CBS is bringing the Doink Cam back for the AFC championship broadcast

The Doink Cam is back for Chiefs-Bills on Sunday night.

CBS changed the broadcasting game for Super Bowl 58 last year, introducing a “Doink camera” to give fans an up-close and personal look at one of our favorite football misfortunes.

Last year’s game featured six cameras embedded into the goalposts that would show the ball passing through (or by) the uprights, and as many fans hoped, the ball clanging off the field goalposts in the event of a doink.

Now, the Doink Cam is set for a comeback for Sunday night’s AFC championship between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium. CBS teased the return with a social media video showing what appears to be a doink captured by the cameras during warmups at last year’s game.

Chiefs and Bills kickers Harrison Butker and Tyler Bass will just hope to avoid being a part of any viral moments during Sunday night’s game.

How well has Commanders’ QB Jayden Daniels played in playoffs?

Some super-impressive numbers from Jayden Daniels.

It’s a team sport, and no other sport more than football relies upon your teammates.

Though Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels receives most of the praise, the defense’s five turnovers in Saturday’s 45-31 victory over the top-seeded Lions should not be overlooked.

It should also not be overlooked that Dyami Brown is playing his best ball of his four seasons, that the Commanders pounded the ball, running 42 times for 182 yards, and that the offensive line opened holes for running backs and kept Daniels protected, not surrendering a sack.

Yet, having said all of that, “How well is Jayden Daniels playing in the playoffs?”

Well, four quarterbacks are remaining in these playoffs. In the AFC, there are Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs) and Josh Allen (Bills). In the NFC are Jalen Hurts (Eagles) and Daniels (Commanders).

Of those four quarterbacks still playing for the Super Bowl ring this season, do you realize that Daniels has the highest passer rating (116.2)?

How about the touchdown to interception ratio? Daniels has the best thus far at four touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Remember that Daniels is the only quarterback remaining who has played a road playoff game this playoffs. That’s right; Mahomes, Allen, and Hurts have been able to play only at home, while Daniels has not only won on the road but has also had to play only on the road and twice during these playoffs.

Oh, I’m not done yet. When it comes to passing yards per game in these playoffs, guess who is first with 283.5 yards per game? That’s right, it is Jayden Daniels.

How about yards per pass attempt? If you guessed Daniels is atop the four remaining quarterbacks, you guessed correctly. Daniels has a solid 8.59 yards per passing attempt.

Daniels has completed 46 of his 66 passes in his two road playoff games. Well, what do you know? That is good enough for second place in completion percentage, 69.7.

I guess Jayden Daniels is only human, after all.

NFL Divisional Weekend roundup

Recapping all four games from the NFL divisional round, setting up the AFC and NFC Championship games

One of the more exciting weekends of the NFL season is in the books, though it ended up being not so exciting for the Lions. Still, we are down to just four teams vying for the Lombardi Trophy in New Orleans. Let’s do a quick roundup of the four games from this weekend.

Chiefs defeat Texans, 23-14

Some of the penalties called in this games were quite rough and didn’t help cool off the conspiracy theories against the league and the Chiefs. Still, even the officials didn’t affect the Texans allowing quarterback C.J. Stroud to be sacked eight times, which certainly hurt a number of drives for Houston. They dug themselves too big of a hole that is almost impossible to climb out of in a playoff game at Arrowhead.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 177 yards and a touchdown, 117 of those yards and the touchdown to tight end Travis Kelce. The Chiefs won despite being out-gained on offense 336-212. Neither team committed a turnover.

The Chiefs advance to their 7th consecutive AFC Championship Game and their 6th in that span at home.

Commanders defeat Lions, 45-31

Not spending too much time on this one here since we’ve covered the game head to toe. Ultimately, five turnovers in a playoff game, including three Jared Goff interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) is incredibly hard to win with, especially when you don’t create a turnover of your own.

Washington heads to their first NFC Championship Game since the 1991 season, when they defeated the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI. Could a rematch be in their future?

Eagles defeat Rams, 28-22

Saquon Barkley broke free for a 78-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter, his second touchdown of the day of at least 60 yards, to seal the victory for the Eagles…it just took much longer to actually secure the win.

The Rams stormed down the field and scored just two minutes later to pull within 28-22, got the ball back and got into the end zone before Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter sacked Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford (26-of-44 passing, 324 yards, two touchdowns) on third down and then the Eagles forced an incomplete pass on fourth down.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts went 15-of-20 for 128 yards and added 70 yards on the ground. Barkley finished with 205 yards and two scores on 26 carries.

The Eagles will host the Commanders in the NFC Championship on Sunday. The division rivals split their season series but are meeting for the just the second time ever in the playoffs, the other came in the 1990 postseason, which Washington won 20-6. This is the first NFC Championship Game featuring a pair of NFC East teams since the Giants defeated Washington to win the 1986-87 NFC title.

Bills defeat Ravens, 27-25

You feel sick for Ravens tight end Mark Andrews, unless you’re a Bills fan. Andrews had the game-tying two-point conversion in his hands and let it slip away. Baltimore did not secure the ensuing onside kick and it goes down as another disappointing playoff exit for likely NFL MVP Lamar Jackson (18-of-25, 254 yards, two touchdowns, one interception).

Bills quarterback and likely NFL MVP runner-up Josh Allen went 16-of-22 for 127 yards and rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Bills to their second AFC Championship Game appearance in five seasons. Just like after the 2020 season, the Bills will head to Kansas City as they look to dethrone the two-time reigning Super Bowl champions.

Detroit Lions Podcast: Divisional round preview and coaching carousel updates

Detroit Lions Podcast: Divisional round preview and coaching carousel updates, plus a recap of dismantling the Vikings

The latest edition of the Detroit Lions Podcast is now available to watch or stream. This episode focuses on a few different topics.

Recorded live on Wednesday evening, we quickly recap the win over Minnesota and how Aaron Glenn set the blueprint for exactly how the Rams also blew out the Vikings in the wild card matchup.

Glenn is a hot commodity on the coaching carousel, with the Lions defensive coordinator interviewing for head coaching positions with the Jets and Saints, among others. Where does he wind up? We make our best guesses.

The same is true with Ben Johnson, and the situation with Detroit’s offensive coordinator is more complex. Does he really want to leave? Are the Las Vegas rumors legit? Could the Lions offense survive without him? We cover all that, too.

Then it’s onto Washington and Saturday night’s game in Ford Field against the Commanders. While the Lions need to respect any team that just won a road playoff game, this seems like a game the Lions win if they play their brand of top-level football.

Lions vs Commanders will feature officiating crew Detroit hasn’t seen in 2024

The Lions vs Commanders game in the NFC Divisional Round will feature an officiating crew Detroit hasn’t seen in 2024, headed by referree Ron Torbert

The NFL assigned the officiating crews for the divisional round of the playoffs, which includes the Detroit Lions hosting the Washington Commanders on Saturday, January 18th. The Lions will work with a crew that they have not seen in the 2024 season.

Referee Ron Torbert and his crew earned the assignment. His crew has consistently been one of the most flag-happy. Torbert’s crew threw 237 flags in 16 games, topped only by Clete Blakeman’s crew. That includes a Week 8 game between Seattle and Buffalo that featured an astronomical 24 flags. Torbert officiated one Washington game this year, their Week 13 blowout win over the Tennessee Titans. In that game, Torbert’s crew assessed 19 penalties.

His crew is noted for aggressively calling offensive holding and defensive pass interference. The latter infraction could be a big one in Saturday’s game. Detroit (18 times) and Washington (19) were the two most-penalized teams for defensive pass interference in the regular season.

Lions playoff schedule: Detroit will host Commanders next Saturday night

The Commanders beat the Buccaneers 23-20 on a last-second field goal to advance to play the Lions in Ford Field in the NFC Divisional Round

Get ready for some postseason football at Ford Field next weekend. After waiting through the bye week to find out the opponent for the NFC Divisional Round game, the Lions will host the Washington Commanders.

The game will be played Saturday night with an 8 p.m. ET kickoff.

The NFL announced the division round schedule after Sunday night’s game between Washington and Tampa Bay, the only competitive game of the Wild Card Weekend thus far. Washington banked in a game-winning field goal as time expired to bear Tampa Bay, 23-20. It was the Commanders first postseason win since 2005.

Monday night’s game between the Rams and Vikings, which will be played in Arizona due to the wildfires in the Los Angeles area, will determine the final matchup of the divisional round bracket. The winner will play at Philadelphia, easy winners over Green Bay earlier on Sunday.

A look into Detroit’s playoff history in the Super Bowl Era

A look into Detroit’s playoff history in the Super Bowl Era

Ever since the Super Bowl became the biggest stage in American sports in 1967, the Lions have not had the best history. However, change has come in Detroit and it warrants a deeper look.

To begin, it took the Lions three years to make their first Super Bowl playoff appearance in 1970. That being said, the game ended in a 5-0 loss against the Dallas Cowboys. Their next appearances were in 1982 and 1983, but yet again found themselves in the loss column.

But, at the turn of the decade in the 1990s, Detroit found themselves to be a playoff team in 1991. Backed by superstar running back Barry Sanders, the 90s looked to be a decade where Lions fans could finally put the team’s harsh past behind them. It started off great, as Detroit won their first playoff game in the Super Bowl era against the Dallas Cowboys. Moving onto the Conference Championship, the Lions ended their season against the eventual Super Bowl Champions, the Washington Redskins.

After the playoff run, it seemed to again be looking up for Detroit, but the rest of the 90s ended pretty disappointingly. The Lions were in the Wildcard Round in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, and 1999 and didn’t win any of them.

The 2000s were very difficult for the franchise as they did not make the playoffs once throughout the decade. That being said, the drafting of quarterback Matthew Stafford allowed Detroit what seemed like a fresh start, but in reality it was just more of the same. Three wildcard appearances in 2011, 2014, and 2016, and again all of them lost.

Then came 2023, a monumental year for the Lions. A rebuilding process that had been in place for the last few years finally started gelling. Head coach Dan Campbell seemed to have figured out their brand of football and it was the teams first playoff appearance in seven years. Detroit had also not won a playoff game in 32 years and they were at home ready to face the Los Angeles Rams. It was a hard fought game and the Lions pulled it off 24-23, but they were not done yet. Another home game, that time against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, another tough win. It was now time for the conference championship against the stacked San Francisco 49ers. It was a close gritty game but unfortunately, Detroit came up just short, keeping them out of the Super Bowl for the 56th straight year.

That being said, the 2024 Lions have accomplished something no other Detroit team in the past has, the number one seed in the NFC. That will allow the team a bye, the chance to play the lowest remaining seed in the divisional, and home field advantage. It has been arguably the most successful Lion’s season of all time and it could very well end up with Detroit hoisting their first Lombardi Trophy in February.

Bengals officially eliminated from playoffs

The Bengals didn’t have the things out of their control go their way on Sunday.

The Cincinnati Bengals could only watch from afar as their playoff hopes were extinguished on Sunday.

There, the Kansas City Chiefs trotted out backups against the Denver Broncos and were promptly blown out, 38-0. That result sends the Broncos to the seventh and final seed in the AFC playoffs.

Joe Burrow and the Bengals took care of business on Saturday night with the Week 18 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the season finale. But they needed Jets and Chiefs upsets to slip in as the last and final seed.

The Bengals finished the season on a five-game tear, winning more games in the final five weeks than they had over the first 13. They desperately needed to not drop the opener against three-win New England, a one-point loss to Kansas City or both games to Baltimore by a combined total of four points, to name a few close outcomes.

Rest assured, the slow starts under head coach Zac Taylor will once again be a major point of conversation this offseason.
