WATCH: Derrick White’s best highlights of the 2021-22 NBA season so far

Get to know the newest Celtic’s game in this clip.

There is a new face in the backcourt of the Boston Celtics, one who might be familiar given how regularly he helped his prior team burn the Celtics on a regular basis — former San Antonio Spurs guard Derrick White.

But plenty of Celtics fans do not know his game well if at all, and the 27-year-old, 6-foot-4 wing is certainly worth getting to know if that happens to be the case with you as well. A product of the University of Colorado, White has played only for the Spurs — the team who drafted him 29th overall in 2017. He has averaged 11.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists over his pro career, and shot 34.4% from 3 and 44.5% overall.

Team president Brad Stevens talks about Isaiah Thomas as a potential roster addition on Toucher and Rich

Could a reunion be in the works?

After an absolutely torrid 2022 NBA trade deadline, the Boston Celtics found themselves with five open roster spots in need of filling, and while there has since been one filled by former Celtics center Luke Kornet and another converted from a two way deal to a full one for Boston forward Sam Hauser, there’s still plenty of room on the roster with three regular slots and a two way slot vacated by Hauser on his conversion.

It probably wasn’t in Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens’ plans to talk about a particular player he found great success with early in his NBA coaching career in his appearance on the popular New England sports radio show “Toucher and Rich.”

But the team president fielded an inquiry into the possibility of that player’s — Isaiah Thomas — return just the same. “I love Isaiah,” answered Stevens. “I’ve talked to Isaiah ever since he left.”

Reflecting on the bittersweet changes of a trade deadline, Boston’s Jayson Tatum welcomes his new teammates

The Celtics star also admitted he tried to stay out of the way of the front office on Thursday.

Like many of his fans, Boston Celtics All-Star forward Jayson Tatum had mixed emotions about the passing of the 2022 NBA trade deadline and the cluster of moves the Celtics made in order to improve the team he plays for.

Reunions from Celtics squads past and Team USA compatriots helped ease the sting of losing the camaraderie of players he’s grown used to having alongside him on the court and on the sidelines, some who have been through some pretty wild rides in recent seasons. But growth is never without some discomfort if not pain and the Missourian shared his feelings with the media in a press conference called after shootaround on Friday morning.

“You hate to see teammates go,” explained Tatum. “Guys that you’ve gotten close with, and built a relationship with.”

Celtics president Brad Stevens opened up on Boston’s trade deadline thinking, his new roster

Team president Brad Stevens opened up about his thinking guiding the team through the trade deadline.

The Boston Celtics made a lot of moves at the 2022 NBA trade deadline, enough to radically reshape the team’s bench to a (hopefully) more competitive version of itself with the addition of some new and old faces both.

San Antonio Spurs guard Derrick White joined the team for the first time as veteran big man Daniel Theis was reunited with the team that traded him away for cap savings at last season’s trade deadline. The team shipped out Josh Richardson, Dennis Schroder, Romeo Langford, Enes Freedom, Bruno Fernando, Bol Bol, and PJ Dozier in the process, and the following morning, team president Brad Stevens met with the media to discuss the substantial changes to the team.

Stevens began by thanking and acknowledging the players who were no longer with the team, and then began to shed some light on what went into the unexpected trade for White.

Celtics Lab 89: Taking stock of the Celtics, Eastern Conference after a VERY busy trade deadline with Yossi Gozlan

Get up to speed on a very busy deadline with this podcast.

While more than a few fans and analysts suspected that the Boston Celtics were set to perhaps at most make a small move to duck under the tax, the team instead re-shaped its roster about as much as is possible without moving core players in a blockbuster deal.

Now, after starting the day with 17 players (counting two ways), the team finds itself with five (yes, five) open roster spots, Derrick White from the San Antonio Spurs, Daniel Theis returning from the Houston Rockets and perhaps the most intimidating defenses assembled in recent NBA history to play with for the rest of the season.

What do these moves mean for the Celtics in the long and short terms? What can we expect to see as far as an on-court product? And where do the Celtics stand in comparison to the rest of the East after a flurry of moves around the league radically transformed the NBA landscape as we knew it?

Celtics to ‘explore converting Sam Hauser to a standard contract’ after flurry of trade deadline deals: report

The Virginia product has been lethal from deep with the Maine Celtics.

The Boston Celtics will “will explore converting Sam Hauser to a standard contract” from his current two way deal according to Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith in a tweet coming soon after the passing of the 2022 NBA trade deadline on Thursday.

The move, precipitated by a cluster of moves by the Celtics that opened up five roster spots on the team, would help get the team to the full, 13-man minimum required by the league and reward the Virginia product for his outstanding play with the team’s G League developmental affiliate, the (Portland), Maine Celtics, where Hauser has spent the bulk of his inaugural campaign in the NBA.

The former Cavalier has been lighting it up from beyond the arc at that level, knocking down 41.2% of his shots while putting up 21.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and a steal per game with Maine.

Woj: Celtics trading Dennis Schroder, Enes Freedom, Bruno Fernando for old friend Daniel Theis

The German big man is headed back to Boston.

The Boston Celtics are trading for old friend Daniel Theis, sending back fellow German Dennis Schroder according to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Celtics had been seeking to move the veteran floor general to achieve a better roster balance with the team having four point guards (along with Marcus Smart and Payton Pritchard) on the team after dealing for San Antonio Spurs guard Derrick White. The move brings back a trusted frontcourt player for the team who should slot into the rotation with ease as the club gears up for a hopefully substantial postseason run.

The Celtics are also sending out Enes Freedom and Bruno Fernando in the trade, per Woj, but at least for the moment it is unclear if other players are coming back in the trade to Boston.

Keep checking back for more details on this developing story.

Reports: Celtics deal Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford to San Antonio Spurs for Derrick White

Boston will also send out a top-4 protected 2022 draft pick, per reports.

The Boston Celtics are reportedly trading veteran shooting guard Josh Richardson to the San Antonio Spurs for point guard Derrick White, according to The Athletic and Stadium NBA insider Shams Charania. Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe adds the details of the trade, which includes Romeo Langford for salary-matching purposes as well as a top-four protected 2022 first-round pick.

The Celtics successfully managed to rehabilitate Richardson’s value this season after a few stints with teams that were a questionable fit for the Tennessee product took some of the shine off of his game. Now, he will head to the Spurs — a team that rarely deals mid-season — for White, a 27-year-old point guard who has shown improved court vision with San Antonio this season even as his shot from deep has taken a step back.

Stay tuned to this developing story.

Woj: Boston Celtics trading Bol Bol, PJ Dozier to Orlando Magic in ‘cost-savings’ deal

The Celtics should now be under the tax and possess two open roster spots to play with.

The Boston Celtics are officially under the tax line after reportedly sending out recently-acquired PJ Dozier and Bol Bol to the Orlando Magic for a future second-round pick according to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

Both traded to Boston from the Denver Nuggets in the three-team deal that sent forward Juancho Hernangomez to the San Antonio Spurs in mid-January, the move is a salary cap-clearing trade that will also open up two roster spots the Celtics can use to take on players or sign veterans to the roster for a late-season playoff push backed by Boston’s improved play of late.

Boston now has flexibility should they wish to make additional moves before the 3 pm ET deadline arrives, and has removed leverage in any potential talks for trading Dennis Schroder of teams who would have known that Boston hoped to skirt the tax this season.

Woj: Ex-Boston Celtics forward Semi Ojeleye dealt to Los Angeles Clippers in 4-team deal

The SMU product will now be playing for the Clippers for the rest of this season.

Former Boston Celtics forward Semi Ojeleye is on his way to the Los Angeles Clippers at the 2022 NBA trade deadline as part of a four-team deal involving the Sacramento Kings getting Donte DiVincenzo, Trey Lyles and Josh Jackson, the Milwaukee Bucks Serge Ibaka, and two future second-round picks, and cash, the Clippers Rodney Hood, and Semi Ojeleye.
and the Detroit Pistons Marvin Bagley Jr., according to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

Ojeleye had joined the Bucks this summer in free agency after spending his entire career before that point with the Celtics, who drafted him out of Southern Methodist University with the 37th overall pick of the 2017 NBA draft.

He had played four seasons with Boston in a reserve role, never quite developing a consistent offensive game to match his solid defensive presence in the frontcourt, and averaged 3.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per game with the Celtics in his time with the team.
