The Virginia alum also cast some light on what it was like to join the ball club over the offseason, what he expects to happen in the 2023 postseason, and a lot more.

The Boston Celtics and their fans have been referring to veteran floor general Malcolm Brogdon as their missing piece needed to win a banner.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to have that sort of pressure put on you? The 2023 NBA Sixth Man of the Year certainly does, and he recently sat down with NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg to talk it over.

The onetime Virginia standout also cast light on what it was like to join the club during the 2022 offseason, what he expects to happen with the team in the 2023 postseason and much more.

Three-time Sixth Man of the Year Jamal Crawford gives Malcolm Brogdon the John Havlicek Trophy

Named for the ultimate sixth man — and a Boston legend — it is fitting that a Celtics player was the first to receive this recently renamed award.

Some people call him Humble Moses. Others, The President, Uncle Malcolm or even Mookie Dew. And while nobody that we are aware of calls him the Gangster of Love (or for that matter, Maurice), without a doubt we can all call Boston Celtics reserve floor general Malcolm Brogdon the NBA’s 2023 Sixth Man of the Year.

The onetime Virginia player was presented with the award at Atlanta’s TNT Studios with the Celtics in town to take on the Atlanta Hawks for their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series. Three-time Sixth Man of the Year winner Jamal Crawford presented Brogdon with the John Havlicek award.

Named for the ultimate sixth man — and a Boston legend — it is fitting a Celtics player was the first to receive the renamed award.

Heavy Boston Celtics presence in latest Athletic NBA Players poll

The Athletic’s anonymous NBA player poll engaged 108 members of the league’s 30 rosters with their identities protected so they can feel comfortable speaking freely, and a number of Celtics made the returns.

When it comes to NBA players voting for one another in terms of major awards, the results can be a mixed bag given All-Star votes can frequently be cast for other players on their own team whether the honor is truly deserved or not.

But it is undeniable that said players also know the sport more intimately and the players who play it better than pretty much anyone else as well. So we might want to take them seriously when interpreting the results of the recent survey conducted by The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Josh Robbins. Their 2023 anonymous NBA player poll engaged 108 members of the league’s 30 rosters with their identities protected so they can feel comfortable speaking freely, and a number of Celtics made the returns.

Let’s take a look at which Boston players ended up in what categories.

Is the NBA’s new midseason tournament a good idea?

When does it start and stop, and which teams participate in it? What is at stake for the ball clubs in question, and what will motivate individual players to care about it?

By now, only the most casual NBA fans have not heard the Association is  adding a midseason tournament to the calendar as part of the changes that are part of the new collective bargaining agreement. But even fairly avid fans are often hard-pressed to explain the pertinent details of this new tournament.

When does it start and stop, and which teams participate? What is at stake for the clubs in question, and what will motivate individual players to care about it? And isn’t the season already too long?

Perhaps the most important question about it is whether the NBA’s midseason tournament is even a good idea.

Taking a swing at clarifying the midseason tourney and what it will change about the season, The Athletic’s Ryen Russillo put together a video to help us get accustomed to this mysterious new wrinkle.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to get caught up on all if the finer details.

NBA’s 50 best dunks of 2022-23 features the Boston Celtics

It probably should not surprise that the team with the No. 2 defense in 2022-23 is also the No. 6 team in the league for blocking shots.

The Boston Celtics have one of the most fearsome defensive anchors in the NBA, Robert Williams III, at their disposal to deter opposing teams from attacking within range of his ultra-athletic reach. They also have a guard who blocks more shots than most big men in the league, Derrick White.

Throw in that the club’s two star wings, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, defensive maestro Marcus Smart, and veteran big man Al Horford all being fairly good at sending errant shots into the stands, and it probably should not surprise anyone that the team with the No. 2 defense in 2022-23 is No. 6 in the league for blocked shots.

As a result, the Celtics featured prominently among the league’s most prolific rejection artists in the NBA’s top 50 blocks of the season video.

Check out the clip embedded above to see some of those blocks for yourself.

Best of Boston Celtics ball movement in the 2022-23 NBA season

A renaissance of ball movement has helped propel the team to one of the best offenses in the entire league.

For much longer than fans of the Boston Celtics likely want to remember, the biggest barrier between the Celtics and success was themselves — or more specifically, a criminally low level of ball movement on offense.

After a reckoning under former Boston head coach Ime Udoka that has continued to the present under head coach Joe Mazzulla, a renaissance of ball movement has helped propel the team to one of the best offenses in the league.

To document the well-oiled machine that is the Celtics of today, fan videographer Tomasz Kordylewski put together a comprehensive compilation of the best of Boston’s ball movement of the 2022-23 season.

Check it out for yourself while we wait for the next game of the 2023 NBA Playoffs to roll around for the Celtics.

New NBA wildest endings compilation features Boston Celtics

The Celtics have certainly seen their fair share of wild endings this season.

With scoring up around the NBA this season, the number of wild endings underscored that no lead is safe anymore. Clubs can put up too many points in a hurry.

The Boston Celtics are no exception to that, and they were on both sides of wild endings as well.

The NBA recently put together a comprehensive compilation of the wildest ends to games throughout the 2022-23 season. It runs more than two hours, and the Celtics were featured prominently.

So if you want to see some of the craziest endings to Boston’s games this season, check out the clip embedded below.

You might end up seeing one of the games where Boston was on the wrong end of the equation as we noted above, however.

Boston’s Malcolm Brogdon is mentally and physically ready for any challenge

Humble Moses is mentally and physically ready for any challenge and at just the right moment for Boston.

There had been legitimate concern about how many games veteran point guard Malcolm Brogdon would be able to play this season given his past problems staying on the floor due to recurrent if relatively minor injuries.

But in his first season with the Boston Celtics, the onetime Virginia player logged 67 games in the 2022-23 regular season, second only to his Rookie of the Year season. Humble Moses is mentally and physically ready for any challenge and at just the right moment for Boston.

To document his approach to his tenure in his new city, the Celtics put together a video about his time in “the best locker room” he’s been a part of.

Check it out for yourself in the clip embedded above.

Best of Marcus Smart with the 2022-23 Boston Celtics

Smart has been putting up 11.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, a career-high 6.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game with the Celtics in this campaign.

Even with the Flower Mound native dealing with a lingering foot injury from last season on top of the nerve issue in his neck near the end of the 2022-23 regular season, Marcus Smart has been playing some of the best basketball of his career this season with the Boston Celtics.

The onetime Oklahoma standout has been solid on defense as always, albeit admittedly a step slow due to said injury. He has averaged 11.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, a career-high 6.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game with the Celtics in this campaign.

Add another career high in effective field goal percentage as a result of Smart picking his spots much better than in the past, and the entire package has made for a significant part of his team’s contention-worthy season.

To see some of its highlights, take a look at the clip embedded below put together by fan videographer Tomasz Kordylewski.

Celtics featured in NBA’s best dunks of the 2022-23 season

Boston has been well-represented in the NBA’s official video of the top 100 dunks of the 2022-23 season.

With two players in the NBA’s upper echelon of stars, wings Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Boston Celtics have had no shortage of dramatic flushes this season.

With big man Robert Williams III looking more like his usual bouncy stuff and even deep rotation players like reserve forward Sam Hauser and veteran big man Sam Hauser showing they too have some hops to deploy in key situations, the Celtics have been dunking all over the league.

So it ought not to come as a big surprise that Boston is well-represented in the NBA’s official video of the top 100 dunks of the 2022-23 season.

Be warned, intrepid viewer, that the extended highlight reel starts out with a slam dunk ON the Celtics by Joel Embiid in a tilt with the Philadelphia 76ers.

But don’t give up on that forgettable flush — power through and you will see Jayson Tatum laying down the hammer to get the Boston flushes underway.
