Here’s how the Cowboys can combat Jets defensive depth and rotations

The Jet like to rotate their defensive linemen throughout a game but the Cowboys can put a stop to it. | From @ReidDHanson

Like Dan Quinn’s unit in Dallas, Robert Saleh’s Jets defense runs frequent rotations of personnel on and off the field throughout the game. They lean on their line depth to keep players fresh but also to put specialists in optimal position to succeed. It gives the Jets an advantage over opposing offenses because they can roll deep into their roster with limited overall drop-off.

Dallas has a similarly dominant defense at their disposal. While schemes and personnel differ between the two, they share familiar traits in their overall depth and dominance. Dallas logged 10 players with 17 or more snaps in Week 1. So, it stands to reason, if anyone knows how to limit the effectiveness of a rotational line, it’s Dallas.

The Cowboys know firsthand the best way to stop a rotation is to prevent substitutions in between plays. Opponents have done it to Dallas occasionally over the years and it’s forced the Cowboys to keep tired personnel on the field for longer than they would have liked.

If offenses stay on the field and line up instead of huddling, they will prevent the defense from swapping in fresh players. If the Cowboys can catch New York with a mismatch of personnel, they could gain an advantage by sticking with it for an up-tempo drive.

With a veteran quarterback like Dak Prescott under center, they can easily make their play calls at the line of scrimmage. And at home, Prescott can clearly communicate from under center since crowd noise will be in his favor. Once they’re at the line they can use the play-clock to its fullest. The point is they will prevent the Jets from substituting.

In Week 1, eight Jets defensive linemen logged 20 or more snaps. And that number should jump to nine when Carl Lawson makes his way back into the lineup. Standout star tackle Quinnen Williams took the most snaps at 52, but everywhere else the line rotates early and often.

The Cowboys saw significant success playing out of 12 personnel against the Giants in Week 1.  Two-TE sets could be the key to success again in Week 2.

The Jets cycle their defensive line but don’t adjust much in the back-seven. Based on snap counts, they played 56 of their 69 plays in nickel. If the Cowboys can catch them in a mismatch with 12 or 13 personnel, they may want to stick with it, play hurry-up, and prevent the Jets from substituting.

It’s not something for every drive but can be a great way to move the ball against a defense that leans on its rotations.

The Cowboys’ Week 2 opponents may not present immense challenges offensively, but their defense is one that should keep them within arm’s reach of victory throughout the season. It’s hard not to appreciate and respect what Saleh has built in New York. Lost in the doom and gloom of Aaron Rodgers’ injury is the fact Saleh has a defensive juggernaut on his hands.

Mike McCarthy and the Dallas offense may need to play some fast-break offense to break the Jets’ press.

TV coverage maps, how to stream Cowboys-Jets, plus 10 top prop bets

If you’re in red, you get to move ahead. If you’re in blue, here’s what you’ll need to do. If you’re not in debt, here are some solid bets. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys are ready to roll for their home opener of the 2023 season. After taking over Gotham in Week 1 with a 40-0 blowout victory, the Cowboys will now host the other team from New York in the AFC’s Jets. Dallas’ victory last week was the franchise’s largest shutout victory ever and could be a sign of great things to come this season. The three other times Dallas has shut out a team by 35 or more points, they’ve gone to the Super Bowl. The two previous times that happened in Week 1, they won the Lombardi.

Now the club will take on the Aaron Rodgers-less Jets after the future HoF QB was lost four plays into their win over Buffalo. New York was able to pull out the victory though, which shows they are more than capable of pulling off what Dallas did in 2022 when they lost QB Dak Prescott for five games and went 4-1. Want to catch all of the action? Here’s how, along with our favorite bets for the contest.

Cowboys News: Sauce needs a bounce back vs Dallas? 2024 2-rd mock nets RB

CeeDee Lamb’s plans for a big statement, injury concerns for the Cowboys offense and how Dallas can avoid the upset. | From @cdburnett7

The Cowboys and Jets will square off Sunday at AT&T Stadium, but the matchup doesn’t have the same flare it did a week ago. With Aaron Rodgers’ season over, New York is trying to pick up the scraps after scraping by with a win in Week 1. For Dallas, it’s about avoiding an upset, and also getting some payback for an embarrassing loss in 2019.

Looking at the game in detail, the marquee matchup is wide receiver CeeDee Lamb versus one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks in Sauce Gardner. The Cowboys star is confident and detailed how he plans to make a statement in Week 2. Fellow Dallas receiver Michael Gallup had a quiet first week, but he’s primed for a bounce-back year after a full offseason.

Injuries are a concern for the Cowboys, not as much as the Jets, but there’s key pieces for Dallas on offense that might be out for the home opener. Updates on Brandin Cooks and Tyler Smith, the potential appearance of a former Cowboys kicker and quarterback Dak Prescott’s opinion on the grass vs. turf debate in the latest News and Notes.

Cowboys Final Injury Report concerning for offense ahead of Jets in Week 2

The Cowboys will have to work through some injury concerns when they square off with the Jets on Sunday. The final injury report is out. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys don’t have the level of injury the New York Jets are dealing with, but things aren’t exactly great ahead of the Week 2 clash. Nothing comes close to trumping Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles injury and the downgrade from him to third-year starter Zach Wilson, of course. But the club’s home opener is less than 48 hours away, but for the second straight week the offensive line became less healthy as the game got closer.

Zack Martin’s addition to the injury report starting Thursday makes 3/5th of the starting lineup to be listed along the OL and there’s also a new concern at wide receiver. Meanwhile the Jets know the worst is behind them and aside from Rodgers the prospects of the rest of the roster are good to play on Sunday. Here’s a look at the game designations for Tyler Smith, Brandin Cooks, Donovan Wilson and more as the teams have released their final practice reports of the week.

Play-action, edge control among Cowboys-Jets key battlegrounds on Sunday

A look at the philosophical and schematic factors that will determine the winner in the Cowboys-Jets tilt on Sunday afternoon. | From @ReidDHanson

One week into the 2023 regular season and the Dallas Cowboys find themselves on very different sides of the spectrum than their Week 2 opponent. After losing Aaron Rodgers for the season in Week 1, the vibe has changed in New York. Their excitement for the season has turned to determination and the ultra-talented Jets appear hellbent on proving they can win despite their loss at QB.

The Cowboys, on the other hand, are coming off the biggest blowout of the week. They’re riding high atop the power rankings and their biggest threat this week appears to be drinking their own Kool-Aid. Where both teams start resemble each other is in their overall talent on the field. Like Dallas, the Jets are supremely gifted on defense. They possess talent at all levels and have roster depth to back it up.

Led by Robert Salah, New York’s defense is essentially an even better version of the 49ers squad that bounced Dallas from the postseason two years in a row.

Coming from the San Francisco coaching tree, the resemblance is understandable for Salah’s team. He leans on Cover 2/4 often, spreading his linemen wide up front and leaning on his explosive LBs to fill in the gaps seemingly everywhere.

The ability of the Jets defense cannot be overstated and at the moment, appears to be the best Dallas will face this season. As such, it will require a patient gameplan and success in a few key matchups for the Cowboys to come out top.

The absence of Rodgers doesn’t suddenly make this game easy, and the Cowboys’ mental toughness will be put to the test as they welcome the Jets to their home opener in Arlington.

4 keys to Cowboys avoiding a Jets upset in Week 2

Dallas will need to maintain focus despite the assumption they should have an easy time of it against the Rodgers-less Jets. Here’s how. | From @cdpiglet

The 2023 Cowboys announced their intentions on Sunday night with an opening week beatdown of their division rival, the New York Giants. Dallas did their job at MetLife Stadium to a 40-0 tune and then settled in to watch their Week 2 opponent, the New York Jets and nemesis Aaron Rodgers.

The Jets appeared to be an incredible test for the Cowboys with their unbelievable defense and all-time outstanding QB. Four plays into their opener, the entire dynamic changed. A torn Achilles tendon ended Rodgers season, and Zack Wilson was back as the starter at QB.

Whatever the game plan was for Dallas to beat a Rodgers-led Jets team, it now shifts, and the ability for New York to upset the Cowboys becomes a much greater task. Here is how Dallas avoids a letdown in their home opener and remains undefeated after Week 2.

Key Lawrence among College Sports Wire’s top Big 12 performers from week 2

After a strong performance in the Sooners win over SMU, Oklahoma’s Key Lawrence was selected as College Sports Wire’s top Big 12 defensive back from week 2.

The Oklahoma Sooners are 2-0 on the season, led by a defense that’s allowing just 5.5 points per game and rank as a top-10 defense early on. The Sooners will face tougher competition as the season goes on, but the SMU Mustangs offense is a good one. Oklahoma held them to their lowest point total since the end of the 2017 season.

There were a number of key contributors to the strong defensive performance, including [autotag]Danny Stutsman[/autotag] and [autotag]Kip Lewis[/autotag] at linebacker. Another player who had a strong game was, safety [autotag]Key Lawrence[/autotag].

Lawrence was named one of College Sports Wire’s top Big 12 performers from the Sooners’ win in week 2.

It was actually the defense that helped lead the Sooners to a victory over SMU on Saturday. They held the Mustangs to just 11 points and that allowed a struggling offense to find their footing in the 4th quarterback. Lawrence was part of that unit that kept Preston Stone from lighting up the scoreboard. – Conn, College Sports Wire

Lawrence came up with a heads up play after Jaylan Knighton broke free for a big run in the fourth quarter. As the Mustangs were looking to cut into the Sooners 14-3 lead on Saturday, Knighton broke free down the left side and Key Lawrence tracked him down. Lawrence swatted the ball out, which Danny Stutsman recovered after Woodi Washington kept it from going out of bounds.

The Sooners have a deep safety group in 2023. The additions of [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] and [autotag]Reggie Pearson[/autotag] to [autotag]Billy Bowman[/autotag] and Key Lawrence have given them four players who can make plays. But all offseason as the media spoke of Bowen, Pearson, and Bowman all offseason, defensive coordinator [autotag]Ted Roof[/autotag] quickly reminded everyone of Key Lawrence.

On Saturday, Key Lawrence looked like the player who was making plays in the Iowa State game at the end of the 2021 season. He’s been a big part of Oklahoma’s defensive success to start the 2023 season.

His energy and aggressiveness give the Sooners another player who can impact the game in multiple ways. To be a good or even great defense, the Sooners need difference-makers at every level of the defense. At safety, the Sooners are chock-full of playmakers, and Lawrence stood out on Saturday in the win over SMU.

College Football Power Rankings: Longhorns, Fighting Irish make big jumps after week 2

The Texas Longhorns experienced the biggest jump of the week after their win over Alabama in this week’s College Football Power Rankings.

The 2023 college football season has already provided some fantastic games just a few weeks in. In week one, Florida State and LSU provided the entertainment in their top 10 matchup. In week two, Texas and Alabama took center stage.

Texas beat the Crimson Tide 34-24 in Tuscaloosa, giving Steve Sarkisian his biggest win since taking over as head coach in Austin, and perhaps in his career.

If the Texas hype hadn’t already reached the stratosphere, it’s jumping into hyperspace after their 10-point win over the Tide.

It sets up the potential for an undefeated collision course when the Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners make the I-35 trek to Dallas to meet in the Cotton Bowl in a few weeks.

They’ll each have challenges to navigate, but Texas’ win gave the Red River Rivalry a little more juice.

Here’s a look at the College Football Power Rankings after week 2.

Wisconsin Badgers: Lost to Washington State

Justin Harrington shows first sign of Sooners situational football improvement

Justin Harrington made a late game interception and everyone’s dream would be to try to return that for a touchdown. But instead he showed the ‘we’ not ‘me’ mentality.

Another week, another dominant defensive performance for the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners went against the high-powered offense of the [autotag]SMU Mustangs.[/autotag]

Through three quarters, the Sooners’ defense still hadn’t allowed a touchdown on the season. SMU’s top wide receiver, [autotag]Jordan Hudson[/autotag],  didn’t even have a catch despite being its big-play guy.

It wasn’t a perfect performance. It was more of the bend-but-don’t-break model. The Sooners gave up yards, but only 11 points. They also held the Mustangs to 6 of 20 on third- and fourth-down conversion attempts, giving the Sooners the eighth-ranked third down defense through two games. That was emphasized this offseason.

Justin Harrington told reporters after the game he is feeling more and more comfortable in his role.

“I feel like my teammates are as well,” Harrington said. “Having those repetitions with those plays and just going over them over and over again. Just stressing their plays and stressing our plays. What the stress of our calls are and what they’re trying to attack us on just from things we messed up on last year that we fixed up over the spring and fall camp.”

You could see that preparation on full display when the Mustangs tried to bring out the tricks, whether a fumblerooski type of play or a flea flicker. The Sooners’ defense wasn’t fooled and sniffed them out from the start.

But a play Harrington made late in the game isn’t getting talked about enough.

The Sooners were up, 28-11, and SMU was driving. Harrington picked off the pass and could have easily tried to take it to the house. That’s every kid’s dream, right? Also, a 35-11 win looks a lot better than a 28-11 win.

But Harrington didn’t do that.

Instead, he slid. Why? Because he knows it’s about the team and not about himself.

“It’s an instinct to just take off running but fumbles could happen, penalties could happen, and yeah we get the pick but say we get a holding or a blind-side block and that puts the offense in minus territory with their back against the wall,” Harrington said. “Then maybe we have to punt and then they get a chance to return or get back into plus territory. So, all of those things go through our minds, and we preach it and talk about situational football.”

That’s why so many are so high on Harrington and why the defense is showing signs of improvement.

How’d the Oklahoma Sooners fare in CBS Sports week 2 grades?

The Oklahoma Sooners earn a surprising grade from CBS Sports after a hard fought win over the SMU Mustangs.

The Oklahoma Sooners are fresh off an underwhelming performance in Week 2. The defense played well, holding a really good SMU Mustangs offense to 11 points.

The offensive line looked confused and struggled most of the day. The offense was lackluster. This resulted in only 28 points against a team most thought Oklahoma would have quite a bit of success.

Barrett Sallee of CBS Sports gave out his Week 2 grades for several teams, including Oklahoma. His grade might surprise some: He gave the Sooners a “B” for the day.

Oklahoma’s 28-11 win over SMU doesn’t exactly jump off the page, but the defense looked great against an extremely underrated Mustangs offense. The fact that it was a defensively driven game was actually a feature, not a bug. – Sallee, CBS Sports

Sallee hit the nail right on the head. Much is going to be made of the offense’s lack of success, but the defense was so impressive. I’m still not at the point where I think this will be a top 50 unit at the end of the year, but it is off to a great start and showing improvement.

It gave up the first touchdown after seven quarters, which is the longest streak since 1999, and the defense held SMU to its fewest points scored since 2017. Both of those notes should make Sooner fans very happy.
