Golden State Warriors in danger of failing new Bleacher Report midseason assessment

There’s still time to right the ship with Draymond Green returning to the fold and the possibility of trades to shake up a moribund roster construction to get a better grade.

Generally speaking, by the midpoint of a semester, you can have a pretty solid idea of the grade you are going to get for a class.

You might be able to hit the books, maybe even hire a tutor to add to your arsenal aimed at earning the best possible grade you can get for the semester. But the potential range is much narrower than it was at the start of the semester.

That is where the Golden State Warriors find themselves in a recent midseason assessment by Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey. At more or less the midpoint of the NBA’s 2023-24 season, the Dubs have not found the success they have grown accustomed to over the years on either end of the court.

There’s still time to right the ship with Draymond Green returning to the fold and the possibility of trades to shake up a moribund roster construction to get a better grade. But as things stand now, Golden State is in real danger of a failing grade.

Could the Indiana Pacers make sense as a trade partner for Andrew Wiggins?

Rival clubs are reportedly expecting Indiana to have interest.

We have heard how little trade value Golden State Warriors wing Andrew Wiggins has on the trade market.

Given his career-low counting stats and not-small contract, there probably is some truth in the assertions that the market is tepid for Maple Jordan with the Feb. 8 deadline weeks away.

But it is not ice-cold based on what we are hearing from Substack’s Marc Stein, who writes that the Indiana Pacers’ “well-known interest in (OG) Anunoby has also led some rival teams to project the Pacers as a potential landing spot for Golden State’s Andrew Wiggins.”

“Wiggins is seen by some observers as the most likely Warrior to be traded in the wake of Golden State’s 18-21 start,” adds Stein.

“He’s in the first season of a four-year, $109 million deal, which is generally regarded as a quite reasonable contract in today’s NBA marketplace. The challenge for the Warriors has been creating a market for him after Wiggins’ downturn in production over the past season and a half,” he adds.

“Wiggins has started three games this month after moving to a reserve role for 11 games but is shooting a career-worst 29.5% from 3-point range.”

Could a change of scenery help his game, perhaps?

Keep an eye out for the Pacers — and perhaps also the Toronto Raptors and Pascal Siakam, per some recent assessments.

Should Golden State trade for Pascal Siakam?

If they did, what would it look like?

The Golden State Warriors may be about to make a major trade.

If that is the plan, could it be for star Toronto Raptors big man Pascal Siakam? With the 2024 NBA trade deadline now less than a month away, one of the worst-kept secrets in the league right now is that the Dubs are down to move pretty much anyone not named Stephen Curry.

Is there a world where the Raptors could be convinced of the potential of Canadian wing Andrew Wiggins playing for a club in his native country? And if they were amenable to such a trade, how would Siakam fit into how the Warriors play? And what about the fact he is in the final season of his current contract? Would that be a problem, or exactly what Golden State needs in terms of cap flexibility?

The folks behind the “Swish Central” podcast recently explored what a trade for Toronto’s Siakam might look like for the Warriors.

Anonymous GM: ‘Not a lot of value for (Andrew) Wiggins right now’

Is his trade value at an all-time low?

If the Golden State Warriors hope to entice a team to make a deal with them using the contract of veteran wing Andrew Wiggins, they might not find it such an easy thing to pull off based on what we are hearing from Andscape’s Marc J. Spears.

Per the Hall of Fame NBA reporter, Golden State might not be all that excited by the offers they are getting for the Canadian wing.

“Wiggins, I was told by a GM, there’s not a lot of value for Wiggins right now,” said Spears on a recent episode of ESPN’s “NBA Today” (h/t Clutch Points’s Jackson Stone), suggesting that “the Warriors desperately need to make a trade.”

Then again, this is the time of trade season when anonymous leaks like this are unleashed in the hopes of driving down the ask of a given trade target, so take the critique of Maple Jordan’s trade value with a grain of salt.

Currently on a four-year, $109 million extension that could lead to him exercising a player option for the 2026-27 season, the 28-year-old Wiggins is less than two seasons from being one of the best players on a champion club, so we are a bit skeptical the market is that bad.

But with the Dubs motivated to try to get better — and if possible, for less money — any deal bringing in real value for Golden State will not likely be a cheap one if it includes Wiggins’ contract given how little leverage the Dubs have in their current situation.

Warriors fall three places in Bleacher Report’s new power rankings

“Trading either Draymond or Klay Thompson has felt unfathomable for most of the last couple of years, but there’s a real argument they’re no longer maximizing Curry’s chances,” writes B/R.

The Golden State Warriors are in “uncharted territory” compared to recent years in the latest edition of Bleacher Report’s weekly NBA power rankings. That territory would be the latter third of the teams in the league after falling three places from Nos. 19 to 22 since the last iteration of the weekly rankings.

Per Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey, beyond “being three games below .500 and posting an underwater point differential,” the Dubs are “still without recently unsuspended Draymond Green and getting unprecedented sound bites from the typically even-keeled Stephen Curry,” who sounds as ready as some sections of the fan base to blow up this version of the Warriors.

Can you blame him after what he has done for the ball club vs. how the team looks of late? “After a decade at or near the top of the league, six Finals appearances and four championships, are we finally witnessing this Warriors era?” asks the B/R analyst.

“Trading either Draymond or Klay Thompson has felt unfathomable for most of the last couple of years, but there’s a real argument they’re no longer maximizing Curry’s chances to sneak one more title onto the resume. This season, Golden State is minus-2.5 points per 100 possessions when the legendary trio of Curry, Green and Thompson is on the floor,” he closes.

Two-timetable rosters do not tend to work out — just ask the Boston Celtics how it went having Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward playing with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum — so it’s clearly time to pick a direction for the Warriors, and the sinking power rankings are just one of many signs that’s true.

What are the Golden State Warriors’ options at the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline?

When you have a generational player like Steph Curry on your roster, it is criminal negligence to not at least try to improve the team for another title run. But is it already too late?

With the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline less than a month away, the Golden State Warriors are finding their ball club mentioned in a number of trade rumors. They are the subject of much speculation involving Moses Moody, Jonathan Kuminga and even Draymond Green.

And at least part of the trade rumor furor enveloping the Dubs is due to the effects Green’s suspension had on the club in (and to a lesser extent injury luck with players like Chris Paul). When you have a generational player like Steph Curry on your roster, it is criminal negligence to not try to improve the team for another title run. But is it already too late?

The host of the “Locked On Warriors” podcast Cyrus Saatsaz broke down pretty much every angle of the Warriors’ 2024 trade deadline.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith thinks Draymond Green’s career is on the line

The ESPN analyst believes that another such incident might be the death knell for Green as a high-level NBA player.

Is Golden State Warriors big man Draymond Green‘s career on the line?

At least one prominent NBA analyst seems to think it is after Green returns to the league following a lengthy suspension due to his on-court antics. Speaking on a recent episode of ESPN’s popular “First Take” show, senior analyst Stephen A. Smith let it be known he sees Green’s career on life support after the recent events and suspension.

Smith understandably doubts the antics will subside entirely given how much intensity figures in Green’s game, but he also acknowledges that such a suspension might be the wake-up call the Warriors forward needed.

The ESPN analyst believes another such incident might be the death knell for Green as a high-level NBA player. Is he right? Or is he simply concern-trolling for clicks?
