Who is the latest Heisman Trophy winner?
The Heisman finalists were in New York City for the big announcement on Dec. 9
Oregon Ducks quarterback has been named as one of four finalists for the Heisman Trophy in 2023.
On Saturday, December 9th, the winner of the 2023 Heisman Trophy will be announced from the Lincoln Center in New York City. On Monday afternoon, Oregon Ducks QB Bo Nix was announced as a finalist for the prestigious award.
He is the fourth Oregon Duck to be named a Heisman finalist β the other three being Joey Harrington in 2001, LaMichael James in 2010, and Marcus Mariota, who won the award in 2014.

At the beginning of the 2023 season, Nix’s name was thrown into the Heisman conversation, but he wasn’t seen as one of the leading candidates early in the season. But after weeks of consistency and efficiency leading the Ducks offense, Nix climbed toward the top of the Heisman rankings. Through 13 games of the season, Nix is 336 for 435 (77.6) passing the ball, he’s thrown for 4145 yards and has scored 46 total touchdowns.
The other finalists for the award are LSU QB Jayden Daniels, Washington QB Michael Penix Jr., and Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. Going into championship week Nix was the favorite, but after Oregon’s heartbreaking loss to Washington in the Pac-12 title game, Daniels replaced Nix as the heavy favorite.
Nix played two seasons as a Duck, after playing three seasons at Auburn. And in those two years, Nix has been nothing short of spectacular. In his Oregon career, Nix has completed 630 of 844 passes (74.6%), thrown for 7738 yards, rushed for 738, and scored 90 total touchdowns.
Nix will run out of eligibility after this season, and will likely enter the NFL Draft in April. However, Dan Lanning has said that Nix will play in the Fiesta Bowl against the Liberty Flames.

Bo Nix’s consistency might win out over having a “Heisman Moment” when it comes to the most prestigious award in college football.
The picture of who’s in the running to win the Heisman Trophy is becoming more clear as the college football season heads into November. Oregon quarterback Bo Nix has made himself a legitimate contender after the Ducks’ 35-6 road win over No. 13 Utah.
Voters usually look for that one “Heisman Moment” for the eventual winner, this may be the year where that moment doesn’t come, but instead, consistency over the entire regular season wins out and becomes that moment unto itself.
And while Nix still has time to generate that moment, his consistency hasn’t been matched by other so-called contenders. He hasn’t had any games where he has thrown for under 245 yards and two touchdowns. Oregon still has contests with USC, Oregon State, and possibly Washington once again.
It always helps to have your coach in your corner and Nix definitely has Dan Lanning as a pretty good spokesman.
“Iβm going to say it again, Bo Nix is the best quarterback in the nation just to be really clear. I donβt think thereβs any doubt about it,” the Oregon second-year coach said. “Itβs not just the plays he makes on the field … I think a lot of people talk about chasing stats and all these things, this guy just plays consistently. He gets us in the right calls, he comes to the sideline and helps us through adjustments. He tells us what he sees. Heβs an unbelievable person. When you have a good team like we have, and we have a quarterback like we have, thatβs a special recipe for success.”
Perhaps more important is to have your fellow teammates have your back and sing your praises. Center Jackson Powers-Johnson says Nix is just one of those special players.
“He’s great. I went up to him and gave him a hug and said ‘thank you’,” Powers-Johnson said. “We (the offensive line) do our part to make the offense go, but I’m going to give all the credit to Bo. He’s an amazing quarterback, an amazing person and an amazing leader. Hopefully there’s more media talk for Heisman because he deserves it.”
Like a good player and overall person, Nix is downplaying the Heisman talk and for him, it’s all about the team.
“I think that’s something that comes with playing really good team football and so my ultimate goal is to do whatever I can to win games. The guys in the locker room know that I want to win a championship,” Nix said. “We’re gonna do everything we can to go back to work on Monday to do that because we got it right in front of us. We can really feel it. That’s all we want to take care of. So all of this really is just gonna be chattering and talking noise, and we got to make sure that we don’t get distracted by it, myself included, and I’m just gonna go to work to win games.”
Oregon has done its share of winning games, going 7-1 overall and California is next on the schedule where Nix might have that Heisman moment. More likely, however, he’ll complete 75 percent of his passes, throw for 285 yards and three or four touchdowns.

Series History between the Washington and Oregon features hate, spite, and dominance on both sides.
While Week 5 vs. the Stanford Cardinal was absolutely billed as a rivalry game, this one’s different.
It’s different for a couple of reasons. It’s a top-ten matchup, Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. are both candidates for the Heisman Trophy, and the Ducks lost to the Huskies at home last year, which ended their College Football Playoff chances.
But mostly, it’s different because these teams just hate each other.

The annual matchup between the Ducks and the Huskies has been around since 1900 β when the Ducks beat the Huskies 43-0 β but the most significant origin of the rivalry came in 1948.
At the end of the 1948 season, Oregon and Cal were undefeated in conference play (Pacific Coast Conference). Oregon was in favor of a conference championship, but Cal elected to not play an extra game. Instead, each of the 10 schools in the PCC would vote on the conference’s champion β and Rose Bowl representative. Going in, Oregon was the presumable winner, but Washington reportedly convinced Montana β a PCC member at the time β to vote for the Golden Bears instead of the Ducks, which sent Cal to the Rose Bowl.
The most famous moment of the Oregon-Washington rivalry came in 1994 when Kenny Wheaton, a Ducks’ DB, picked the ball off from Huskies QB, Damon Huard at the three-yard line and took the ball back 97 yards for a score in the waning moments of the game. “The Pick” as it came to be known, was the Ducks’ dagger in a game that snapped a five-year Washington win streak, and it also marked a major turning point for the Oregon football program as a whole.

Including that 1900 matchup, the Ducks and the Huskies have played 114 times. Oregon has won 48 of those games while Washington has won 61, with 5 ties in there as well. In more recent history though, Oregon has been the favorite. In the 21st century, the Ducks have been victorious in 16 of 21 matchups β with a 12-game winning streak from 2004-15. Before that run, however, Washington was rarely tested, winning 61 of the first 93 matchups between the two.
While this rivalry is full of history, the 115th matchup between these two teams will likely be the most anticipated and most important Oregon-Washington game ever. Both teams are in the top ten of the AP Poll for the first time ever in a head-to-head matchup, and both are legitimate College Football Playoff candidates. Saturday should be a fun one, and also one for the history books.

CollegeWire’s Pac-12 writers gathered together to discuss the final Pac-12 football season and who will win the Heisman.
After this season, the five CollegeWire writers who cover Pac-12 sports and our respective teams will no longer be able to get together and discuss how the Conference of Champions is going. Oregon and USC are moving to the Big Ten and Colorado is going back to some old stomping grounds in the Big XII.
So to celebrate, or more like, commiserate, we got together to talk about how the 2023 Pac-12 season will go. In separate articles, we went over each schedule (USC, Oregon, Colorado) and picked the winner of each game.
We also discussed who is going to win the Heisman Trophy and which two teams will meet up in Vegas and win the very last Pac-12 football title. It’s hard to believe that is the case, but here we are.
History isn’t in Caleb Williams’ favor, but the odds are.
History doesn’t like USC quarterback Caleb Williams’ chances to repeat as Heisman Trophy winner in 2023, but the betting odds sure do.
Williams’ +475 odds at Caesars Sportsbook are the best of any player. That despite just one repeat winner in the award’s history and none since Archie Griffin in 1975. Bryce Young had his repeat bid derailed by injuries this season, and now Williams is next in line to attempt the almost impossible.
On the heels of a season where the four finalists for the award were all quarterbacks, Williams’ odds are followed by nothing but more players at his position.
North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye has the second best odds, followed by Florida State’s Jordan Travis, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon’s Bo Nix, all at odds of 10-1 or longer.
The first non-quarterback doesn’t show up until Michigan running back Blake Corum at +3500. Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. is a couple spots later at +4500 odds.
