How the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement affects Jaylen Brown

The Celtics star forward’s earning potential has changed as a result of the new CBA.

The NBA has tentatively agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that should have significant effects on how all 30 teams in the league operate. In particular, a number of changes are specifically designed to make teams spending heavily in pursuit of a title pay more for the privilege of hanging on to their own players.

The Boston Celtics are one of those clubs. While many of those changes will hurt Boston, there was hope the new rules on extensions might help the Celtics hang on to star forward Jaylen Brown. Currently, Boston can only give him a 120% raise on his next deal. Under the new CBA, it could offer him 140%, which would be in line with a full max contract.

But the looming potential for a supermax deal could complicate that for Boston. It is an issue Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston recently broke down for Arbella’s “Early Edition” show.

Jayson Tatum: stats: See where the Celtics star ranks in each statistical category

Tatum might not win MVP, but he has put together quite the season with Boston.

Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum may be out of the running to win this season’s Kia Most Valuable Player award, but he’s at the top or very near it in quite a few key indicators and counting stats for the 2022-23 NBA season as we rapidly approach its end.

The St. Louis native has been among the league’s most prolific scorers with very few games missed or taken off, so Tatum figures to register among the top of his elite peers in the Association as the 2023 NBA Playoffs inch closer. While it might not be enough to earn him MVO this time around, Tatum has put together an admirable body of work this season.

Let’s take a look at roughly where he will finish the season.

Al Horford thinks Derrick White is a lock for All-Defensive first team

Horford recently sung his teammate’s praises in an exclusive sit-down interview with NBC Sports Boston’s Abby Chin.

He might not be the flashiest player on the Boston Celtics’ roster, but Celtics guard Derrick White is definitely among Boston’s most important players, especially on the defensive end of the court. That quiet excellence is not missed by his teammates even if it is not always obvious how much the Colorado native adds to the Celtics’ win column.

Veteran big man Al Horford is taking note of how White has been helping Boston get it done on the court this season, and recently sung his teammate’s praises in an exclusive sit-down interview with NBC Sports Boston’s Abby Chin.

The two also talked about what it’s like when Horford plays the Philadelphia 76ers and gearing up for postseason play among other topics.

What is the difference between the good and bad versions of the Boston Celtics this season?

If you had a simple answer, you’d probably be on the Celtics’ shortlist for new assistant coaching hires.

The Boston Celtics have been the NBA version of Jekyll and Hyde this season. The team has alternated between playing like the best team in the league and playing like a .500 team stuck on the proverbial treadmill of mediocrity.

What could be behind it exactly?

If you had a simple answer, you’d probably be on the Celtics’ short list for new assistant coaching hires. But the short version is that it involves using all of the players on the court vs. devolving into an isolation-heavy, my-turn, your-turn offense-focused just on star forwards Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

The folks over at the “Hoops Digest” podcast recently tried their hands at elucidating what the difference is between bad Boston and good Celtics in the clip we have embedded below.

Check it out for yourself to see if they have their finger on the pulse of what makes Boston look like world-beaters (or beaten) on the court.

Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics: How to watch, broadcast, lineups (4/9)

The Celtics are looking to finish their current campaign with a three-game winning streak, while the Hawks are simply hoping to get back in the win column after an overtime loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 56-25 Boston Celtics will face the 41-40 Atlanta Hawks at TD Garden for their final game of the 2022-23 NBA season on this Sunday afternoon. The Celtics are looking to finish their current campaign with a three-game winning streak, while the Hawks are simply hoping to get back in the win column after an overtime loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

If you happen to be looking for a way to watch the on-court action live on cable television or a local or national online streaming service, keep reading while we get you up to speed on everything else you need to know about the game.

Let’s begin with the players who are among those listed to be available to play.

‘I’m enjoying being here,’ says Jaylen Brown of playing for the Celtics

Jaylen Brown recently gave more context to his mindset, and it is focused on winning an NBA title in Boston.

It can be more than just a distraction to have the name of one of the key players on a contending team’s name in the rumor mill — it can destabilize the work of years putting together a roster of elite, talented players capable of winning a championship.

But thankfully that has not happened to the Boston Celtics despite star forward Jaylen Brown finding himself the subject of considerable speculation after some seemingly noncommittal replies about his future playing for the storied franchise. While uncertainty regarding his future with Boston beyond the final season of his current deal remains, a series of interviews has since given more context to the Cal alum’s mindset at present.

And it is firmly focused on winning an NBA title in Boston.

Jaylen Brown wants to win a title with the Boston Celtics

The Cal alum said as much in a recent interview, but does that mean he’s returning?

With Jaylen Brown having made comments in recent interviews that made the Georgia native sound noncommittal about his future with the Boston Celtics beyond his current contract, a number of fans grew understandably worried the star forward might not be happy in Boston.

But Brown recently shed new light on his thinking about the Celtics organization if not the city they play in during an interview with ESPN’s “Keyshawn, JWill, and Max” show.

“I want to win a championship of course,” said the Georgia native when asked what he wants from his future with Boston. “I think that’s what every player and every athlete plays this game for, to win.”

Asked specifically if he wanted to do that with the Celtics, Brown replied “Absolutely! Why not? I think we have got a great opportunity right now here, so I’m looking forward to the playoffs.”

Does this mean we can bank that the former Cal standout will be back in green and white for the duration of his NBA career? Certainly not — or even that he will re-sign with the Celtics.

But if Brown is unhappy with some aspect of his tenure in the city besides the concerns he’s raised in other interviews, it isn’t showing in this exchange. Boston still needs to thread the needle of being able to offer him the sort of deal he’d sign in an organization and city that beckons him to do so.

But it seems they have put in the work in that regard, and our take on this slow dance between the organization and Brown is merely the latter doing his due diligence to get all he deserves as a star in his own right in this league.

Should we be worried about Jaylen Brown’s hand injury headed into the postseason?

His heavily bandaged hand did not exactly look great.

There were more than a few jokes going around the NBA media sphere on Friday night after it had been revealed star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown would not play for the rest of the 2022-23 regular season. The former Cal standout is sitting out as a result of slicing his hand open on a broken vase.

But after the metaphorical dust settled on his heavily bandaged hand, some analysts began to question whether Brown’s account of how his injury happened was an entirely honest one. More importantly, questions arose whether he was would be affected on the court despite the official team assessment that he should be ready for the start of the playoffs.

How worried ought we to be about Brown’s injury?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast recently linked up to talk it over on a recent short; take a look at the clip embedded above to hear their thoughts on JB’s stitched-up appendage.

Is a Boston Celtics-Miami Heat first-round series inevitable?

Might not the Hawks surprise us all and pull out the upset over a still dangerous but lesser version of a Miami squad?

While there is still a chance the Boston Celtics could find themselves facing the Atlanta Hawks and new head coach Quin Snyder in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs, it is more likely they end up playing the Miami Heat.

One of those clubs will emerge from the league’s 2023 play-in tourney with the honor of facing the second-seeded Celtics.

Might not the Hawks surprise us and stage the upset over a still dangerous Miami squad diminished by age, injury and roster position imbalance?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “A-List” podcast convened for a recent episode and shared their thoughts on the inevitability of a series between Boston and Miami.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear what they think might be coming down the postseason pike for the Celtics.

Boston Celtics will face Heat or Hawks in first round of 2023 NBA Playoffs

The Boston Celtics will find out their first round opponent on Tuesday as the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks face each other in the play-in.

The Boston Celtics‘ opponent in the first round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs has become a bit clearer as the 2022-23 regular season nears its end. The Celtics, who currently hold the second seed in the Eastern Conference standings at the time of this writing, will be facing either the Miami Heat or the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the playoffs.

Miami and Atlanta will play each other in the seventh seed vs. eighth seed play-in game this coming Tuesday, with the winner of the matchup locked in to take on Boston in round one of the postseason.

While the Hawks seem like a much easier matchup for the Celtics, a possible series against the Heat feels like poetic justice given their recent playoff history with each other.
