The Boston Celtics have learned from their past mistakes – and it shows

Will their improved mentality pay big dividends in the form of a banner for Boston?

In many a season past, the Boston Celtics have been their own worst enemy, allowing a lack of focus and intensity derail their title aspirations on more than one occasion. But this season, we have seen the Celtics evolve, taking care of their business against the sort of lesser ball clubs that have plagued them in prior postseasons.

Will their improved mentality pay big dividends in the form of a banner for Boston? And how might the injury to star Boston big man Kristaps Porzingis impact the Celtics’ postseason plans in their Eastern Conference finals series with the Indiana Pacers and beyond?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, took a closer look on a recent episode of their show. Check it out below!

Celtics Lab 260: On Boston escaping Indy with a Game 1 win, what’s coming in Game 2 with Kory Waldron

How will they manage to stay afloat in their frontcourt rotation with Kristaps Porzingis still several games away from a return?

Game 1 of the Boston Celtics Eastern Conference finals series with the Indiana Pacers is in the books, and the Celtics have a 1-0 series lead with their 133-128 win.

But it took overtime to pull it off, and Boston digging deep with a few lucky breaks to pull out the win, a few minor mistakes over the course of the contest nearly costing them the win in their own arena of TD Garden (and home court advantage with it). Perhaps having been burned so many times before in similar situations helped them find the necessary gear, but there are some serious concerns in need of a fix for Boston to advance to the 2024 NBA Finals.

How will they manage to stay afloat in their frontcourt rotation with Kristaps Porzingis still several games away from a return? Can they keep using drop coverage so liberally? And what players off their bench can make an impact in this series?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Kory Waldron, the host of the “Full Access Hoops” podcast to break down what we saw in Game 1 and what we expect in Game 2. Make sure you check it out to get up to speed on all things East finals.

Watch: Jaylen Brown forces OT in Game 1 of the East finals

Jaylen Brown banked in a clutch 3-pointer in Game 1 of the East finals, forcing overtime en route to a Celtics win.

The Boston Celtics grabbed a 133-128 overtime victory over the Indiana Pacers Tuesday night, moving to 1-0 to open the Eastern Conference finals. But this victory was far from easy for Boston.

The Celtics were down in the final moments of the fourth quarter as the Pacers offense continued to generate buckets. Down 3 points with one a few seconds remaining, All-Star Jaylen Brown forced a turnover with 8 seconds left in the game to earn Boston a possession down 3 points underneath the Pacers basket. The ensuing play saw Brown take and make a corner 3-pointer to tie the game and force overtime. From there the Celtics took care of business, securing a 133-128 win.

Check out the improbable shot from Brown courtesy of Bleacher Report’s YouTube page.

PHOTOS: Boston vs. Indiana – Celtics earn 133-128 Game 1 OT win

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics’ Game 1 of their East finals series vs. the Pacers.

The Boston Celtics squeaked past the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals with a 133-128 overtime victory. Boston entered the series as heavy favorites to win the series, and teams that win Game 1 of an NBA conference finals have gone on to win the series 77.4% of the time.

The Celtics and the Pacers were the top two offenses in the NBA this season, and Game 1 opened as a scoring clinic. Boston made it to the rim with ease, while Indiana benefitted from hot shooting. In the second half, however, Boston was able to take control of the game’s tempo, grinding things down with aggressive defense and an emphasis on attacking the rim, though the Pacers refused to relent. An Indiana run late saw the Celtics fall behind in the final moments of the game, but after Jaylen Brown was able to force overtime, Boston recaptured their defensive intensity and closed the door on the Pacers.

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics’ Game 1 of their East finals series vs. the Pacers.

What should we be watching for in the Boston Celtics – Indiana Pacers Eastern Conference finals?

What else do we need to know?

What should we be watching for in the Boston Celtics – Indiana Pacers 2024 NBA Eastern Conference finals? We know that the Pacers will be without the services of Bennedict Mathurin throughout the series with a torn labrum, and that star Boston big man Kristaps Porzingis will miss at least Games 1 and 2.

We know the Pacers play fast and don’t defend well, the Celtics play slower and defend about as well as it gets. Both teams can pour paints in from all over the court, and that Boston will still have more talent on the court. What else do we need to know? The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, broke it down for us on a recent episode.

The Indiana Pacers should not be a problem for the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals

This does not mean that the Pacers will be a pushover for the Celtics, however.

The Indiana Pacers should not be a problem for the Boston Celtics in the NBA’s 2024 Eastern Conference finals. And while it is important to note that this does not mean that the Pacers will be a pushover for the Celtics (Boston played them to a tight 3-2 record in the league’s 2023-24 regular season when you include their results from the in-season tournament), it is to say that the Celtics should not need more than 6 games (maybe just 5) to win the series.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “The Big Three NBA” podcast, A. Sherrod Blakely, Gary Washburn, and Kwani Lunis, recently weighed in one why they believe Boston should make quick work of Indiana in the East finals.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear why they think this is the case.
