Oklahoma offers Liberty transfer Micaiah Overton, brother of five-star DL Lebbeus Overton

Liberty defensive tackle transfer Micaiah Overton picked up an OU offer. He and his brother Lebbeus Overton will visit Oklahoma in March.

When Micaiah Overton arrived at Liberty, he was a 218 pound tight end. Now, he’s leaving Liberty as a 6-foot-3, 300 pound defensive tackle.

247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong reported yesterday that Micaiah had entered his name into the transfer portal and that he plans to play with his brother Lebbeus Overton at his next stop.

Oklahoma associate head coach, co-defensive coordinator and defensive tackles coach Todd Bates offered Micaiah today.

At Bessemer Academy in Alabama, Micaiah had 55 tackles, 18 tackles for loss and three sacks as a senior. He also caught 16 passes for 368 yards and five touchdowns that season.

Micaiah’s brother, Lebbeus Overton, is a five-star defensive line target for the Sooners that recently reclassified into the 2022 class. Oklahoma made the cut into Lebbeus’ top-five schools. Lebbeus’ plan is to enroll at the school of his choice this summer.

He’s locked in on Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas A&M. Micaiah will join on visits to Norman, Eugene and College Station in March. Those dates have not been locked in yet. – Wiltfong, 247Sports.

It’s noteworthy that the pair are visiting Norman, Eugene and College Station as a duo. That gives the indication that this may be a battle between Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas A&M.

Their father, Milton Overton, was a four-year starter on Oklahoma’s offensive line during the 1992-95 seasons. Milton Overton served as Texas A&M’s associate athletics director from 2003-09 and Alabama’s associate athletics director from 2009-15.

Then, he was hired as Florida A&M’s athletics director in June of 2015. Milton Overton was named Kennesaw State’s director of athletics on October 31, 2017, and he still oversees the Owls’ athletics today.

As far as Lebbeus’ recruitment is concerned, On3 recruiting experts Gerry Hamilton and Chad Simmons both submitted On3 predictions for Lebbeus to wind up at Texas A&M on Feb. 1. 247Sports’ reporter Rusty Mansell of Georgia Insider also recently submitted a crystal ball prediction for Lebbeus to Texas A&M on Feb. 3.

Lebbeus and Micaiah appear to be a package deal and it remains to be seen if a third visit for Lebbeus and a first for Micaiah to Norman can swing the pendulum in the Sooners’ favor.

ESPN tabs Oklahoma ‘winners’ on national signing day

ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren included Oklahoma among his national signing day “winners.” Here’s why.

National signing day saw Oklahoma ink five more players to its 2022 signing class. As a result, ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren included Oklahoma among his national signing day “winners.”

The Sooners have added quite a few pieces in the transfer portal to help fill voids, including quarterback Dillon Gabriel, defensive lineman Jonah Laulu and a few others.

The new staff, led by Brent Venables, has done a nice job in recruiting, as well, with the limited time they have been given. On Wednesday, Venables landed a commitment from four-star wide receiver Jamarrien Burt, who had been committed to Florida at one point in the process.

The Sooners also got a commitment from ESPN 300 defensive lineman Gracen Halton, the No. 264 prospect overall. In addition to Halton, Oklahoma got three-star defensive end R. Mason Thomas to commit as well.

Venables was able to keep ESPN 300 athlete Gentry Williams in the class after other programs recruited him down the stretch. – VanHaaren, ESPN.

Williams was the first to sign with OU on national signing day. According to 247Sports‘ composite rankings, Williams is the Sooners’ highest-rated player in the 2022 signing class. In its composite rankings, 247Sports ranks Williams as the top player from the state of Oklahoma, the No. 11 cornerback and the nation’s No. 92 player overall.

After Williams’ ink met paper, Oklahoma quickly added the signing of R Mason Thomas. On3 ranks Thomas as the 20th-best player from the state of Florida, the No. 17 EDGE and the No. 140 player nationally.

Then, the Sooners got more secondary help in the form of another Sunshine State talent. Jamarrien Burt, who was originally committed to Florida, signed with OU. In On3’s consensus rankings, Burt is rated as a three-star signee, the No. 453 player overall and the No. 43 cornerback.

The fourth player to sign with Oklahoma was a flip from Oregon. Gracen Halton is a four-star signee in the 247Sports composite rankings. 247Sports lists Halton as the No. 34 defensive lineman.

Lastly, OU secured one final flip. Oklahoma signed four-star EDGE Kevonte Henry. According to 247Sports, Henry is the No. 216 player nationally and the No. 24 EDGE.

Oklahoma absolutely closed strong on national signing day. The Sooners aren’t necessarily entirely done either. OU is also targeting five-star defensive lineman Lebbeus Overton, who just reclassified into the 2022 class, and five-star offensive lineman Josh Conerly Jr.

Oklahoma bolsters defensive backfield with signing of Jamarrien Burt

Oklahoma made it a big national signing day in the defensive backfield, adding the signature of Jamarrien Burt out of Ocala, Fla.

National signing day has turned into a big day for the future of Oklahoma’s defensive backfield. Earlier this morning, OU secured a signature from the No. 1 player in the Sooner State, four-star defensive back Gentry Williams.

Now, Oklahoma has locked in the signing of Jamarrien Burt. Burt has been a two-way player at Forest High School in Ocala, Fla., but the expectation is for Burt to wind up as a piece in OU’s secondary in the future.

In just two weeks time, Oklahoma managed to add Burt to a talented 2022 defensive backs class. Originally a Florida commit, Burt decommited from the Gators on Nov. 21 after then-head coach Dan Mullen was fired.

Oklahoma offered Burt on Jan. 20 and he visited OU a day later. Now, he joins Williams, safety Robert Spears-Jennings and cornerback Jayden Rowe as defensive back signees.

ESPN ranks Burt the highest of the four recruiting services. According to ESPN, Burt is a four-star signee, the No. 52 wide receiver and the 48th-best player from the state of Florida.

247Sports, Rivals and On3 all rank Burt as a three-star signee. According to 247Sports, Burt is the the nation’s No. 29 athlete and the No. 54 player out of Florida. Rivals rates Burt as the country’s No. 55 cornerback and the No. 75 player from Florida. Lastly, On3 ranks Burt as the nation’s No. 61 cornerback and the No. 72 player from Florida.

Oklahoma Sooners ink four-star EDGE R Mason Thomas out of Florida

Oklahoma and new defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis signed four-star EDGE R Mason Thomas, winning the recruitment over Iowa State and Miami.

New Oklahoma defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis made R Mason Thomas one of his first targets when he arrived in Norman.

It paid off today as Thomas officially signed with the Sooners.

The 6-foot-2, 215 pound EDGE rusher is out of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. OU won out over Iowa State and Miami. Thomas had been committed to Iowa State since July 6, 2021, but a Dec. 9 visit from Chavis began to flip his recruitment.

Thomas was offered the next day by Oklahoma and he officially visited the Sooners on Jan. 21. OU also had to hold off a late charge from Miami. Thomas visited Miami on Jan. 28 and his high school teammate and fellow OU target Ahmad Moten wound up signing with Miami today.

Ultimately, Moten and Thomas’ paths diverged and the allure of being coached by Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables and Chavis won out over both Iowa State and Miami.

Naturally, Chavis was fired up about the signing.

According to both On3 and 247Sports, Thomas is a four-star signee. On3 ranks Thomas as the No. 139 player nationally, the No. 17 EDGE and 20th-highest-rated player from the state of Florida. 247Sports rated Thomas as the No. 205 player overall, the No. 22 EDGE and the 24th-best player from Florida.

Rivals and ESPN rank Thomas as a three-star signee. Thomas is the No. 34 weakside defensive end according to Rivals and the 67th defensive end in ESPN’s rankings.

Thomas joins cornerback Gentry Williams, safety Robert Spears-Jennings, athlete Jaren Kanak, linebacker Kobie McKinzie, linebacker Kip Lewis, cornerback Jayden Rowe, defensive lineman Cedric Roberts and defensive lineman Alton Tarber as a defensive signing in Oklahoma’s 2022 class.

2022 EDGE Kevonte Henry receives 247Sports crystal ball projection for Oklahoma

Oklahoma target Kevonte Henry, a 2022 EDGE, has been crystal-balled to wind up with the Sooners on national signing day.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is reportedly leaving his post as the Wolverines’ head coach to become the next head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

Chris Balas, senior editor of The Wolverine, is reporting that Harbaugh plans to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.

This news about Harbaugh just might have been enough to tilt the scales in Oklahoma’s favor in the recruitment of Kevonte Henry.

Oklahoma already had an On3 prediction for class of 2022 EDGE Kevonte Henry to wind up with the Sooners from On3 director of recruiting Chad Simmons.

Now, Harbaugh’s decision to leave Michigan has others forecasting that Henry will indeed sign with Oklahoma on national signing day.

OUInsider’s Parker Thune was the first reporter from 247Sports to flip his crystal-ball prediction for Henry from Michigan to Oklahoma. After Thune submitted his crystal-ball flip for Henry, OUInsider’s Brandon Drumm and Joey Helmer flipped their predictions in favor of the Sooners as well.

247Sports’ director of recruiting, Steve Wiltfong, and 247Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins flipped their predictions from Michigan to Oklahoma, too.

According to 247Sports, the 6-foot-4, 225 pound recruit is a four-star. Henry is ranked as the No. 216 player nationally by 247Sports and as the country’s No. 24 EDGE in the 2022 class.

On3 also rates Henry as a four-star prospect and as the No. 175 player overall in the 2022 class. Henry is listed as the No. 19 EDGE and ninth-best player from the state of California according to On3.

Rivals and ESPN rank Henry as a three-star recruit. According to Rivals, Henry is the No. 33 weakside defensive end in the 2022 class. ESPN rates Henry as the No. 47 outside linebacker in the 2022 class.

Here’s a taste of Henry’s Hudl tape.

It feels like it’s turning into a big signing day for OU with late EDGE and defensive line talent. R Mason Thomas is picking up traction toward signing with Oklahoma tomorrow and his high school teammate Ahmad Moten is as well.

There’s also multiple predictions that former Oregon commit and four-star defensive lineman Gracen Halton will sign with OU, too.

Here’s a good look at some of OU’s final targets ahead of national signing day.

On3 experts flip predictions from Iowa State to Oklahoma for R Mason Thomas ahead of national signing day

A pair of On3 recruiting experts flipped their predictions from Iowa State to Oklahoma for 2022 EDGE R Mason Thomas.

There’s a list of recruits to keep an eye on for Oklahoma on national signing day. One of those names to follow is class of 2022 defensive end and EDGE rusher R Mason Thomas.

Thomas is listed as a 6-foot-2, 215 pound prospect on 247Sports. He’s been committed to Iowa State since Jul. 6, 2021, but he received an offer from Oklahoma on Dec. 10 and took an official visit to OU on Jan. 21.

The Cardinal Gibbons High School product out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is teammates with fellow OU target and 2022 defensive lineman Ahmad Moten.

247Sports’ Parker Thune has had a crystal-ball prediction in for Thomas to sign with Oklahoma since Dec. 19. Now, a pair of On3 recruiting experts have flipped their predictions from Iowa State to Oklahoma for Thomas.

On3 senior recruiting editor Jeremy Crabtree and On3 director of recruiting Chad Simmons each flipped their predictions for Thomas to Oklahoma just ahead of national signing day.

On3 ranks Thomas as a four-star recruit. He’s rated as the country’s No. 139 player nationally, the No. 17 EDGE and the 20th-best player in the state of Florida.

According to 247Sports, Thomas is a four-star EDGE. He’s ranked as the No. 205 player nationally by 247Sports, the No. 22 EDGE and the 24th-best player from the state of Florida.

Rivals and ESPN rank Thomas as a three-star recruit. Rivals has Thomas as the nation’s No. 34 weakside defensive end and the No. 79 player from Florida. ESPN lists Thomas as the No. 67 defensive end and 119th-rated player from Florida.

OU Insider’s Brandon Drumm also submitted a crystal-ball prediction for Thomas to Oklahoma.

Here’s a look at Thomas’ Hudl film.

Offers list at DL/EDGE illustrates Brent Venables and Oklahoma’s commitment to transformation up front

Since being hired, Brent Venables and his staff have sent out at least 25 offers to EDGE/DL talent. What does it say about the future at OU?

Since being officially introduced as Oklahoma’s head football coach on Dec. 6, Brent Venables and his staff have sent out at least 25 offers to edge and defensive line talent spanning the 2022, 2023 and 2024 classes.

Oklahoma will need to replace its top three sacks and tackles for loss producers from the 2021 season: outside linebacker Nik Bonitto, defensive lineman Isaiah Thomas and defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey. The three announced ahead of OU’s bowl game versus Oregon their intentions to declare for the 2022 NFL draft.

Venables quickly offered and signed Deerfield Beach High School (Florida) defensive lineman Alton Tarber. Then, OU added Hawaii defensive lineman Jonah Laulu and Tulane defensive tackle Jeffery Johnson from the transfer portal. That pair combined for 77 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 2021.

The Sooners were one of the final choices for Missouri transfer defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo, too, before he chose LSU. OU has offers to 2022 defensive linemen and edge prospects Gracen Halton, Kevonte Henry, Ahmad Moten and R. Mason Thomas.

Halton, Henry, Moten and Thomas all have predictions from a variety of reporters to wind up signing with Oklahoma next week.

247Sports’ Parker Thune submitted a crystal-ball prediction for Halton to Oklahoma several days before Halton decommitted from Oregon. Since then, multiple 247Sports reporters have jumped on board with Halton ending up at OU.

Henry is a Michigan commit and listed as an edge by 247Sports, but the Sooners offered him on Dec. 29, and he visited Oklahoma on Jan. 14. On3 director of recruiting Chad Simmons updated his prediction for Henry from Michigan to Oklahoma. It’s worth noting 247Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins flipped his prediction for Henry from Michigan to Arizona several days ago, so that’s a conflicting prediction.

Moten was offered by OU on Dec. 7. Thune submitted a crystal-ball prediction for Oklahoma on Dec. 19, and 247Sports’ Southeast recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins put in a crystal-ball prediction for Moten to Oklahoma last week.

Thomas earned an Oklahoma offer on Jan. 12. Thune flipped his prediction for Thomas from Iowa State to Oklahoma on Dec. 19.

Whether or not Oklahoma lands all of these prospects, it seems safe to assume the Sooners are adding at least a couple of prospects on national signing day. All of this is just in the 2022 class to potentially go along with defensive line signee Cedric Roberts.

In the 2023 class, Oklahoma has sent out offers to 13 recruits listed as either defensive linemen or edge players since Venables was hired. That list comprises Rueben Bain, Vic Burley, Kelby Collins, Enow-M’beleke EttaKeldric Faulk, Derion Gullette, Bai Jobe, Kayden McDonald, Xzavier McLeod, Jaquavious Russaw, Desmond Umeozulu, Colton Vasek and A’mauri Washington.

In the 2024 class, the Sooners have sent out four offers to defensive linemen since Venables’ hiring. The 2024 list comprises T.A. Cunningham, Hevin Brown-Shuler, Nigel Smith II and a re-offer to David Stone.

What does all of this mean? For starters, it indicates Venables and his staff knew they needed an infusion of proven collegiate starters, Johnson and Laulu, out of the transfer portal to help offset the losses of Bonitto, Thomas and Winfrey.

After that, it’s a clear indication of two things: Venables understands a move to the SEC means Oklahoma needs to address its depth up front defensively. It also shows a belief that Oklahoma’s foundation moving forward needs to start in the trenches defensively.

It’s probably worth pointing out that a couple of these prospects listed as edge players could end up playing linebacker. Still, the message has been sent loudly and clearly.

Now and into the future, it starts at Oklahoma along the defensive front.

Oklahoma offers 2022 TE John Locke ahead of national signing day

Oklahoma offered Louisiana Tech commit and class of 2022 tight end John Locke just ahead of next week’s national signing day.

Oklahoma’s tight end room is already set to look radically different heading into the 2022 season. Jeremiah Hall elected to enter the 2022 NFL Draft and Austin Stogner jumped into the NCAA’s transfer portal and wound up with ex-OU quarterback Spencer Rattler at South Carolina.

The Sooners added Missouri transfer Daniel Parker Jr. and Oklahoma has already signed a pair of tight ends in the 2022 class in Bellevue West High School’s Kaden Helms and Aledo High School’s Jason Llewellyn.

OU also returns tight end Brayden Willis who has 36 receptions for 484 receiving yards and six touchdown grabs over the course of his career.

Oklahoma might not be done adding either. OU just offered class of 2022 tight end John Locke out of O’Connor High School in Helotes, Texas.

Locke is currently a Louisiana Tech commit. He was offered by Louisiana Tech on Dec. 23 and committed to the Bulldogs last week on Jan. 22.

In addition to Louisiana Tech, OU joins an offers list for Locke that includes Air Force, Colorado State, Dartmouth, Harvard and Yale.

ESPN has Locke ranked the highest, where he’s listed as the country’s No. 40 tight end and the No. 226 player from the state of Texas in the 2022 class. On3 rates Locke as the No. 89 tight end and the No. 225 player from the state of Texas. According to 247Sports, Locke is a three-star prospect, the nation’s No. 127 tight end and the No. 259 player from the state of Texas.

247Sports’ Parker Thune submits Oklahoma crystal-ball projection for 2022 ATH Gavin Freeman

OUInsider’s Parker Thune of the 247Sports network submitted a crystal-ball prediction for Heritage Hall athlete Gavin Freeman to Oklahoma.

Oklahoma is looking to add some final pieces to its 2022 signing class on national signing day next week on Feb. 2.

The Sooners might be staying close to home for one of them. Parker Thune of OUInsider submitted a 247Sports crystal-ball prediction for three-star athlete Gavin Freeman to land at Oklahoma.

The Heritage Hall High School product from Oklahoma City is currently committed to Texas Tech. The Red Raiders offered Freeman on Oct. 8 and he committed to Tech the next day.

According to 247Sports, Freeman is the the nation’s No. 156 athlete and the 28th-best player in Oklahoma. He’s listed as a 5-foot-9, 170 pound recruit by 247Sports.

ESPN ranks Freeman as the nation’s No. 185 wide receiver and the 24th-best player from Oklahoma in the 2022 class. On3 has Freeman ranked as a cornerback. According to On3, Freeman is the country’s No. 124 cornerback and the 24th-best player from Oklahoma.

247Sports hasn’t listed where Freeman received an offer from Oklahoma, but Freeman retweeted Oklahoma wide receivers coach Cale Gundy’s “#OUDNA” tweet on Friday.

This seems to indicate that perhaps Freeman finally received an offer from OU. If this is the case, that might be exactly what Freeman has been waiting on to flip from Texas Tech to Oklahoma.

It’s also potentially a great case of something the Sooners Wire staff touched on earlier this week in regards to in-state recruiting.

Freeman fits the mold for players that Stoops used to like to take chances on while he served as the head coach at Oklahoma. Now, OU could be taking a similar chance here on another in-state talent in Freeman.

2022 ATH/CB Jamarrien Burt forecasted to Oklahoma by Rivals

SoonerScoop co-publisher and recruiting editor Josh McCuistion put in a Rivals FutureCast for cornerback Jamarrien Burt to Oklahoma.

It looks like this recruiting weekend might soon lead to a commitment and eventual signing for Oklahoma.

SoonerScoop co-publisher and recruiting editor Josh McCuistion of the Rivals network submitted a FutureCast for 2022 athlete and cornerback Jamarrien Burt to Oklahoma.

Burt was one of several players across the 2022 and 2023 classes that visited OU this past weekend. As Bryant Crews touched on in that piece, Burt wasn’t on the previous Oklahoma coaching staff’s radar, but he quickly decided to take an official visit to Norman after receiving an offer from the current Sooner staff.

Burt is a 6-foot-1, 175 pound prospect out of Ocala, Fla. He originally committed to Florida last summer on June 24, 2021, but Burt decommitted from the Gators back on Nov. 21.

Burt has played on both sides of the football at Forest High School in Ocala. His ability to play both offense and defense has him listed as an athlete by 247Sports and as a wide receiver by ESPN. On3 and Rivals both have Burt listed as a cornerback.

247Sports ranks Burt as the nation’s No. 27 athlete in the 2022 class and the 54th-best player from the state of Florida. ESPN rates Burt as the country’s No. 54 wide receiver and the state of Florida’s 49th-best prospect.

On3 ranks Burt as the No. 45 cornerback and Florida’s 56th highest-rated recruit in the 2022 class. According to Rivals, Burt is the No. 57 cornerback and 80th-best player from Florida.

In the On3 consensus rankings, Burt is ranked as the No. 408 player overall and the No. 40 cornerback. Meanwhile, in the 247Sports composite rankings, Burt checks in at No. 458 nationally and as the No. 28 athlete.

Oklahoma currently has the No. 8 class nationally according to On3‘s consensus team rankings and the No. 10 class according to 247Sports and Rivals‘ team rankings.

The Sooners have also added three players to their defensive backfield via the transfer portal: cornerback C.J. Coldon from Wyoming, defensive back Trey Morrison from North Carolina and cornerback Kani Walker from Louisville.
