Mark Daigneault discusses playoff series against Pelicans, Zion Williamson’s absence

Mark Daigneault discusses playoff series against Pelicans, Zion Williamson’s absence.

After nearly a week of waiting, the Oklahoma City Thunder finally learned their first-round opponent will be the New Orleans Pelicans following the play-in tournament.

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault talked about the matchup following Saturday’s practice. It was the final practice before the start of the playoffs for the first-seeded Thunder.

“They’ve strung together a really good year again. A team we have our respect for,” Daigneault said on the Pelicans. “I’m expecting a huge challenge for this series,”

The short-handed Pelicans will likely play the first round without Zion Williamson. The two-time All-Star suffered a hamstring strain in their play-in tournament loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

It’s a massive blow that can alter the series. After battling health issues the last two years, Williamson has enjoyed a career season. He’ll miss at least two weeks.

Against the Lakers, Williamson scored a season-high 40 points before his leg injury. Without him, the Pelicans will rely on Brandon Ingram and C.J. McCollum to make up for their best player’s absence.

“It changes them significantly. He’s just such a unique player,” Daigneault said about Wiliamson’s absence.” There’s a really good version of them without him and there’s a really good version with him.

“I think they become a little bit more space-oriented, pick-and-roll oriented on offense. Defensively, they’re more light-sized and they do a lot more switching.”

The Thunder will enter the series fully healthy and rested. Meanwhile, the short-handed Pelicans are fresh off two highly intense postseason matchups.

OKC Thunder to face New Orleans Pelicans in first round of 2024 NBA playoffs

OKC Thunder to face New Orleans Pelicans in first round of 2024 NBA playoffs.

The Oklahoma City Thunder will face the New Orleans Pelicans in their first-round series. This comes after the Pelicans’ 105-98 win over the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament to earn the eighth seed on Friday.

Brandon Ingram had 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting, six rebounds and six assists. Trey Murphy III totaled 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and eight rebounds. Jonas Valanciunas tallied 19 points and 12 rebounds.

The first-seeded Thunder look to collect their first playoff series win since 2016. This is the first of presumably several playoff trips for the trio of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren.

The Pelicans will likely be without Zion Williamson for most of the first round as he recovers from a hamstring strain. Ingram has looked hobbled at times since his return from a bruised knee.

In their season series, the Thunder won two of the three matchups. OKC’s loss included a blown 22-point lead. Game 1 will be on Sunday. The full series schedule can be read here.

Boston Celtics studying 2008 title squad ahead of the 2024 NBA Playoffs

Sometimes, the coaching staff, players, or executives will tip their hand and let you know a bit about what it is they have on the docket

The Boston Celtics have earned a reputation for running one of the tightest ships in the league in terms of keeping on top of rumors. And they deserve it, as most of the time, we have no idea whatever of what their team building plans might be until the news breaks via a trusted source.

But sometimes, the coaching staff, players, or executives will tip their hand and let you know a bit about what it is they have on the docket. And at a recent Celtics practice, word was shared that the team is studying the 2008 title squad ahead of the start of the 2024 NBA Playoffs.

And while we don’t know exactly what it is they are focusing on, the hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, reflected on the process in a recent pod, and how it might help Boston in the postseason. Check it out below!

76ers’ Paul Reed just gave the Knicks unnecessary bulletin-board material

The last thing the tough Knicks need is more motivation.

Everyone knows that, on paper, the New York Knicks are a better matchup for Eastern Conference NBA playoff teams this year than the Boston Celtics. It shouldn’t be controversial to think wanting the 50-win opponent over the one that won 64 games is better for your team’s chances.

But if you’re actually one of the players going up against the Knicks very soon, you probably shouldn’t share these thoughts in public. Oh no.

During Thursday’s episode of Run It Back on FanDuel TV, Philadelphia 76ers backup big man Paul Reed came on the show to discuss his team’s recent play-in win and their upcoming first-round series against the Knicks.

When asked about the 76ers’ play-in thought process in potentially playing the Knicks or Celtics, Reed openly said that the Knicks were the “easier” matchup. Again, that’s probably a true statement. But if you’re someone actually playing against that team, that’s not something you should say on television!

The Knicks are one of the best defensive teams in NBA basketball. They make you work for every single inch for all 48 minutes, and they beat you up in the process while doing it. While yes, the Knicks are likely an easier matchup than the Celtics, you typically don’t want to feed tough-nosed teams like them any bulletin-board material.

Good job to Paul Reed. He may have just motivated the grinding Knicks even more.

Jalen Williams talks about bond with Thunder fans ahead of home playoff games

Jalen Williams talks about bond with Thunder fans ahead of home playoff games.

Before the Oklahoma City Thunder’s regular-season finale win, Jalen Williams addressed the home crowd and thanked them for their continuous support throughout the year.

Before he handed the microphone back, Williams closed out with a statement that sent chills down the spine of the fanbase: “Welcome back Loud City.”

With the Thunder’s first NBA playoff game set to happen on Sunday, April 21, it was an appropriate sendoff to the regular season. As the year has progressed, the home crowds have grown louder.

Expect the home crowds to return to previous levels of chaos by the time Game 1 tips. Williams has been a fan favorite since his arrival to OKC in 2022 and his interactions with the fanbase have only strengthened that relationship.

When discussing his relationship with the fans, Williams talked about how much of an advantage they can bring in a playoff setting as the Thunder hope to collect their first playoff series win since 2016.

“It’s a really cool bond that I’m kinda growing with the fanbase. Something I want to keep going through and creating,” William said. “It’s fun interacting with them. It’s super loud all the time.”

During the 2010s, the Thunder crowd was widely recognized as one of the best homecourt advantage in the playoffs. Considering this is the first of likely several postseason trips for this core, that atmosphere is set to return to OKC.

Mark Daigneault addresses winning NBCA’s 2023-24 Coach of the Year award

Mark Daigneault addresses winning NBCA’s 2023-24 Coach of the Year award.

Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault was announced as the NBCA’s winner for 2023-24 Coach of the Year.

In his fourth season as the head coach, Daigneault led OKC to the youngest top seed in league history. The Thunder finished with a 57-25 record, a 17-win jump from last season’s 40-42 record.

The traditional Coach of the Year honor has not been announced, but Daigneault is likely the favorite to win that award. Following the Thunder’s practice on Wednesday, the 39-year-old talked about the achievement.

“I’m humbled. Great respect and admiration for other coaches. Any time you’re recognized by your peers, there’s something meaningful about that,” Daigneault said. “… (It) starts with the players but then all of the people in the organization. All the invisible work that gets done the team benefits from. In this case, I get singled out for it.

“Certainly humbled and grateful for the recognition but at the same time wanting to make sure I spread that back out.”

Daigneault has always been passive about receiving credit for the job he’s done since being promoted to Thunder head coach in 2020. As OKC ascends to one of the best squads in the league, it was only fair to assume he’d also get recognized for the job he’s done to turn around the franchise.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander not concerned with anti-Thunder national narratives

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander not concerned with anti-Thunder national narratives.

As the NBA playoffs soon begin, national pundits have taken their fair share of jabs towards the youthful Oklahoma City Thunder.

A chaotic regular-season finale saw luck break the Thunder’s way as they captured the top seed. They now await the winner of the Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Pelicans to learn who gains the eighth seed.

Despite the Thunder being near the top in traditional and advanced metrics — they finished top four in net rating, offensive rating and defensive rating — skeptics point towards their youth and experience for reasons why they can fall short in their playoff debut as a core.

After the Thunder’s playoff practice on Wednesday, their two best players spoke about the outside noise.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander — who’s the face of the Thunder and will likely finish second in MVP — hushed away the national narratives, stating it’s something they’ve always heard.

“I heard that all year. It’s not gonna change,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “We’re still young, we’ll probably be young for another four, five years. We don’t worry about it. We focus on what goes on in these four walls.”

It seems like the Thunder refuse to put stock into what national media figures have to say. Jalen Williams attested to that by also revealing they only care about what’s internally noted among them.

“Not concerned about what’s going outside of this building,” Williams said.

OKC’s young age has always been a sticking point for those who want to doubt its potential playoff success.

The only way Gilgeous-Alexander and his teammates can shut down those concerns will involve the Thunder winning their first playoff series since 2016.

Could the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Playoffs?

If and when they get past the play-in tournament, how would they fare against Boston?

Could the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Playoffs? Or is this paranoia?

Speaking on a recent episode of the CLNS Media “Big 3 NBA” podcast, host A. Sherrod Blakely was joined by Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer to discuss the hot streak that the Sixers are ending their season on, and how it may carry into the playoffs.
