In the Hawaiian paradise, Cameron Smith ready for encore after record-setting week

“I’ve always kind of grown up with the mentality, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

It’s good to be Cameron Smith.

For starters, he’s in paradise for this week’s Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

And last week wasn’t too shabby, either. En route to winning the year-opening, winners-only Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui, the mullet-wearing Aussie set the PGA Tour record for most strokes under par in a 72-hole event at 34 under.

He repeatedly stepped up and held off playing partner, World No. 1 Jon Rahm, in the final two rounds.

In his previous 504 rounds on the PGA Tour, Smith had posted four rounds of 8 under or better; in the Sentry, his rounds 65-64-64-65 all were 8 under or better.

He made 31 birdies, three eagles, and just three bogeys – none on his last 52 holes.

He joined Bryson DeChambeau (2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic) as the only two winners to rank first in both Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and Strokes Gained: Putting since 2004.

He won just shy of $1.5 million.

Sony Open: In-depth preview | Check the yardage

And he became the sixth player to complete the Hawaii double, winning both the Sentry Tournament of Champions (2022) and the Sony Open in Hawaii (2020).

“Golf game felt really good obviously coming down the stretch there with one of the best golfers in the world. To match up with him was something I’ll never forget,” Smith said Wednesday at Waialae Country Club.

Felt really good? The scoring was so alarming last week that Webb Simpson, in his Charlotte home, had to interrupt his morning routine to make sure what he was seeing was right.

“I’m checking the scores, haven’t had my coffee, I’m half-asleep, I kind of did this with my eyes because I see 11 and 12 and then my coffee process stopped because I had to see all these score cards,” Simpson said. “It was crazy.

“It was talked about a lot, but I feel like only those in the golf world really know how good that was. You (golf media) know, players know, caddies know, but I think the typical golf fan, it’s probably hard for them to conceive how good 34-under is. It’s amazing.”

And now, as he’s his own tough act to follow, Smith will try to join Ernie Els (2003) and Justin Thomas (2017) as the only players to win the Hawaii double in the same year. But don’t expect the pressure to get to Smith, or that he’ll go changing his ways now that he’s cracked the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time (he’s 10th), or because he has five PGA Tour titles at age 28.

“I’ve always kind of grown up with the mentality, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. If everything is all working, just do what you need to do, get comfortable and go do something else and relax and get your mind and body right for Thursday,” he said. “I’ve never really wanted to expect anything of myself. I’ve always been a process kind of guy. I feel like if I tick all the boxes I’m going to play some good golf. For sure I definitely want to play well but I never really expect too much of myself.”

His week in Honolulu has gotten off to a great start. After taking Monday off to rest, he did some light work at the course on Tuesday. And on Wednesday, he played the pro-am with motion picture star, Mark Walhberg.

Mark Wahlberg (L) and Cameron Smith (R) of Australia fist bump on the 11th hole during the Pro-Am Tournament prior to the start of the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club on January 12, 2022 in Honolulu, Hawaii. (Photo by Cliff Hawkins/Getty Images)

“Mark was a really good lad,” Smith said. “We had some laughs. One of my best pro-am experiences I think ever. It was really good fun.”

Come Thursday, however, it’s a new week and a new tournament. And this week will be drastically different. The Plantation Course at Kapalua that Smith torched was built into the side of the mountain and features immense fairways and greens. As well, soft breezes throughout the week barely moved the pin flags.

This week presents a harder challenge from tee to green.

“It’s one of the hardest weeks on Tour to hit the fairways, especially with how firm they get over the weekend,” Smith said. “It feels good to be confident with the driver. There’s a lot of 3-woods and iron shots as well; it’s a tricky little place, this one, but I love it.”

So don’t expect a major letdown from Smith. He’s always been well centered and rarely gets ahead of himself. He’ll take this week in a manner worthy of the golf cliché – one hole at a time.

“Just really looking forward to this week,” he said. “I’m ready to get back into it.”

Jon Rahm is the 44th player to surpass $30 million in career PGA Tour earnings

The 27-year-old Spaniard jumps ahead of Stuart Appleby, Bill Haas and Geoff Ogilvy on the all-time list.

Jon Rahm entered the 2022 calendar year with $29,775,822 in career on-course earnings on the PGA Tour.

After his solo second-place finish at the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions on Sunday, the 27-year-old Spaniard added another $810,000 to his total. In the process, Rahm became the 44th golfer to eclipse the $30 million mark on the PGA Tour’s all-time money list. He career total is now $30,585,822.

Rahm leapfrogs up to the No. 42 spot and has passed the likes of Stuart Appleby ($29,828,521), Bill Haas ($30,449,280) and Geoff Ogilvy ($30,453,426). Hunter Mahan ($30,786,458) is now just ahead of Rahm in the No. 41 spot. Tiger Woods leads the Tour’s all-time list with $120,851,706.

Rahm has six career PGA Tour wins, most recently in June at the U.S. Open, to go with six other international wins.

Cam Smith sets PGA Tour scoring record with win at Sentry Tournament of Champions

The field full of winners didn’t disappoint in the first Tour event of 2022.

The PGA Tour’s return to competition this week featured a 38-player field full of winners and the boys didn’t disappoint.

It came down to the 72nd hole at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, where world No. 1 Jon Rahm and Australians Cam Smith and Matt Jones all broke the 30-under mark while vying for the title.

Smith stood on the par-5 18th tee at 33 under with a one-shot lead over playing partner Rahm and a two-shot advantage over Jones, who was in the group ahead. Jones made birdie to tie Rahm at 32 under, who like Smith found the fairway off the tee. Both players just missed the green with their approaches, but each still had a putt for eagle. Smith did well to lag his putt inside five feet and put the pressure on Rahm, who just missed his eagle attempt by a foot. The Spaniard tapped in for birdie to reach 33 under, leaving Smith a three-and-a-half footer for the win at 34 under, a new scoring record on Tour.

The win is Smith’s fourth on the PGA Tour, and continues an interesting trend of alternating victories between New Orleans and Hawaii. His first win was the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2017 with Jonas Blixt. His second came at the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii. He then again won the Zurich last year with fellow Aussie Marc Leishman before his win this week at Kapalua.

World No. 1 Jon Rahm equals scoring mark with 61, shares lead with Cameron Smith at Sentry Tournament of Champions

Cameron Smith shot 9 under and lost a three-shot lead.

Justin Thomas broke the tournament record with a 12-under-par 61 in Saturday’s third round of the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

He stood there alone for about 90 minutes.

Playing in the last group, World No. 1 Jon Rahm made nine birdies and an eagle on his final 12 holes on the Plantation Course to also sign for a 61 and earn a share of the lead with Cameron Smith heading into the final round.

“We were both even-par through 4 and a combined, was it 21-under par between the two of us in the last 14 holes? Well, it’s golf and it’s this golf course, right?” Rahm said. “You get on the birdie train and things like today can happen. It’s the second 61 of the day and whatever it looks like, the 35th 9-under of the week as well, right?

“It’s definitely a doable golf course, but you still have to hit the shots, and come tomorrow we got to keep doing the same thing. We had a fun battle today and I’m guessing tomorrow’s going to be more of the same.”

On another windless, sunlit day at Kapalua, players obliterated par, and Rahm and Smith finished atop the leaderboard at 26 under; the two fell one shot shy of tying Patrick Reed’s 54-hole PGA Tour record for lowest score in relation to par.

A day after tying the 36-hole tournament scoring record of 17 under first set by Ernie Els in 2003, Smith shot 64 and still lost his overnight, three-shot lead.

Rahm has shot 66-66-61, Smith 65-64-64.

Twenty-nine of the 38 players in the field finished in the 60s in the third round. The field averaged 67.71, the lowest mark since the tournament moved to the Plantation Course in 1999.

“It was really good fun out there today,” Smith said. “Obviously playing nice golf helps. But watching Jon was pretty intense there on that back nine, some of the best golf I think I’ve ever seen, definitely some of the best putting.

“So, one more day. Hopefully we can do much of the same tomorrow and we’ll see what happens.”

The two are five shots clear of Daniel Berger, who shot 66 to move to 21 under.

Matt Jones matched the old tournament record with a 62 to move to 20 under; he was 8 under over his last seven holes. Also at 20 under are Patrick Cantlay (66) and Sungjae Im (65).

“So it was a very, you can’t say there was an easy 62 or 11-under, but it was one of the most comfortable rounds I’ve had out there for a long time,” Jones said.

Thomas now shares the record here in Maui and holds the record at the Sony Open in Hawaii, where he shot 59 in the first round en route to winning in 2017.

“I wasn’t crazy aggressive today,” Thomas said. “When you have wedges in your hand with soft greens, you attack.”

Also at 17 under is Hideki Matsuyama (68).

[vertical-gallery id=778198234]

Rahm and Smith are within striking distance of the tournament scoring record of 31 under set by Els in 2003. But the two both know this isn’t a two-man race to the finish.

“There’s such a low score out there you never know what can happen,” Smith said. “I mean, it’s very gettable, there’s so many wedges, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another 61 or 62 out there tomorrow. Just need to keep playing good golf.”

Added Rahm: “If we get a similar a day someone can come and shoot 10, 11, 12-under. I think what I got to keep doing is just keep hitting it as well as I am tee to green. Keep putting it in the fairway and keep hitting good iron shots, give myself plenty of looks, and some of them will go in.

“You can get hot on this golf course and hopefully I can do the same thing tomorrow.”

Aloha course record: Justin Thomas fires 61 in Sentry Tournament of Champions

“If I did something berserk this weekend, I might have a chance to win.”

Saturday went better this year for Justin Thomas.

The world No. 7 lit up the Plantation Course at Kapalua on a bright, warm day with a tournament-record, bogey-free, 12-under-par 61 to move into contention in the year-opening, winners-only tournament.

“I played well. Didn’t do anything crazy. Just took advantage of all the, I felt like, easy opportunities and chances that I had and hit a lot of really good drives, quality iron shots, and wedges. If there’s such a thing as an easy 12-under, I definitely felt like it was,” Thomas said. “I felt like yesterday closing that round out at least gave myself a chance to get a respectable week, respectable finish out of it, and if I did something berserk this weekend, I might have a chance to win.”

Starting the third round 12 shots behind overnight leader Cameron Smith, Thomas started to do his damage on the third hole with a birdie, added another on the fourth, and then dropped a 40-footer for eagle on the par-5 fifth. He made the turn in 5-under 31 following a birdie on the ninth and kept on sizzling.

Starting on the 12th, he wrote down five consecutive 3s on his scorecard, another eagle coming from 7 feet on the par-5 15th. After a birdie 3 from short range on the 16th, he wrapped up his day’s stellar work with a two-putt birdie from 22 feet on the par-5 closing hole for a 7-under 30 on the back nine.

Five players, the most recent being Xander Schauffele in the final round en route to winning in 2019, had posted 62.

When Thomas put his signature to the scorecard, he was two shots out of the lead with leader Cameron Smith headed to the eighth tee.

“Just the same thing,” Thomas said about his approach come Sunday. “I wasn’t crazy aggressive today. When you have wedges in your hand with soft greens, you attack. It doesn’t matter if you’re in last or first. You’re just trying to make birdies and I felt like that’s what I did.

“I was so far back, it’s not like I could really look at the leaderboard and try to play any differently. It was just trying to birdie every hole we played.”

A year ago in Saturday’s third round of the Tournament of Champions, Thomas uttered a homophobic slur that was picked up by a TV mic and his world turned upside down. Despite a genuine, heartfelt, and proper apology, Thomas lost a sponsor and was clearly affected by the incident for many weeks to come.

This time, most of the words picked up by TV mics were playing partner and good friend, Jordan Spieth, saying, “Good shot,” over and over again. The 61 was his fifth round of 61 or better since 2015, the most on the PGA Tour.

Thomas had been frustrated in the first two rounds by a balky putter – he opened with a 74 and followed up with a 67. In the third round, however, he had made more feet of putts through 14 holes than he did the first two days combined.

He hit every green in regulation and needed just 27 putts to make 130 feet of putts.

[vertical-gallery id=778198234]

His superb play in the Tournament of Champions comes as no surprise – he won in 2020 and 2017, and finished third last year and in 2019. Among his 14 PGA Tour titles are the 2017 PGA Championship and the 2021 Players Championship.

Thomas said his first course record came when he was a kid.

“A Junior World practice round. I can’t remember the name of the golf course. It was, I was like probably nine years old. It was like an executive course,” Thomas said. “I just remember because Tiger (Woods) had the course record, and I remember beating him and it was like the coolest thing obviously I had ever done at that time.

“Something tells me it’s not still standing. But that was the first one I had ever broken, and I was pretty pumped about that.”

Cameron Smith ties Big Easy scoring mark, expands lead on crowded leaderboard at Sentry Tournament of Champions

“I think he’s going to be a tough guy to beat this weekend, but it’s not impossible.”

Overnight leader Cameron Smith remained atop the first page of the leaderboard through two rounds of the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

He has plenty of company.

In ideal scoring conditions – gentle breezes, soft greens, huge fairways, and preferred lies – players took apart the Plantation Course at Kapalua and set up a weekend ripe for a stampede full of birdies and eagles to Sunday’s finish line.

Smith, who overcame a slow start for the second consecutive day – he began bogey-bogey – stormed back with an eagle and nine birdies in his last 14 holes to sign for a 9-under-par 64 Friday to reach 17 under. That tied the 36-hole tournament scoring record first set by Ernie Els in 2003.

The field averaged a shade under 68 – the lowest mark since 1999.

“A few bad shots there the first couple of holes. I didn’t really feel that comfortable on the range this morning and it kind of showed those first couple,” Smith said. “Figured it out by the fourth or fifth and was able to get on a bit of a roll with the putter as well.

“I’ve been playing golf basically my whole life, I could figure it out pretty quickly, and like I said, I figured it out within a few holes, started to feel really comfortable there, especially with the driver. Then the putter felt good the whole day.”

Closing with four consecutive birdies, Smith gave himself some breathing room on the stacked leaderboard. World No. 1 Jon Rahm (66-66) and Daniel Berger (66-66) are three shots back at 14 under.

“I think the wind being down obviously was a big factor,” Berger said of the scoring binge. “But it’s tough when you’re one of the last guys out and you see a bunch of low scores early. So it’s to be expected out here and you just kind of have to stay patient and know that the opportunities are going to come, and you have to take advantage when they do.”

Reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year Patrick Cantlay (66-67) is at 13 under.

Hideki Matsuyama (69-65) and Sungjai Im (67-67) are at 12 under.

Kevin Na, who will defend his 2021 title next week in the Sony Open (67-68) is at 11 under. Seven players finished at 10 under, including Brooks Koepka (68-68), 2019 Sentry champion Xander Schauffele (69-67), and Sam Burns (72-64).

Seven players are 9 under, including Bryson DeChambeau (69-68).

Rahm was often heard muttering to himself about leaving many of his putts short. His pace improved on the back nine as he birdied three of his last five holes.

“It was really good tee to green. If there’s anything to put an asterisk on, it’s maybe putting,” Rahm said. “More than anything the speed, right? I feel like the greens were a little bit slower today. Me and Patrick (Cantlay) talked about it a little bit. It could have just been us, but it felt like they were a little bit slower and I just felt like I left a lot of putts out there on line that with the right speed might have had a chance of going in.

“But either way, still a solid round of golf.”

Cantlay had his woes with the putter, as well.

“I played great today and got absolutely nothing out of it,” he said. “I don’t think I made a putt outside maybe 4 or 5 feet. That just means my game’s in a good spot and I’m well-positioned for a good weekend.”

As is Matsuyama. The reigning Masters champion has had a major champion in his gallery through the first two days – 2021 U.S. Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso. Matsuyama made seven birdies and an eagle.

“I haven’t been practicing much so I didn’t really have high expectations but hopefully I can play well on the weekend. If I can hit some good drives and make some putts I think I’ll be OK.

“I don’t know if (Saso) learned much from me, but I’m definitely happy that she would want to follow me and watch me play.”

Berger was paired with Smith in the second round, which paid dividends.

“Cameron had a tough start and then he pulled it together on the kind of the end of the back nine,” Berger said. “And it’s always easy to play with someone when they’re making a ton of birdies and you’re seeing balls go in the hole and he made every putt he looked at today.

“I think he’s going to be a tough guy to beat this weekend, but it’s not impossible.”

What is possible is one player equaling or breaking Els’ tournament mark of 31 under set in 2003. But Smith isn’t thinking about that.

“I’m just trying to do the best I can, to be honest,” he said. “I’m worried about one shot at a time. Those records are cool and stuff, but I’m just trying to do my best I can every shot.

“There’s going to be low scores. There always is around here. And I’ve just got to prepare for that the best I can and hopefully have a good weekend.”
