2023 LSU Tigers Snapshot Profile: No. 16 Quad Wilson

Quad Wilson’s biggest moment in 2022 came when he took an interception 99 yards for a touchdown in the Citrus Bowl against Purdue.

Going into the 2023 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each player listed on the Tigers’ roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Brian Kelly this season.

Depth Chart Overview

Wilson spent two seasons (but only one year for eligibility purposes due to the spring 2021 FCS season) at McNeese State, where he saw sporadic action on defense. He only saw 57 total snaps with the Cowboys, with 44 of them coming in the fall.

He played under his father at McNeese and followed him when he resigned to rejoin LSU’s staff as an assistant.

He appeared in two games last year, blowout wins over New Mexico and Purdue in the Citrus Bowl. His biggest moment came in the latter, when he took a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Boilermakers.

Wilson enters 2023 likely buried on the depth chart once again in a talented secondary, but he will likely see some reserve action while helping on the scout team.

2023 LSU Tigers Snapshot Profile: No. 16 George Hamsley

George Hamsley, who turned down several scholarship offers to walk on at LSU, didn’t appear in any games as a true freshman in 2022.

We round out the quarterback room with another non-scholarship player in redshirt freshman [autotag]George Hamsley[/autotag]. A preferred walk-on from Memphis, Hamsely made no appearances during his first season with the Tigers but played a role on the scout team. He’s likely looking at a similar role this fall.

Hamsley was a largely unheralded prospect coming out of Memphis University School in Tennessee. A two-sport athlete who also excelled as a right-handed pitcher in baseball, he was unrated on the 247Sports Composite and ultimately chose to join Kelly’s team as a preferred walk-on despite having several offers.

He didn’t appear in any games in 2022, serving in a scout team role, and he’ll likely occupy that role once again.

Depth Chart Overview

Ryan was the second-highest-rated recruit in LSU’s 2021 recruiting class coming out of high school, but he had a minimal impact as a true freshman due to injuries. In the four games he appeared in, he totaled just six tackles and two pass deflections.

He saw a much bigger role this past fall, appearing in all 14 games with one start against Ole Miss, in which he totaled a career-high five tackles. He finished the year with 23, forcing two fumbles and recovering two as well.

Ryan can play nickel or safety, but his easiest path to the field is likely at the former spot. He’ll compete with Syracuse transfer [autotag]Duce Chestnut[/autotag] for that starting job this fall.

It’s no secret that LSU hit the transfer portal hard to replace losses on defense. The defensive line was one of the most affected groups, and we’re looking at one of the most impactful additions in [autotag]Bradyn Swinson[/autotag], who was a rotational edge rusher in three years at Oregon.

Depth Chart Overview

Despite his big frame and athleticism, Swinson was a bit overlooked out of high school and ranked outside the top 500 nationally. Still, he signed with Oregon, and following seven appearances during the COVID season in 2020, he had his most productive season in 2021.

He played in 11 games, making his first and only start, and he earned all three sacks in his career that campaign. He also had a career-high four tackles for loss.

Swinson played in 12 games in 2022, but his role diminished as he totaled just eight tackles. He entered the transfer portal looking for a fresh start on an LSU team that has to replace [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag], though Texas transfer [autotag]Ovie Oghoufo[/autotag] seems like the safer pick to win that starting JACK spot.

Depth Chart Overview

A top 100 prospect out of high school and the son of former SEC offensive coordinator and current Chargers quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier, the younger Nussmeier signed with LSU out of high school and saw action in four games as a true freshman, sitting out what would have been a likely bowl game start to preserve his redshirt.

He competed with [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] last fall for the starting spot, which Daniels ultimately won. Nussmeier made appearances in seven games, impressing in second-half action of the SEC Championship against Georgia and the Citrus Bowl against Purdue.

Kelly has reiterated that Daniels is the starter, but the team seems to have confidence in Nussmeier, who will likely have at least some role on the 2023 team.

He saw a much bigger role as a redshirt freshman last fall, appearing in 13 games and making five starts. He had minimal production, making 20 tackles while not breaking up or intercepting any passes.
