2022 Belmont Stakes: Mo Donegal wins Belmont Stakes in Kentucky Derby rematch with Rich Strike

Mo Donegal aced the test of champions.

The test of the champions has produced another worthy victor as Mo Donegal earned a first place finish at the 2022 Belmont Stakes on Saturday in Elmont, New York.

It’s the fourth Belmont Stakes victory for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Mo Donegal got off to a middling start, hanging in the middle of the pack while We The People raced out to the lead after starting on the rail. Despite sitting in sixth place on the backstretch, Mo Donegal was able to muscle around the top of the field and gather strength down the stretch to cross the finish line in just 2:28.28.

The 1.5 mile dirt race saw just an eight horse field, but it happened to be packed with established names like Skippylongstocking, Barber Road and 2022 Kentucky Derby-winner Rich Strike.

This was Rich Strike’s first race since his historic Run for the Roses when he was added as a late entry to the field, then blazed away with the win despite 80-1 odds—the second longest ever to win the Derby.

On Saturday, Rich Strike struggled to keep up with the pace and couldn’t make a late move running in eighth almost the entire race.

Mo Donegal, who finished fifth behind Rich Strike at the Kentucky Derby will take home $800,000 of the $1.5 million purse after closing with 5-2 odds.

Bobby Flay buys into ownership of Belmont favorite after successful 2016 investment

It has worked once before.

Celebrity chef Bobby Flay bought a minority interest in the colt We the People on Monday, an investment in the current betting favorite for the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

The late purchase is a move that has paid off for Flay in the past, as he bought into eventual 2016 Belmont winner Creator just days before that year’s race. It was a moment he reflected on his press release.

“I’m thrilled to join the We the People team,” Flay said, via multiple outlets. “I have been an admirer of this colt since he started his career at the beginning of this year. I want to thank Lisa and Kenny Troutt of WinStar for giving me this exciting opportunity. Winning the 2016 Belmont with Creator will be a moment that me and my family will never forget.”

We the People had 2-1 odds to win the Belmont as of Friday afternoon. The colt has won three of four starts this year, including the Peter Pan last month – a Belmont prep race.

Flay joins an ownership group that includes WinStar Farm, a partner in the 2016 deal.

“We appreciate Bobby wanting to partner with us again,” WinStar president and CEO Elliott Walden said in a release. “He is great for the business, and a great partner.”

Belmont Stakes: 2022 post position draw results and morning line odds

Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike is back in the field, but not the early favorite

The final jewel of the Triple Crown is up for grabs this Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York as horse racing turns its attention to the 2022 Belmont Stakes.

After skipping the Preakness Stakes to prepare for the annual June event, Kentucky Derby-winner Rich Strike is back in the field and one of the favorites to win the 1.5 mile dirt race at 7-2.

It’s been a wild season for the former 80-1 longshot who stunned the world at Churchill Downs. Now he’ll get to face off against some familiar names. Though just eight horses were entered into Tuesday’s post position draw, the experience among them is nothing to take lightly.

We The People opens on the rail as the odds-on favorite at 2-1.

Barber Road and Mo Donegal will get a long-awaited rematch with Rich Strike following their battle at the Kentucky Derby. Preakness entrants Creative Minister and Skippylongstocking will try to improve on their respective third- and fifth-place finishes.

Early Voting, who won last month’s Preakness Stakes, has opted to skip the Belmont Stakes in order to prepare for the  Travers Stakes in August.

Here’s a look at the post position draw and morning line odds for the 154th running of the Belmont Stakes.
