Oklahoma Sooners 2024 signee among On3’s best fits

The Oklahoma Sooners added to their already deep safety room with one of On3’s best fits of the 2024 recruiting cycle.

The Oklahoma Sooners have been on a tear on the recruiting trail since Brent Venables and his staff arrived. In three recruiting cycles since arriving in Norman, Venables has put together three top-10 classes.

The biggest difference in Oklahoma’s recruiting is coming on the defensive side of the ball. One area where Oklahoma has had a lot of success is the safety position.

Venables and Brandon Hall have added [autotag]Robert Spears-Jennings[/autotag], [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag], [autotag]Daeh McCullough[/autotag], [autotag]Jaydan Hardy[/autotag], [autotag]Mykel Patterson-McDonald[/autotag], and [autotag]Reggie Powers[/autotag]. To go along with Billy Bowman, the Sooners may have one of the best safety groups in the nation.

The Sooners earned Powers’ commitment after he decommitted from Michigan State early in the fall. According to On3, Powers to the Sooners was one of the best fits in the [autotag]2024 early signing period[/autotag].

Reggie Powers could be the thunder to Peyton Bowen‘s lightning. Powers is 6-foot and already over 200 pounds that loves to play violently. His demeanor and attitude when it comes to playing near the line of scrimmage is rare for a secondary player. Bowen covers so much grass and is able to play as a true center field safety in the secondary, and he also plays a lot of man coverage in the slot. Having a player like Powers complement him as a downhill weapon from the secondary that can take on a heavier box role could be one of the better pairings in college football. – Cody Bellaire, On3 National Scout

According to On3, Powers was the No. 10 safety in the cycle and the No. 152 player in 2024. He is the seventh-highest-rated prospect in the Sooners’ 2024 class.

His combination of size, speed, and power, to go along with his versatility, will make him a great fit for the Sooners’ defense. Brent Venables loves to move his safeties around in his multiple defense. Powers could be deployed near the line of scrimmage as a strong safety or the cheetah or could be used as the deep free safety.

The Sooners’ safety depth chart looks like one of the deepest position groups on the roster for 2024. As Oklahoma continues to build its defense, Reggie Powers and the other safeties will be key to their success.

7 Takeaways from the Oklahoma Sooners 2024 signing class

The Oklahoma Sooners locked in all 27 commits to their 2024 signing class and here are seven takeaways.

The Oklahoma Sooners found success on the recruiting trail in each of the three cycles Brent Venables has been in Norman. Because they signed all 27 commitments on the first day of the early signing period, the Sooners locked up a third-consecutive top 10 recruiting class.

It was a great day for the Sooners on the recruiting trail. It also was a stress-free morning: The Sooners had their class locked up by 11:30 a.m. CT.

Now they turn their attention to their remaining targets on the recruiting trail, namely Dominick McKinley, who isn’t expected to sign until the February’s national signing day.

Even if they don’t pull off an improbable flip with McKinley, the Sooners have put together another really strong recruiting class on both sides of the ball.

Here are some takeaways from the Sooners 2024 signing class:

In-state star athlete signs with the Oklahoma Sooners

One of the most productive players in the state of Oklahoma signs national letter of intent with the Sooners.

Andy Bass, one of the most productive players in Oklahoma, is joining the Sooners after submitting his national letter of intent during the early signing period. Bass will join the Sooners as a preferred walk on.

Bass is a three-star athlete and the No. 5 player in the state according to Rivals. The dynamic quarterback for Heritage Hall threw for 3,144 yards and 35 touchdowns, ran for 1,478 yards and 30 touchdowns and had one reception for 71 yards and a touchdown. He accounted for 65 touchdowns during his senior season.

The Sooners expect to use Bass in a variety of ways. He will spend time with the running backs but will also learn the wide receiver position as he gets acclimated to college football.

Along with Taylor Tatum and Xavier Robinson, Bass joins a great group of running backs at Oklahoma. It’s a deep position group that will have substantial competition for carries, but Bass will have a shot to carve out a role.

He’ll likely redshirt his freshman year after suffering an injury in the Oklahoma state playoffs. Whenever Bass does step foot on the field for the Sooners, he’ll provide the offense another dynamic weapon in both the run and pass game.

Social media reacts to the Oklahoma Sooners’ 2024 signing class

The Oklahoma Sooners had a great day with the opening of the early signing period and here’s how social media reacted.

The Oklahoma Sooners had zero worries on the first day of the early signing period. They received national letters of intent from each of the 27 players who were committed to the program entering December.

While several big-time programs across the country were dealing with losses, it was all smiles in Norman as the program put the finishing touches on what Brent Venables called the best recruiting class in his first three cycles in Norman.

The signatures of five-star prospects [autotag]David Stone[/autotag] and [autotag]Taylor Tatum[/autotag] headlined the day, but the class as a whole will infuse a lot of talent into Norman.

With the Sooners heading to the SEC in 2024, it was imperative they improve their offensive and defensive lines. With blue-chip prospects on both sides of the ball, it’s fair to call 2024 a success.

As we revel in the Sooners’ success in the [autotag]2024 early signing period[/autotag], let’s check in to see how social media reacted.

Nation’s No. 1 running back in the class of 2024 officially signs with the Oklahoma Sooners

The Oklahoma Sooners add Taylor Tatum to the team after he officially signs his National Letter of Intent.

The [autotag]2024 early signing period[/autotag] is here, and the Oklahoma Sooners have received the signature from one of their most sought prospects. [autotag]Taylor Tatum[/autotag] is a five-star prospect and the nation’s top running back in the class of 2024.

Tatum could come in and immediately contribute to a running back room for Oklahoma that was up and down in 2023. He has a very similar playing style to former Sooners running back [autotag]Joe Mixon[/autotag].

He’s not as big as Mixon, though, listed at 5 feet, 11 inches and 205 pounds. He can help in the passing game as well as the running game. He’s also a dual sport athlete who is expected to play both football and baseball at Oklahoma.

Here is what Gabe Brooks, a national scouting analyst for 247Sports, had to say about Tatum:

Instinctive lane-finder. Plays with patience. Presses blocks to allow for holes to materialize. Also knows how to buy a couple more strides of time on perimeter runs to help blockers re-route defenders. Quick-footed in the hole. Regularly makes something out of nothing when penetration disrupts play in the backfield. – Brooks

4-star offensive lineman Eugene Brooks signs with the Oklahoma Sooners

Making his commitment official, four-star offensive lineman Eugene Brooks signs with the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Oklahoma Sooners have become well known for their player development along the offensive line. Led by Bill Bedenbaugh, Oklahoma has put a number of offensive linemen into the NFL in recent years.

Bedenbaugh has been effective in his recruiting efforts, helping the Sooners land a number of blue-chip prospects. In 2024, one of the more intriguing players is four-star Eugene Brooks. Brooks signed his national letter of intent with the Sooners.

Brooks, who hails from Chatsworth, California, could end up playing either guard or tackle for the Sooners. According to Greg Biggins at 247Sports, he’s been dominant on the camp circuit, earning several awards along the way.

He’s the No. 5 interior offensive lineman, according to 247Sports, and the No. 14 player in the state of California.

While the Sooners have relied on transfer portal additions in recent years, their 2024 recruiting class could reset the depth chart. Brooks has a chance to come in and make an impact in Year 1 with the departures of McKade Mettauer, Cayden Green and Savion Byrd at guard.

He’ll have a steep learning curve as all freshmen offensive linemen do, but as an early enrollee, will get a head start on preparing for his first year of college football in 2024.
