Cole Hammer ‘almost blacks out,’ shoots career-low 64 to lead RSM Classic

“I saw some cameras show up, I knew I was doing something right.”

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — After making his first cut on the PGA Tour as a professional last week in Houston, Cole Hammer is taking advantage of a sponsor’s exemption into the RSM Classic, grabbing the first-round lead by carding nine birdies for a career-low 8-under 64 at the Plantation Course at Sea Island Resort.

“I almost blacked out there for a little bit,” Hammer said. “It went by in a heartbeat, but at the same time was a long day.”

And an unseasonably cold one at that. The temperature at the Seaside Course barely broke 50 degrees on Thursday. Having previously played in the Jones Cup, an amateur tournament held at nearby Ocean Forest, Hammer had experienced the wind whipping off the water in these parts and bundled up in four layers and a beanie.

“When I played the Jones Cup, it was 35 degrees, blowing 30 and raining so I told myself I’ll never play in weather like that again,” he said. “I was ready for it.”

RSM Classic: Watch PGA Tour Live on ESPN+ | Friday tee times

What Hammer wasn’t ready for was six consecutive missed cuts to start his pro career, an unexpectedly sharp learning curve after a decorated amateur career topped off by leading University of Texas to a national championship in June.

“It was a really dark period and I didn’t know what was going on,” he said. “I just was putting so much pressure on myself early in the tournament that I’d get behind the 8-Ball.”

After missing the cut at the Wyndham Championship in August, he did a deep dive on his swing with instructor Bruce Davidson and is starting to see the fruits of their labor. Ten days ago, he narrowly missed securing guaranteed starts at the final stage of Korn Ferry Tour Q-School — he’ll have conditional status — and then opened with a 74 at the Cadence Houston Open.

“I just had about zero patience. As soon as I made a bogey, I felt like the world was ending,” he explained. “In Houston I just relaxed, took a deep breath and I made some bogeys. I basically just told myself that I can come back and nobody plays perfect golf and that’s what I was trying to do.”

Hammer shot 65 in the second round to make the cut and finished T-27. It gave him a jolt of confidence, especially when he found out after his final round that he had secured a sponsor invite into the RSM Classic.

“I was batting zero on the PGA Tour. I needed to get that monkey off my back,” he said. “To do that in my hometown event in Houston was huge for me.”

Hammer noted that he didn’t sleep well Wednesday night and started his round with low expectations.

“I hit my best drive of the day on No. 1, my 10th hole, and that swing gave me some confidence going into the back nine. I hit a wedge like two feet and knocked that in,” Hammer said.

That was his fifth birdie of the day and before long he looked up and spied his last name atop the leaderboard.

“I saw some cameras show up, I knew I was doing something right,” he said.

Hammer’s opening-round 64 was a stroke better than rookie Ben Griffin, who also played the Plantation Course. England’s Callum Tarren, who said the weather reminded him a little too much of home, and Beau Hossler tied for the low round of the day at the Seaside Course with 6-under 64s.

Hossler, a 27-year-old Texas grad who is still seeking his first victory on Tour, said he could relate to Hammer’s slow start in the pro ranks and expects him to turn the corner — perhaps even this week.

“He’s probably struggled a little bit since he’s been a pro, but tell you what, I don’t care what level you’re playing at, it’s ups and downs. I’ve had it in my career, every player out here’s had it,” Hossler said. “I think there’s a learning curve and once he gets comfortable at this level, just like I did, I think you start to say I can compete with these guys. He certainly has the ability and the competitive nature to do that. It’s just a matter of him getting experience, getting comfortable, getting confident and then frankly just playing well and popping off at the right time.”

At chilly RSM Classic, winter gear is flying off the shelves at the merchandise tent

Shoppers at the RSM Classic have been fighting over stylish ski caps, cashmere sweaters and puffy jackets.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Georgia – The merchandise shop at the RSM Classic was bustling on Thursday morning — and for good reason.

On an unseasonably cool day, it made for a safe reprieve from temperatures barely trickling into the 50s. As a result, shoppers were fighting over stylish ski caps, cashmere sweaters and puffy jackets.

The RSM merch is heavy on Peter Millar and Polo gear, which makes sense given the tournament’s ties to Davis Love III. There was one polo with the Georgia Bulldog logo that fans of the No. 1-ranked college football team were eyeing and a strong hat and belt game featuring multiple versions of the tourney logo.

Holiday shopping clearly was underway but the theme of the day for many of the buyers was staying warm. As one woman who was buying a winter hat noted, “This is for me and I’m going to wear it now.”

RSM Classic tournament host Davis Love III withdraws with injury

Love withdrew from the tournament before play began, citing a left wrist injury.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Tournament host Davis Love III pulled out of his own tournament on Thursday.

The 58-year-old Love, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, was expected to make his 788th PGA Tour start this week at the RSM Classic. But he withdrew from the tournament before play began, citing a left wrist injury. He had made the cut six times in 12 previous appearances in the tournament, with a T-4 in 2012.

Scott Brown was the benefactor of Love’s decision not to play. Brown teed off at 9:20 a.m. ET on the Plantation Course with Cameron Champ and Sahith Theegala.

Love, winner of 21 PGA Tour titles including the 1997 PGA Championship, is the unofficial mayor of this barrier island, and will still be involved in tournament activities including the trophy presentation on Sunday. The Davis Love Foundation is the tournament’s main benefactor.

Anders Alberts also withdrew from the tournament due to a back injury, but there were no more alternates on site to take his spot so the field size has been reduced to 155.

Check the yardage book: Sea Island’s Seaside Course for the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic

See StrackaLine’s hole-by-hole maps of the Seaside Course in Georgia, which along with the Plantation Course hosts the RSM Classic.

Sea Island’s Seaside Course is one of the two courses in play for this week’s RSM Classic on the PGA Tour. The first two rounds also include the popular resort’s Plantation course – each player competes one round on each course – before all weekend play moves solely to the Seaside Course in St. Simons Island, Georgia.

The Seaside Course originally was laid out by famed designers Harry S. Colt and Charles Alison in 1929 and was redesigned by Tom Fazio in 1999. It will play to 7,005 yards with a par of 70 for the RSM Classic. The Plantation Course – renovated by tournament host Davis Love III and his brother, Mark, in 2019 – will play to 7,060 yards with a par of 72.

The Seaside Course ranks as the No. 1 public-access layout in Georgia and also is No. 83 on Golfweek’s Best list of modern courses since 1960 in the U.S. The Plantation Course is the No. 7 public-access track in Georgia.

Thanks to yardage books provided by StrackaLine – the maker of detailed yardage books for thousands of courses around the world – we can see exactly the challenges the players face this week on the Seaside Course. Check out the maps of each hole below.

A few days after his fifth PGA Tour win, Tony Finau withdraws from 2022 RSM Classic

This would have been Finau’s second RSM Classic appearance.

On Sunday, Tony Finau claimed his fifth PGA Tour victory and his third win since late July 2022. To say he’s in great form is an understatement.

Coming into the week, Finau was the betting favorite (+900) for the RSM Classic at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia, and was hoping to earn back-to-back wins for the second time in 2022.

However, he’s no longer in the field.

Finau withdrew from the RSM, citing an injury, and was replaced by Kevin Chappell.

This is the final Tour event of 2022, but we’ll see Finau in December at Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge in Albany, The Bahamas.

Field for the 2022 RSM Classic features Tony Finau, six past champions and eight major winners

The RSM Classic will be the final official event on the Tour’s schedule for 2022.

For what it lacks in top-ranked players, the field for the final official PGA Tour event of 2022 makes up with fan-favorite names.

The Sea Island Resort in St. Simons Island, Georgia, plays host once again to the RSM Classic this week. The highest-ranked player in the field, Tony Finau, returns to Sea Island for the first time since 2014 and leads the short list of top-50 players in the world, including Brian Harman, Sepp Straka, Tom Hoge, Kevin Kisner and Seamus Power. Finau will come in fresh off his win in Houston. He’s also the last golfer to win consecutive events on the PGA Tour, doing so last summer.

Past champions teeing it up this week are Kisner (2015), two-time winner Robert Streb (2014, 2020), Chris Kirk (2013), Mackenzie Hughes (2016), Austin Cook (2017) and Tyler Duncan (2019). Sea Island resident Davis Love III will play the role of tournament host and highlights a small group of major champions in the field, which includes the likes of Stewart Cink, Jason Day, Jason Dufner, Zach Johnson, Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose and Webb Simpson.

RSM Classic: PGA Tour Live on ESPN+

Last year’s winner, Talor Gooch, has moved on to LIV Golf and will not defend his title this year. Charles Howell III, the 2018 RSM champion, has also moved to LIV Golf.

If you’re a fan of bonus golf, the RSM Classic is the event for you as four of the last six editions of the tournament have gone into a playoff, including three consecutive events from 2018-2020. Fans will clamoring for a playoff as this week’s Tour stop in Georgia will be the last of 2022 until the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Jan. 5-8 in Hawaii.

Following a Thanksgiving break, Tiger Woods will play in and host his 2022 Hero World Challenge, an unofficial event, Dec. 1-4 in the Bahamas. A week later, the QBE Shootout returns to Naples, Florida, Dec. 9-11, without longtime host Greg Norman, now the CEO and commissioner of LIV Golf.
