Weight 200

Recruiting Profile

[autotag]Evan Mahaffey[/autotag] was a big get for Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry in the Class of 2022. Mahaffey was a four-star prospect according to 247Sports and among the top players in the state of Ohio. Mahaffey committed to Penn State over offers from his hometown Cincinnati Bearcats and West Virginia, among others.

Mahaffey was a part of a high school program that went 64-12 and won a Greater Cincinnati League championship over three years and he was named a finalist for 2022 Ohio Mr. Basketball. He was named the Ohio Player of the Year by Cincinnati.com.

Role in 2022-23

Evan Mahaffey will certainly be a key cog in the Penn State starting five down the line, but expect him to contribute some good quality depth off the bench in his freshman season. Mahaffey’s ability to play multiple positions should allow Micah Shrewsberry to use one of his talented freshmen in a variety of ways as needed for now, and any experience gained will benefit Mahaffey moving forward.

Camren Wynter was no stranger to handling the basketball for the Drexel Dragons. The four-year player was a three-time All-CAA player for the Dragons and was the conference’s most outstanding player in the CAA Tournament in 2021. Wynter was a key contributor for Drexel as an efficient scoring option.

Role in 2022-23

Expect a quick impact from Wynter on this Penn State roster. Wynter should pair nicely with Jalen Pickett in the starting five for the Nittany Lions and will help provide some scoring for the offense. The combination of Wynter and Pickett gives Penn State a potent guard combo to run its offense this season.

Penn State men’s basketball profile: Andrew Funk adds good bench depth through the transfer portal

Funk comes to Penn State after being a solid standout player in the Patriot League for Bucknell. Funk has plenty of experience to rely on after playing 32 games last season and being a solid contributor all around for the Bison. Funk was also a decent three-point shooter for Bucknell with 87 three-pointers made last season.

Role in 2022-23

Funk will be a valuable option off the bench for the Nittany Lions and he could get some decent playing time as well. Jalen Pickett figures to be the team’s top shooting guard, but Funk should be the first option off the bench when Pickett comes off the floor for whatever reason.

Funk could be used at other positions as well and should be counted opn to provide some three-point range off the bench. And if Penn State needs to use Funk as a starter at any point, there are certainly less optimistic options to go with on the roster.

The addition of Funk to the roster was a good one for Micah Shrewsberry as the bench depth improved in a big way.

Penn State Basketball Snapshot Profile: Jameel Brown

Freshman Jameel Brown should be expected to contribute off the bench, with a bigger role next season for Penn State basketball.

Preseason Profile: Jameel Brown

Position Guard
Year Freshman
Hometown (High School) Philadelphia, PA
(Westtown School)

Recruiting Profile

Jameel Brown is one of the top high school recruits to commit to Penn State basketball in program history, so he certainly arrives in Happy Valley with high expectations. Brown committed to Penn State over offers from Minnesota and Purdue, Shrewsberry’s former program as an assistant. It is believed Brown came down to choosing between Penn State and Purdue.

Role in 2022-23

Brown’s role will certainly be increasing in the coming years, but expect him to be a bench player with few responsibilities as a freshman this season. With plenty of veterans on the roster, Penn State may be able to allow Brown to grow a bit off the bench and in practice before tasking him with being a key player for the team next season.

Brown will also bring some flexibility to the roster as he is considered a guard that can play multiple positions. That should help allow Penn State’s coaching staff to figure out exactly what his role will be moving forward.

Role in 2022-23

Matthew O’Haren-USA TODAY Sports

Caleb Dorsey will continue to be a player coming off the bench for Penn State in the 2022-23 season. He won’t be asked to do much in that role other than eat some minutes when needed. There are other bench players that will have more of a role in the success of the team, but Dorsey likely will be seeing most of his playing time in any late minutes in games that have all but been officially decided.

Preseason Profile: PLAYER Kebba Njie

Recruiting Profile

Penn State scored one of the top recruits in program history by signing Kebba Njie in the Class of 2022. Njie was rated as a four-star recruit on the 247Sports composite rankings and a top 100 player in the nation by ESPN. He is reportedly the second highest-ranked player in program history. Njie’s recruitment was a big victory for Shrewsberry as Njie committed to Penn State over offers from Butler and Kansas State.

Role in 2022-23

Penn State fans may not have to wait too long to see Kebba Njie find his role on the team. The star freshman could quickly become a fixture in the starting lineup for Shrewsberry and the Nittany Lions. Njie is expected to be one of the top impact freshmen in the Big Ten according to 247Sports, and he will definitely be adding some needed size to the roster.

Dread may not have has career-bests in total points scored or scoring average, but he did improve his shot accuracy with a career-best in 2021-22. Penn State would love to get a few more points of Dread per game rather than have him be counted on for an average of 8 points per game or fewer.

Role in 2022-23

Myles Dread will be a main cog in the Penn State game plan. A likely fixture in the starting five, Dread will hope to be a slightly more consistent three-point threat, as he has been a bit streaky at times. Dread also had a career-best three-point shot percentage last season and that will be a big part of the game this season.

Dread started 20 of 31 games for Penn State last season, and that number should tick up this season.

Seth Lundy was one of Penn State’s most consistent players last season. He started all 30 games he played in for the Nittany Lions and he ended the season as the team’s second-leading scorer and third-leading rebounder. Lundy also was  key defensive player for the team as Shrewsberry worked  on improving the team’s overall team defense.

Role in 2022-23

It should go without much question that Seth Lundy will play a key role in the team’s plans in 2022-23. With so much experience to rely on, Lundy should be a fixture in the team’s starting five and will be relied on to connect on some three-pointers, something he was among the bets on the team at doing last season.

Lundy will also be one of the team’s leading defenders if last season was any indication, and he will serve as a good mentor to some of the newer members of the program.

Penn State Basketball Snapshot Profile: Kanye Clary

Penn State men’s basketball profile: Kanye Clary

Penn State men’s basketball is heading into its second season under head coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag], and the bar is looking to be raised as the Nittany Lions look to return to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2011. With a roster of key returning veterans and fresh new talent from the recruiting efforts of the new staff, there is a sense of optimism to rely on in the 2022-23 season.

Over the course of the preseason, will are profiling each player on the roster to help fans get acquainted with this year’s roster of Nittany Lions men’s basketball players and what kind of role each player will be taking on for Shrewsberry.

Leading us off is one of Penn State’s freshmen, guard [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag].

Preseason Profile: Kanye Clary

Position Guard
Year Freshman
Hometown (High School) Virginia Beach, VA
(Massanutten Military Academy)
Height 5-11
Weight 192

Kanye Clary was one of the key new additions to the program in Shrewsberry’s first full recruiting cycle. While most of the recruiting services rated him a three-star recruit, ESPN gave him a fourth star in their recruiting rankings. Clary scored 2,000 point sin high school between two schools, Princess Ann High School and Massanutten Military Academy.

Clary was one of the top players out of Virginia. He was also named first-team All-Tournament at the National Prep Championship in March.

Role in 2022-23

Clary won’t be a leading role player for the Nittany Lions but he should be expected to contribute. Penn State is working on getting a few newcomers ready to come off the bench and contribute to the team this season, and Clary will certainly be among the young players to keep a close eye on this season.

Expect the early part of the season to be a good opportunity to get Clary involved in the rotation, and don’t be surprised if his role increases as the year progresses.
