When they last met: Commanders and Cowboys

The last time the Cowboys and Commanders met was Ron Rivera’s last game in Washington.

“When they last met” is an ongoing series during the NFL season, recalling the preceding game between Washington and the next opponent on the Commanders’ schedule.

Dallas 38, Washington 10 – Week 18, January 7, 2024

Ron Rivera’s last game as Washington’s head coach illustrated so well how far his program had fallen.

In his last game, Rivera and the Commanders were thumped by the Cowboys 38-10 at the then-FedEx Field in Landover.

The Cowboys were clearly the superior team, gaining 31 first downs, while the Commanders could only generate 12.

How bad were the Commanders? Dallas had 440 total yards, while Washington could only manufacture 180.

Remember that this was a Commanders team and coaching staff that had been thoroughly embarrassed just a month earlier, on Thanksgiving Day 45-10, by the same Cowboys team that was actually eating Turkey on the sidelines and laughing at the Commanders.

In this season finale, Dak Prescott was not challenged, not being sacked, completing 31 of 36 passes for 279 yards and four touchdown passes. Meanwhile, Commanders quarterback Sam Howell was being sacked four times, took seven more quarterback hits, and was intercepted twice.

Washington had played the Cowboys twice in a month and lost 45-10 and 38-10. The result seriously resembled what you see when the high school varsity team plays another high school team. The disparity of talent and intensity resulted in a boring second-half blowout. This game, like the entire season, like the Ron Rivera era, couldn’t end soon enough.

Rivera’s program was in total shambles (no exaggeration), and the fan base was actually relieved when it was over, knowing the Josh Harris ownership group was going to make wholesale changes.

When they last met: Commanders vs. Bears

This was the beginning of the end of the 2023 season for the Commanders.

“When they last met” is an ongoing series during the NFL season, recalling the preceding game between Washington and the next opponent on the Commanders’ schedule.

Chicago 40, Washington 20 – Week 5, October 5, 2024

The Bears came into FedEx Field winless (0-4) to face the 2-2 Commanders. But when the game concluded, Washington was the loser.

Entering the game as a touchdown favorite, Washington, frankly, played like the game was going to be given to them. The Bears were the intense team. The Bears played with urgency and absolutely dominated the Commanders from the start.

The Bears totaled 199 yards in the first quarter, while the Commanders generated only 12 yards. The second quarter was even worse. The Bears ended the half with a 27-3 lead, 14 to 5 first downs, 307 yards to 84, 122 rushing yards to 13, and they averaged 6.8 yards each rushing attempt to 1.9 by the Commanders.

In the second half, Washington finally showed up, battling back to narrow the lead to 30-20, but the Bears recovered, scoring the game’s final ten points for the final 40-20 margin.

The Commanders’ defense permitted Bears quarterback Justin Fields to pass for 282 yards with four passing touchdowns and no interceptions. Khalil Herbert rushed for 76 yards, averaging 7.6 a carry, while DJ Moore looked like Jerry Rice against the Washington secondary, catching eight passes for a startling 230 yards, including three touchdowns.

Sam Howell finished 37 of 51 for 388 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. But he was sacked five times, and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy entirely abandoned the run, only getting Brian Robinson six carries for 10 yards.

The game marked the unofficial end of the Ron Rivera era (2020-23). The loss was so embarrassing and so revealing of Rivera’s not having the team ready to play that his tenure was sealed as finished. Sure enough, new owner Josh Harris saved Rivera the embarrassment of being fired in mid-season, firing him upon the season’s conclusion after a woeful 4-13 season.

When they last met: Commanders vs. Cardinals

What happened the last time the Commanders played the Cardinals? We look back at that meeting.

“When they last met” is an ongoing series during the NFL season, recalling the preceding game between Washington and the next opponent on the Commanders’ schedule.

Washington Commanders 20, Arizona Cardinals 16 – Week 1, Sep. 10, 2023

In a sloppy season opener at FedEx Field, the Commanders came from behind to defeat the Cardinals 20-16.

New starting quarterback Sam Howell ran for a touchdown and passed for another touchdown, and Joey Slye added two field goals for the Commanders.

Though no one was aware at the time, the game was a foreshadowing of what was to come in the 2023 season.  How so?

  1. Washington would trail at halftime.
  2. The Commanders would have three turnovers losing the turnover battle.
  3. Washington would give up six quarterback sacks on the day.
  4. The Commanders were so horrible it would be the last home win of the 2023 season.

Washington trailed 13-7 after Howell was sacked, fumbled and Cameron Thomas scooped up the fumble and only had to travel two yards for a Cardinals touchdown.

Trailing 16-10 after three quarters, Sam Howell concluded a 29-yard drive in 7 plays with his own 6-yard touchdown, putting the Commanders on top of the Cardinals 17-16.

Following another Cardinals fumble, the Commanders could only generate seven yards, but it was enough for Joey Slye’s 33-yard field goal and the final scoring margin of 20-16.

Brian Robinson Jr. led Washington rushing with 59 yards in 19 carries, while Howell completed 19 of 31 passes for 202 yards, a touchdown pass to Robinson and one interception, finishing with a passer rating of 77.6.

Curtis Samuel and Jahan Dotson both had five receptions for 54 and 40 yards, respectively, while Logan Thomas caught four receptions for 43 yards.

Defensively, Montez Sweat (1.5), Jonathan Allen (1.0), and Abdullah Anderson (0.5) all contributed a quarterback sack. Sweat, Allen and Daron Payne all totaled two tackles for a loss. Payne and Anderson both also recovered a Cardinals fumble.

When they last met: Commanders vs. Giants

Their last meeting was a weird game.

“When they last met” is an ongoing series during the NFL season, recalling the preceding game between Washington and the next opponent on the Commanders’ schedule.

NY Giants 31, Washington Commanders 19 – Week 11, Nov. 19, 2023

In what was one of the most frustrating games of the 2023 season, the Commanders were at home and yet lost to the New York Giants 31-19 at the then-FedEx Field.

The Giants came into the game a woeful 2-8, while Washington was 4-6, having just lost a heartbreaker the previous week in Seattle (29-26). How bad were the Giants? The oddsmakers had the Commanders a 9-point favorite!

In a game you could not have scripted more bizarrely, the Commanders lost the turnover margin 6-0. The Commanders defense sacked the Giants’ backup quarterback Tommy DeVito nine times, yet they still lost the game.

Adding to the strangeness, when DeVito did not have to pick himself off of the FedEx turf on his nine times sacked, he picked apart the Commanders’ defense, completing for 246 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions for a remarkable 137.7 passer rating.

For DeVito, it was feast or famine, no in between. He could be sacked or pick apart the defense. Though Washington had the ball 34:51 to 25:09, DeVito simply didn’t require much time. He completed four passes to Darius Slayton and Saquon Barkley for 82 and 57 yards, respectively.

On the other hand, Washington’s Sam Howell completed 31 of 45 for 256 yards, one touchdown but also three interceptions. Also, being sacked four times, Howell’s passer rating was only 62.8.  If this wasn’t enough, Chris Rodriguez, Logan Thomas, and Byron Pringle all had lost fumbles. Adding more salt to the wound, Isaiah Simmons intercepted a Howell pass, returning it 54 yards for a touchdown.

The Commanders never once led in the game, trailing in the first half by as much as 14-3. With 2:20 remaining in the game, Howell connected with Jahan Dotson from 8 yards, bringing the Commanders to within five points at 24-19.

However, when the Commanders regained possession at the last minute, Simmons intercepted Howell, returning it for a touchdown and sealing a 12-point Giants’ win over Washington 31-19.

The Commanders who contributed quarterback sacks toward the huge 9-sack day were: David Mayo (2.0), Jonathan Allen (1.5), KJ Henry (1.5), while Jamin Davis, Daron Payne, Benjamin St-Juste and Casey Toohill all collected one QB sack.

Commanders’ Jayden Daniels becomes No. 8

A new number for Jayden Daniels — but not a jersey number.

Prior to the start of training camp, Commanders’ long-time punter Tress Way offered up his No. 5 to rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

On Monday, Daniels became Washington’s No. 8. However, we are not talking about jersey number eight. No, on Monday, Daniels became the eighth quarterback to be named the opening-day starter for the eighth consecutive season.

That’s right. Did you realize Kirk Cousins is the last quarterback for the Washington franchise to start on consecutive opening days?

Cousins was the starter for three consecutive seasons (2015-17), and prior to that, Robert Griffin had been the starter for three consecutive seasons (2012-14).

Griffin and Alfred Morris led a potent ground attack in 2012. Griffin gained 815 yards on the ground and led the league in averaging 6.8 yards a carry. Morris gained a whopping 1,613 yards, which remains the single-season franchise record. It was also the last time Washington won ten games in a regular season.

But 2013 and 2014 were not winning seasons for Griffin and the Redskins. The last quarterback to lead Washington to a winning regular season record was Cousins. The Redskins were 9-7 in 2015 and 8-7-1 in 2016.

Following Griffin (2012) and Cousins (2015 & 2016), no Washington quarterback has led the team to a winning regular season record.

Here are the opening day named starters for the last eight Washington NFL seasons:

  • 2017 Kirk Cousins 7-9
  • 2018 Alex Smith 7-9
  • 2019 Case Keenum 3-13
  • 2020 Dwayne Haskins 7-9
  • 2021 Ryan Fitzpatrick 7-10
  • 2022 Carson Wentz 8-8-1
  • 2023 Sam Howell 4-13
  • 2024 Jayden Daniels ?-?
