PHOTOS – Celtics at Knicks: Boston’s reserves fall to New York’s starters 114-107 in preseason play

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics’ second preseason game of 2023-24 vs. the New York Knicks.

The Boston Celtics started their preseason tilt vs. the New York Knicks‘ A squad a little slow with their reserves, falling into an early 9-point hole, only to storm back and end the first with a 29-28 lead on a Neemias Queta free throw.

The Celtics kept it fairly close until the fourth, eventually succumbing to the Knicks’ superior firepower on the court over key stretches if not on their roster. Boston ultimately fell to New York 114-107 as the Celtics bench showed positive signs and work to do both despite another big game from Payton Pritchard (21 points, 5 assists) and an excellent outing from Dalano Banton (20 points).

Kristaps Porzingis ‘absolutely loves’ playing with Al Horford for the Boston Celtics

“I look forward to having more minutes on the court with him,” said Porzingis.

While at this stage of the NBA’s 2023 preseason, it is too early to say how the Boston Celtics will manage their starters, in the Celtics’ 114-106 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, Boston elected to start both new Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis and veteran forward Al Horford vs. the Sixers. For Porzingis’ part, it was a positive pairing, per the man himself postgame. “I absolutely love playing with Al,” said the Latvian big man.

“He’s very experienced and has been in all kinds of situations and knows the game so well. There’s a lot to learn from him and (he’s) just a smart player,” added Porzingis. “There were a few moments where I saw his experience in those situations and how he reacted on the defensive end.”

“I look forward to having more minutes on the court with him,” added the star Boston big man.

The two Celtics frontcourt players combined for a spectacular double-block on Sixers big man Paul Reed early in the game, with Porzingis putting up 17 points and 5 rebounds as the team’s second-leading scorer.

Why didn’t Jrue Holiday start for the Boston Celtics vs. the Philadelphia 76ers?

Holiday, shooting 2-for-10 from the floor overall, seemed to be working off some initial rust as he learned how Boston plays.

Following his four-year, $30 million contract extension, Payton Pritchard delivered a 26-point performance, aiding the Boston Celtics in their 114-106 home opener victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, the preseason debut for both ball clubs.

New Boston point guard Jrue Holiday, having joined the Celtics organization via trade from the Portland Trail Blazers just this past Wednesday, spent 21 minutes on the court as a backup with the second-string players as he familiarized himself with the team, as noted by head coach Joe Mazzulla. Holiday, shooting 2-for-10 from the floor overall, seemed to be working off some initial rust as he learned how Boston plays.

Reporters Bobby Manning and Josue Pavon from CLNS Media provided a detailed recap of the evening’s events from TD Garden on the most recent episode of the “Garden Report” podcast.

The Boston Celtics had a strong start to their preseason slate of games with a 114-106 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Boston Celtics had a strong start to their preseason slate of games with a 114-106 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, with plenty of rust on both sides of the court, but also plenty of highlight reel-worthy plays from Celtics old and new alike.

Jaylen Brown’s (19 points) backward shorts fashion statement caught attention, but his performance spoke louder, and Kristaps Porzingis (17 points, 5 rebounds) shined in his debut. Boston was led by newly extended Payton Pritchard with 26 points, with star forward Jayson Tatum adding 13 points, 10 boards, and 5 assists to help push the Celtics into the win column.

Porzingis on debut in Boston: I’m very happy to be a Celtic, I’m not going to lie

Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis lauded the TD Garden crowd after his first game in Boston.

Kristaps Porzingis made his long-awaited debut as a member of the Boston Celtics Sunday evening, helping his new club secure a 116-104 preseason victory over the visiting Philadelphia 76ers. The former All-Star finished the night with 17 points and 5 rebounds in 25 minutes of action, getting his first taste of what it means to play professional basketball in the Hub.

After the game, Porzingis was asked about his experience suiting up in Celtics green for the first time. He’s played plenty of games at the TD Garden in his career, but this was the first time as a member of the home team. He was quick to admire the energy the fans played, while also speaking glowingly of his new teammates. Led by newly-extended guard Payton Pritchard, Boston grabbed a thrilling comeback win.

“That was insane,” Porzingis said. “That was insane for a preseason game, I don’t know what to say.”

Porzingis, Holiday make Celtics debut as Celts top Sixers 114-106 in first preseason action

Celtics fans got their first look at Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis Sunday night, but it was Payton Pritchard who locked up the win for Boston.

The Boston Celtics opened the 2023-24 preseason with a 114-106 home victory against the Philadelphia 76ers. Boston will play four more preseason tilts after this one, including another matchup with Philadelphia on Wednesday before opening the regular season on the road against the New York Knicks on October 25.

Under normal circumstances, there isn’t all that much to gleam from NBA preseason action. And Phildalephia was without Joel Embiid and James Harden. But thanks to a busy offseason period, however, things are different for the Celtics this preseason. Not only was Sunday Boston’s first look at newly acquired All-Stars Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, but Payton Pritchard, fresh off of signing  a four-year contract extension, led a dazzling fourth quarter comeback for the home team.

Let’s take a closer look at how things shook out Sunday evening. Here’s your game recap for a Celtics preseason 114-106 win against the 76ers.

PHOTOS – 76ers at Boston: Celtics squelch a starless Philly squad 114-106 in preseason opener

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics first preseason game of 2023-24 vs. the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Boston Celtics took the floor as a team against the Philadelphia 76ers for the first time since being eliminated by the Miami Heat in Game 7 of the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, and looked as rusty as one might think given the long layoff between games. Between sloppy play and backward shorts, there were plenty of areas for the Celtics to sharpen their game on in the preseason’s remaining tilts.

Thankfully for Boston fans, the Sixers had plenty of their own rust to shake off, dropping their preseason opener to the Celtics 114-106 in a fun game that was surprisingly competitive for an exhibition game with the bench putting the contest away behind Payton Pritchard’s 26 points.

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics first preseason game of 2023-24 vs. the Philadelphia 76ers.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla offers prayers to those affected by ongoing violence in Israel

Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla offered prayers to those affected by violence in Israel ahead of Sunday’s preseason game.

As Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla closed his pregame press conference ahead of Sunday’s preseason game against the visiting Philadelphia 76ers, he turned his focus away from basketball and offered an unprompted message of support for those affected by the ongoing conflict in Israel.

A surprise attack by Palestinian militants on civilian targets over the weekend left hundreds dead. Israel has since launched retaliatory strikes on targets in Gaza, declaring a state of war for the first time since 1973. Mazzulla, who has used media availability to discuss social issues in the past, extended his support to those wrapped up in the violence.

“What’s happening in Israel right now,” Mazzulla said. “There should be a lot of thoughts and prayers out to those people.”
