A look at all the teams in LSU’s side of the College World Series bracket

Here’s a rundown on the teams LSU could face in Omaha this week.

LSU’s heading to Omaha.

The Tigers are back in the College World Series for the first time since 2017 and will open against Tennessee on Saturday night. The Vols and LSU will be joined on their side of the bracket by Wake Forest and Stanford.

Until the final, it’s an eight-team field and a double-elimination tournament. It follows the same structure as a regional, just twice the size. The two teams that emerge from the tournament then play a best-of-three final.

The final is scheduled for June 24-26.

Before play gets underway, here’s a look at the other teams in LSU’s bracket.

Did ‘Stanford twilight’ cost Texas a trip to the College World Series?

There’s a reasonable explanation for the brutal end to Texas’ baseball season.

Stanford is heading back to the College World Series for the third consecutive season after defeating the Texas Longhorns on Monday night in the most dramatic way possible — walking off with two outs in the ninth inning for a 7-6 victory.

And it’s worth wondering if the exact same game, played at the exact same location at any other time of day would’ve produced the same outcome.

Because Stanford didn’t walk off on a memorable home run or a screaming line drive. The Cardinal won on a pop up that the Longhorns’ outfielders simply could not track through the shine of the stadium’s lights against the sky.

This actually not an uncommon phenomenon for Cardinal baseball. The mix of late dusk plus the strong lights at the stadium have caused many teams to struggle tracking pop-ups .There’s even a name for it: Stanford twilight.

And plenty of baseball fans think it’s the reason why the Cardinal, and not the Longhorns, are headed to Omaha.

LSU to host an Omaha sendoff for baseball team on Wednesday

Fans can see the Tigers off to the College World Series at 9 a.m. CT on Wednesday.

Fans will have the opportunity to see the LSU Tigers off to the College World Series in Omaha on Wednesday morning.

As coach Jay Johnson’s team prepares for its first trip to the CWS since 2017, the school will host a sendoff for the Tigers. The sendoff is set for 9 a.m. CT and will be held near Gate 1, according to an LSU release.

Fans coming to campus for the sendoff will be permitted to park in the Hall of Fame lot, which is on the third base side of the stadium.

LSU clinched its spot in Omaha with a two-game sweep over Kentucky in the Baton Rouge Super Regional. They’ll take on Tennessee, which beat super regional host Southern Mississippi in three games, in the opener on Saturday night at 6 p.m. CT.

The Tigers are making their 19th overall appearance in Omaha and are looking to win their seventh national title (and the first since 2009).

LSU to face Tennessee in College World Series opener

It will be an all-SEC clash to kick things off in Omaha.

After a delay pushed Game 3 of the Hattiesburg Super Regional late into the night on Monday, LSU finally learned who it will face in its first game at the College World Series in Omaha.

Tennessee emerged victorious over host Southern Mississippi, setting up an all-SEC clash between the Tigers and the Volunteers. That game will take place on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.

The Vols dropped Game 1 against the Golden Eagles, which began on Saturday but had to continue on Sunday due to a weather-related postponement. Tennessee trailed 4-0 early in Game 2 but ultimately won 8-4.

Monday night’s decisive Game 3 was all Volunteers as they shut out USM in what became the final game of coach Scott Berry’s career.

LSU and Tennessee played a two-game series in Baton Rouge earlier this season with the Tigers taking that matchup two games to one.

Day, time and TV info set for LSU’s opening game at the College World Series

We know everything about LSU’s CWS opener, aside from who the Tigers’ opponent will be.

We still don’t know who the Tigers will play in their first game at the College World Series in Omaha next weekend, but we now know when that game will be played.

The LSU baseball team will begin its CWS run on Saturday against either Tennessee or Southern Miss at 6 p.m. CT, the NCAA announced. The game will be televised on ESPN.

We’ll have to wait until late on Monday night to learn who the Tigers will play in that one. The Volunteers and Golden Eagles have had to deal with multiple weather delays this weekend, and Game 3 of the Hattiesburg Super Regional is set to begin at 9:06 p.m. CT on Monday night after yet another.

In addition to the victor of that super regional, LSU will be joined in its half of the bracket by No. 1 overall seed Wake Forest and the winner of Game 3 of the Stanford Regional between the Cardinal and Texas.

The Tigers advanced to Omaha with a two-game, 22-run sweep of the Kentucky Wildcats over the weekend in the Baton Rouge Super Regional.

LSU coach Jay Johnson on what Tigers trip to Omaha means to him

Johnson is heading to his third College World Series as a head coach and the first with the Tigers.

With an 8-3 win over the Kentucky Wildcats in Game 2 of the Baton Rouge Super Regional on Sunday night, LSU clinched a spot at the College World Series in Omaha for the first time since 2017.

Despite the recent drought, this is an LSU program that has become accustomed to making the pilgrimage to Omaha. This will be the 19th overall trip the Tigers have made, but for coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag], it will be just his third and the first he’s made with LSU.

While the head coach at Arizona, Johnson led the Wildcats to the College World Series final in his first season in 2016, coming up short against tournament Cinderella Coastal Carolina in three games after taking Game 1.

The second trip came in 2021, and it was much less fortuitous for Johnson and the ‘Cats, who exited with an 0-2 record. Johnson is eager to have another shot at a national title.

“It means a lot,” he said, according to On3’s Steve Samra. “It started right after kind of the heartbreak of losing in the College World Series. I mean, the opening game in 2021, we had the lead against Kumar Rocker and Vanderbilt late, and we played great that night. That was a tough loss in extra innings, and then got eliminated by Stanford. Then they approached me and said, ‘What do you think about this?’ Probably wouldn’t have gone anywhere else. … Made this the place. I thought, ‘Wow. What a once in a lifetime, once in a career opportunity, and dream come true.’

“To be a part of this. … I mean, I grew up — I’m 12 years old, I had an LSU baseball hat, in Northern California. Watching the purple jerseys run around Omaha all the time. So to get to coach this team in the College World Series is, I’d have a hard time putting that into words, but it’s pretty special.”

LSU is looking for its first national title since 2009, and now Johnson has a chance to win a national championship with one of the most talented teams in program history.
