Let’s begin with the players available to play.

Do the Boston Celtics need to give Jaylen Brown the ball more late?

“I guess I’ve got to demand the ball a little bit more,” said Brown of the Celtics loss in Game 4.

After finding himself cut out of the action on the final play of another game where a decisive act might have been the difference between the win the Boston Celtics were looking for and the loss they ended up getting in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series with the Philadelphia 76ers, star forward Jaylen Brown opened up on how the game ended.

“I guess I’ve got to demand the ball a little bit more,” suggested the Georgia native postgame. “I thought good things happened when I had it in my hands, but I thought our offense … was ok.”

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast Bobby Manning and Josue Pavon discuss Brown’s lack of involvement after Boston’s 116-115 overtime loss in Game 4 of the East semis in a recent short embedded below.

Boston’s Joe Mazzulla admits he ‘should have called’ a timeout at the end of Game 4

“At the end of overtime, hindsight’s 20/20, I should have called it to help us get a two-for-one or get a couple more possessions,” he explained.

The debate over whether Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla should have called a timeout at the end of Game 4 vs. the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday is a contentious one, but the man at the center of it admitted that he ought to have called a timeout during media availability on Monday.

“I trust our guys to make the right play,” said Mazzulla to the press via CLNS Media. “Preventing the team from getting matchups off of the floor, preventing a team from getting their defense organized and hindsight’s always 20/20. So it sounds good to say, ‘Yes, we should have done this’, but we prepared all year to take advantage of those situations. More times than not, it worked out for us.”

“I thought at the end of regulation it worked out, ” he added. “We got the last shot, which is what you want. You don’t want to give them an opportunity.”

“At the end of overtime, hindsight’s 20/20, I should have called it to help us get a two-for-one or get a couple more possessions,” he explained.

“And so with 14 seconds left down one, you want to get as many chances as you can, so (we’ll) definitely learn from that.”

PHOTOS – Boston at Philadelphia: Celtics fall 116-115 in OT as 76ers tie series up at 2-2

Let’s take a look at some of the best plays captured in images from the Celtics’ Game 4 vs. the 76ers in the second round of the ’23 playoffs.

The hardest series lead to take in the NBA postseason is a so-called “commanding” 3-1 lead, and in Game 4 of the Boston Celtics’ second-round series with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Sixers came out like a team who knows all too well what will be the likely outcome of falling behind one game to three, winning the critical contest 116-115 in overtime.

Solid outings by Jayson Tatum (24 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 blocks), Jaylen Brown (23 points, 5 assists), Marcus Smart (21 points, 7 assists), and Malcolm Brogdon (19 points, 5 boards, 8 assists) almost won the day, but the Sixers leveraged desperation and the home crowd to tie the series up at 2-2.

Let’s take a look at some of the best plays captured in images from the Celtics’ Game 4 vs. the 76ers in the second round of the ’23 playoffs.

Celtics can’t complete comeback, fall in epic Game 4 OT thriller to Sixers

The Celtics fell to the 76ers 116-115 in a Game 4 overtime classic Sunday afternoon despite a heroic comeback effort.

The Boston Celtics fell to the Philadelphia 76ers Sunday afternoon 116-115 after a strong attempt at a comeback. Boston trailed by as many as 16 late in the third in a game where the Celtics’ defense couldn’t keep up with explosive performances from James Harden and Joel Embiid. Tighter defense saw Boston erase Philly’s lead, but the Celtics couldn’t secure the win.

Harden had 42 points to go with 8 rebounds and 9 assists, including a shot to force overtime and a bigger one to ice the game for Philly. Embiid was also very good, contributing 34 points and 13 boards. For Boston, it was Al Horford’s defense and Jayson Tatum’s offense that spurred the would-be comeback, but the Sixers were just a bit better.

The Eastern Conference Semifinals are now knotted at two games apiece, with Game 5 slotted for Tuesday night in Boston. For now, here’s what you missed from the Celtics’ Game 4 overtime loss to the 76ers.

‘The reality is that I am an elite shooter,’ admits Celtics’ Al Horford

The Boston vet forward was indeed irked by a reporter’s doubtful laugh in a recent scrum.

When someone laughed in response to Boston Celtics big man Al Horford referring to himself as an elite shooter in a recent post-shootaround interview, Horford seemed irked.

It is not be clear whether Horford was joking with his original statement or with his reaction to the laughter.

What is clear: The Florida alumnus is indeed an elite shooter on the 3-ball. Horford had the second-highest 3-point rate (44.6%) in the regular season.

“I just thought it was funny,” said Horford to the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach. “It got kind of carried away. It really has carried a lot. I’m hearing from a lot of people I haven’t heard from in a while sending me things about it. It is what it is.”

Asked if he was bothered by the laugh, the Dominican forward nearly wriggled out of a direct answer before sliding it in at the last moment.

“I mean, we’re just trying to keep it light, man. … I’m excited for this opportunity that we have. And, yeah. (T)he reality is that I am (an elite shooter), said Horford. “So, that’s kind of that.”

Given the exchange seemed to spark a 5-of-7 shooting night for the Boston forward in Game 3, we hope Horford finds more perceived slights for every game of the 2023 postseason.

Sixers’ Doc Rivers weighs in on Joe Mazzulla’s coaching of the Boston Celtics in the playoffs

“He’s doing a fantastic job,” said the former Celtics coach of the current one.

Doc Rivers knows a thing or two about the pressures of coaching a playoff team for the first time, as well as the high expectations of any coach at the helm of the Boston Celtics in the postseason.

The Philadelphia 76ers head coach weighed in on his opponent’s head coach, Joe Mazzulla, with that experience in mind in a recent conversation with ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

“Joe has far more pressure than I did my first year in the playoffs,” explained Rivers of his first foray into the league’s 16-game season with the Orlando Magic in 2002.

“He’s doing a fantastic job,” added the 76ers coach. “He’s taking a team that went to the finals last year.”

“He’s going to be the guy, just like me and just like all of us coaches, that you look at when anything goes wrong,” suggested Rivers. “And Joe’s never experienced that, but that’s just the way it is.”

“It’s part of our jobs. One thing I know about Joe, he knew that when he signed on. I guarantee it.”
