The top takeaways from Washington’s 17-13 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Washington Football Team picked up their first preseason win of 2021 after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 17-13 on Friday at FedEx Field.

Washington played its starters through the first quarter, with Taylor Heinicke replacing Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback at the beginning of the second quarter.

According to head coach Ron Rivera after the game, the coaching staff wanted to see a set number of plays from the first-team offense. Once they reached that number, Rivera brought in Heinicke and some of Washington’s other reserves.

Here are five takeaways from Washington’s win over the Bengals.

Washington defeats Cincinnati 17-13 in Week 2 preseason action

Washington picked up its first preseason victory with a 17-13 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Washington Football Team defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 17-13 in Week 2 of the NFL preseason on Friday.

Washington’s first-team offense got off to a slow start with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. There were dropped passes, Fitzpatrick missing a wide-open Adam Humphries in the end zone and a Cam Sims fumble that set up Cincinnati’s first three points.

However, Washington’s offense would settle down, especially once backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke came in. Heinicke completed 11 of 13 attempts for 80 yards. He also used his legs to make plays.

Washington’s star of the night for the second consecutive week was undrafted rookie running back Jaret Patterson. Patterson once again led Washington with 71 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 35 yards and returned a kickoff 37 yards.

Washington’s defense was outstanding, holding the Bengals to just 214 total yards, including only 103 passing yards.

Washington improves to 1-1 in the preseason and plays the Baltimore Ravens in the preseason finale next week.

WATCH: Chase Young is hyped watching rookie running back Jaret Patterson

Chase Young is hyped watching his friend, rookie Jaret Patterson, run wild.

Washington defensive end Chase Young and undrafted rookie running back Jaret Patterson go way back.

The reigning NFL defensive rookie of the year and Patterson have known one another since middle school and were teammates for one season in high school before Young moved on to DeMatha.

“Since middle school, we’ve been tight. That bond, we went to Pallotti together, experiencing the grind. It kind of just clicked. Even when he went to DeMatha, we were still tight,” Patterson said after signing with Washington, per Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Sports Washington.

Patterson credited Young with putting a good word in for him with Washington when he was signed as an undrafted free agent.

In his NFL debut last week against New England, Patterson led Washington in both receiving and rushing.

So, what would he do for an encore in his first game at FedEx Field against the Cincinnati Bengals?

Patterson would carry the football 16 times for 71 yards with a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 25 yards. And, Patterson even returned one kick for 37 yards.

His longtime friend, Young, was loving it.

Patterson went from battling for a roster spot to media and fans now debating if he needs to play next week.

Washington found a gem in Patterson.

Washington leads Cincinnati 6-3 at halftime in preseason action

Washington leads the Bengals, 6-3, at halftime in Week 2 of the preseason.

The Washington Football Team leads the Cincinnati Bengals, 6-3, at halftime in Week 2 of preseason action.

Washington took the ball first and started fast, as quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick found tight end Logan Thomas for a big play. Unfortunately for the Football Team, the drive stalled and Washington was forced to punt.

Cincinnati jumped on the scoreboard first when kicker Evan McPherson connected from 37 yards out to give the Bengals a 3-0 lead. Cincinnati started the drive in good field position due to a Washington turnover.

Washington began to move the ball more consistently in the second quarter when quarterback Taylor Heinicke took over under center. Heinicke completed nine of 11 passes for 62 yards.

Fitzpatrick completed seven of 13 passes for 96 yards.

Running back Antonio Gibson rushed for 28 yards in the first half, while rookie Jaret Patterson ran for 24 yards.

All six of Washington’s points came on two Dustin Hopkins’ field goals. So, that was a bit of good news for head coach Ron Rivera after Hopkins struggled last week.

Cincinnati will receive the ball to open the second half.

WATCH: Rhamondre Stevenson continues fantastic preseason for the Patriots

Former Oklahoma Sooners running back Rhamondre Stevenson continued his strong preseason with another two touchdowns in the New England Patriots 35-0 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

In the New England Patriots 35-0 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, former Oklahoma Sooners Running Back Rhamondre Stevenson continued his stellar preseason.

In the win, he carried the ball 15 times for 66 yards and two touchdowns. He also added on a catch for eight yards.

It was the second straight preseason game in which Stevenson scored two touchdowns. In week one of the preseason, he carried the ball 10 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns, including a 91 yard run for a score against the Washington Football Team.

That makes four touchdowns for Stevenson in two games, three of which have come in goalline situations.

Rhamondre Stevenson reminds of a more agile LaGarrette Blount. Big and physical but with more agility and elusiveness. The vision and change of direction he put on display on Thursday night is exactly why he was one of the best value picks in the draft. Stevenson isn’t simply a power back. He’s got light feet that help him to make people miss in the open field.

Though he did have a fumble on the night, it was yet again a strong performance for the second straight week, and that’s what you want to see from rookies. The guys who end up contributing on Sundays are the ones who can maintain consistent performances throughout training camp and the preseason.

So far, Rhamondre Stevenson has been one of the best players in the NFL this preseason. With one more game to go, he’s making a case to be a part of the Patriots running back rotation earlier than expected.

Here are some of the highlights — and one lowlight –from the former Rhamondre Stevenson’s great night.

Washington tight end Sammis Reyes is in concussion protocol

This is unfortunate timing for Sammis Reyes as he is battling for a roster spot.

The Washington Football Team will be without one of their two rookie tight ends in Friday’s preseason home opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

On Wednesday, head coach Ron Rivera said that Sammis Reyes was in concussion protocol and would miss the game.

Reyes is the second Washington tight end to enter concussion protocol this week, joining Temarrick Hemingway. This is certainly an unfortunate setback for Reyes, who is competing to earn a roster spot as one of the backup tight ends to starter Logan Thomas.

In his debut last week against the New England Patriots, Reyes caught two passes for 25 yards. While he didn’t make either catch cleanly, he did an outstanding job getting his feet down on one reception. Reyes showed his physicality in the game, earning Rivera’s praise.

Washington faces the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 18 in its final preseason game.
