense. He spent the three seasons in West Lafayette, after transferring from Penn State following the 2021 campaign.

During the 2024 season, Brevard appeared in 11 games and recorded a career-high 19 tackles. He also added 1.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for a loss to his resume. While his statistics may not jump off the page, he was a solid player for Purdue and produced when called upon.

In Brevard, the Longhorns are getting a player who should be able to make an immediate impact. He finished his Purdue career with 38 tackles, including nine stops for loss. He also had 2.5 sacks and recovered two fumbles during 2023. While the expectations will be higher, the newest Longhorn is ready for the challenge.

After finishing the first year in the SEC with an 11-2 record, Texas has been busy adding talent for the 2025 campaign. They also landed former Utah punter Jack Bouwmeester in the transfer portal. With this new talented duo in the mix, the Longhorns should be able to build on their success.

While Brevard’s role is still to be determined, he will be an exciting player to watch for the Longhorns.

Texas Longhorns land Utah punter in the Transfer Portal

Texas Longhorns land commitment from Utah punter Jack Bouwmeester in the Transfer Portal. Punting was a UT weakness this season.

The Texas Longhorns have massively upgraded a position with the commitment of Utah Utes punter Jack Bouwmeester from the Transfer Portal. Bouwmeester has also already signed his paperwork with the Longhorns, according to 247Sports.

The Australian native entered the NCAA Transfer Portal as a grad transfer on Dec. 6, three days before non grad transfers could enter. Bouwmeester has one year of eligibility left. He started his career at Michigan State, but after a coaching change, Bouwmeester went back to Australia for a couple of years. He returned in 2022 and signed with Utah.

The 6-foot-3, 197 pound kicker has 60 punts in 2024 for 2,682 yards on an average of 44.7 yards per punt. 13 of the 60 punts went for 50+ yards and 9 landed inside the 20-yard line.

The Aussie, who punted well all three years at Utah, arrived in Austin Thursday and visited the Forty Acres for a couple of days before choosing Texas as his third and final stop of his collegiate career.

Texas’ longest punt this season was 52 yards. Bouwmeester had 3 games this year where he had a 60+ yard punt.

Former Longhorns QB to enter transfer portal again, looking for 3rd team

A former Longhorns QB is hitting the transfer portal for the second time in two years after leading his team to a bowl game.

Duke starting QB Maalik Murphy plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal according to ESPN. The former Longhorn will be one of the most sought after players in the portal after tossing a school-record 26 TDs this season.

Murphy, who has two years of eligibility left, led the Blue Devils to 9-3 record. He will not play in Duke’s Gator Bowl matchup with Ole Miss.

Landing Murphy was a transfer portal recruiting win for Duke coach Manny Diaz. Murphy picked the Blue Devils over a Oregon State, South Carolina and Baylor. This year, the Southern California native passed for 2,933 yards.

Murphy was the backup at Texas last year and started two games in relief of an injured Quinn Ewers, throwing for 477 yards and three TDs. His most memorable game was a 33-30 OT win over Kansas State in Austin. The Wildcats were led by current Ohio State QB Will Howard.

Defensive lineman Jermayne Lole flips commitment from Oklahoma to Texas

Oklahoma saw one of their new defensive line transfer portal additions flip his commitment to the rival Texas Longhorns.

The Oklahoma Sooners have had one of their newest defensive linemen depart the team via the [autotag]transfer portal[/autotag]. [autotag]Jermayne Lole[/autotag] has flipped his commitment from Oklahoma to the Texas Longhorns.

Lole announced the move via social media. He heads south to Austin before ever playing a snap for the Sooners. Both programs are entering their first season in the SEC.

Lole committed to the Sooners out of the transfer portal on April 22, but the senior, who has one year of eligibility remaining, has changed his mind just two and a half weeks later.

Lole produced at a high level at Arizona State before injuries limited him the previous few seasons. As a true sophomore in 2019, Lole recorded 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He played at Louisville in 2023, recording 19 total tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Lole was one of many high-profile additions to the Oklahoma defensive line in the 2024 recruiting and portal cycles for [autotag]Brent Venables [/autotag] and his staff. However, the addition of Damonic Williams last week creates a logjam at defensive tackle. A good problem to have, yes, but it can lead to situations like this.

He’ll suit up in the burnt orange for Steve Sarkisian, and the Sooners will see Lole on Oct. 12 in Dallas.

Oklahoma Sooners add transfer defensive tackle Jermayne Lole

Transfer defensive tackle Jermayne Lole committed to the Sooners Monday evening, giving Oklahoma an experienced piece for their young defensive tackle group.

Since the day Brent Venables arrived in Norman, the mission has been clear. Get the Oklahoma Sooners ready for the SEC. To that end, Venables and his coaching staff have been working tirelessly to overhaul the Sooners’ defense, in particular the defensive line.

And they added another significant piece on Monday with the commitment of Louisville transfer defensive tackle Jermayne Lole.

Lole started his career at Arizona State before transferring to Louisville. After a couple of productive seasons with the Sun Devils, Lole battled injuries from 2020-2022. However, as a sophomore in 2019, Lole recorded 71 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks.

He played in 12 games in 2023 and only recorded 19 total tackles, five tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He started nine games and tallied 13 total pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.

In five seasons, he has played more than 1,800 snaps, bringing a wealth of experience to the Sooners’ defensive tackle position.

Lole joins an ever-improving defensive tackle group that includes Da’Jon Terry, Gracen Halton, Jayden Jackson, Davon Sears and David Stone. It’s a group with substantial potential but lacking experience.

And the Sooners may not be done. Oklahoma is still in heavy pursuit of TCU transfer defensive tackle Damonic Williams. By all accounts, Williams enjoyed his weekend in Norman, but is still exploring his options for the 2024 season.

Lole provides another legit nose tackle for the Sooners to deploy in a rotation with Terry, giving Todd Bates and the Oklahoma coaching staff an experienced piece.

Could Texas have interest in Colorado CB Cormani McClain?

Cormani McClain says Texas is one of 11 schools that have contacted him since entering the portal.

One of the nation’s top cornerback prospects has entered the portal. Colorado defensive back Cormani McClain is looking to transfer and Texas is said to have expressed interest in bringing him to Austin.

McClain says he’s heard from 11 schools since he went to the transfer portal. Texas is one of those programs.

Should Texas bring McClain to the Forty Acres, it could be as much of a long term move as an immediate impact addition. That’s not to say that the former top cornerback recruit would not make an immediate impact, but rather that the Longhorns wouldn’t have to count on it.

Texas is in a good place at cornerback with Malik Muhammad, Jahdae Barron, Terrance Brooks, Jaylon Guilbeau and Gavin Holmes. The cornerback room has the starters and depth to compete in major college football. Albeit, McClain adds an upside that few players have at the college level.

The Longhorns don’t have to add McClain, but the move could make sense. The 2023 five star player ranked as the No. 1 cornerback and No. 13 overall player in the 247Sports composite. The Florida talent had 13 total tackles and two pass breakups as a freshman.

We’ll see if Texas adds any players who can play at Texas past the 2024 season.
