QB controversy brewing in Aggieland? Jimbo Fisher reveals ongoing competition between Conner Weigman and Max Johnson

During the 2023 SEC Media Days, Jimbo Fisher noted that the quarterback competition between Conner Weigman and Max Johnson is much tighter than many of us expected.

Texas A&M Head Coach Jimbo Fisher opened the 2023 SEC Media Day in his usual chatty fashion, speaking with reporters more casually before taking the stage for the annual Q&A with various members of the college sports media.

Aside from the apparent play-calling dispute involving new Aggie’s offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, Fisher’s brief yet revealing comment regarding the quarterback competition between sophomore Conner Weigman and senior southpaw Max Johnson has re-opened the conversation on who will start under center during the 2023 season.

“They both had good springs. I’m very confident in both guys.”

First, nothing is set in stone when it comes to any starting postion under Jimbo Fisher, at least when you ask him about it in person. So yes, take this non-answer with a grain of salt. Still, when you break down both players’ 2022 seasons, Weigman’s end-of-season momentum and chemistry with the starting wide receiver core still places him in the lead, but as we all know, Max Johnson’s arm strength, accuracy, and proven experience with two full starting seasons at LSU is one of the many reasons this is still technically an ongoing competition.

Here are both players’ statistical performances in 2022:

  • Conner Weigman: 896 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and zero interceptions for a 132.3 passer rating in five games during the latter half of the 2022 season
  • Max Johnson: 517 passing yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions for a 135.7 passer rating in four games during the start of the 2022 season before a season-ending hand injury in the loss to Mississippi State.

To further add to the debate, senior wide receiver Ainias Smith state that both Weigman and Johnson have displayed leadership qualities within the locker room, stating,

“I expect greatness.”

Ainias Smith, McKinnley Jackson, and Fadil Diggs represented Texas A&M at the 2023 SEC media days in Nashville, and spoke on the expectations for the coming season.

2023 SEC media days are officially underway, and there was no shortage of Texas A&M representation on day one of the festivities.

Student-athletes Ainias Smith, McKinnley Jackson, and Fadil Diggs were among those in attendance at the Grand Hyatt in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Of course, they were joined by Aggie football head coach Jimbo Fisher, and with the Maroon and White entering a pivotal 2023 season following their 5-7 (2-6 SEC) campaign a year ago, there was no shortage of questions around the team’s mindset this season.

Smith highlighted the fact that he looked at every perspective possible when deciding whether or not to return to Aggieland this season, and he was confident that he made the right choice in playing for one more year. Like so many others in attendance, he was quick to honor the late great Terry Price when speaking to the media as well.

Jackson shed light on what brought him to Texas A&M in the first place while giving major praise to rising defensive star Walter Nolen, who he refers to aptly as a “unicorn” given what he’s able to accomplish on the field.

Diggs spoke at length about the advantage of playing in front of the passionate fan base that is the 12th Man, while also noting that he doesn’t pay attention to any of the critics and cynics that are speaking ad nauseam about the Aggies through the offseason.

Here is everything Smith, Jackson, and Diggs had to say during the 2023 SEC media days:

Everything Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher had to say at 2023 SEC media days

From the state of the roster, to Bobby Petrino, to the renewed rivalry with Texas, here is everything Jimbo Fisher had to say at 2023 SEC media days.

Of course, they were joined by Aggie football head coach Jimbo Fisher, and with the Maroon and White entering a pivotal 2023 season following their 5-7 (2-6 SEC) campaign a year ago, there was no shortage of questions heading Fisher’s way Monday afternoon.

From the team’s mindset heading into the fall season with a clean slate to the renewed rivalry with Texas once they join the SEC, there was plenty that Fisher had to say to both the media and on the main stage podium. Oh, and how could we forget the most predominant topic on everyone’s mind: whether it would be Fisher or newly anointed offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino calling the plays this season?

Spoiler alert: Fisher gave a classic answer when the question was thrown his way.

In addition to the aforementioned topics, Fisher was quick to pay tribute to the late great Aggie Terry Price, while also shedding light on the work the team has put in both on the gridiron, in the classroom, and within the team’s recent recruiting efforts.

Here is everything Jimbo Fisher had to say both to the media and at the main stage podium during the 2023 SEC media days:

SEC media days 2023 schedule and dates

The Gators will take the podium on Wednesday afternoon.

The 2023 edition of the Southeastern Conference’s annual media days event, held at the Nashville Grand Hyatt, kicked off on Monday with commissioner Greg Sankey’s address, which will be followed by coaches and select players from each of the 14 member schools as the week unfurls.

For the next four days, the focus will be on the three or four programs that are scheduled that day. Florida Gators fans can look forward to Wednesday when head coach Billy Napier joins offensive lineman Kingsley Eguakun, defensive back Jason Marshall Jr. and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall at the podium.

Previewing Day 1 of the 2023 SEC media days

Previewing Day 1 of the 2023 SEC media days

The 2023 SEC media days will get underway on Monday morning from the Nashville Grand Hyatt in Nashville, Tennessee.

Three teams will take center stage today in Nashville as the LSU Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies, and Missouri Tigers are set to be on the docket on Monday.

Each head coach has some interesting questions to answer entering the 2023 season.

LSU’s Brian Kelly will look to repeat as SEC West champions and has a ton of help back to do so. Star quarterback Jayden Daniels is back for his senior season and super sophomore linebacker Harold Perkin Jr. is back to cause havoc for opposing offenses. It will be interesting to see how coach Kelly and his player handle the pressure of being a possible favorite to make it to Atlanta in back-to-back seasons.

Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz is hovering on the hot-seat entering 2023. The Tigers are 17-19 under Drinkwitz in his three seasons as the head coach and will need to show serious signs of improvement if wants to retain his job in Columbia. The Tigers return six starters on offense and eight starters on defense, so the Tigers have some experience back, but taking care of business at home and in the non-conference will be critical for Mizzou in 2023.

Jimbo Fisher and the Texas A&M Aggies has had one of the most polarizing offseasons in the SEC. Fisher made the surprising hire of Bobby Petrino as his offense coordinator and that is sure to be the center of a ton of questions in Nashville. The Aggies have a ton of fire power returning on both offense and defense, but can the Aggies put it all together and make a run at an SEC West crown?

How to Watch: 2023 Texas A&M SEC Media Days event

Jimbo and company will be the SEC Media days in Nashville, Tennessee to answer any and all questions

It seems like yesterday that the Aggies were coming off a 5-7 season with no bowl game and losing the No.1 Linebacker for the second consecutive season. But it’s summertime now, and Jimbo has gone from everyone looking to find the best way to buy out this contract to possibly a top-10 recruiting class for 2024.

After an interesting transfer period where the Aggies dominated social media with the storyline that everything was falling apart in Bryan/College Station. However, with Bobby Petrino on board calling plays, a few big weeks of recruiting, and the release of the 2024 schedule, there will be plenty to talk about in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Grand Hyatt.

Representing Texas A&M in front of the media will be Head Coach Jimbo Fisher, wide receiver Ainias Smith, defensive end Fadil Diggs, and defensive tackle McKinney Jackson.

5 potential questions for Jimbo Fisher as Texas A&M heads into the 2023 SEC Media Days

Here are five potential questions Aggies Head Coach Jimbo Fisher will be asked during this week’s SEC Media Days (July 17-20)

The 2023 college football season is less than 50 days away. While Big 12 Media Days took place last week, it’s time for the SEC to take over the media landscape as all 14 Head Coaches in the conference head to Nashville, Tennessee, to preview the upcoming season.

At the same time, Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M are likely to take center stage once again after coming off of their disappointing 5-7 (2-6 SEC) 2022 campaign, mainly due to the tremendously high preseason expectations, including a No.6 AP ranking.

More than a year removed from the now memorable Jimbo Fisher vs. Nick Saban “War of Words” after the Alabama Head Coach accused Fisher of “buying” the Aggies top-ranked 2022 recruiting class at an event in Birmingham, Alabama, last May, Fisher’s sharp response just days later led to a media fervor that lasted all the way to last year’s 2022 SEC Media Days, resulting in Fisher’s first four questions about Nick Saban’s mere existent as a human being.

This year, Fisher will be joined by three veteran players, including wide receiver Ainias Smith, Defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson, and defensive end Fadil Diggs, who are all scheduled to speak to the media on Monday at 1:55 p.m., which will air on the SEC Network.

Ahead of what should be a highly interesting back and forth, here are five potential questions Jimbo Fisher will be asked on Monday.
