Baltimore defeats Washington 37-3 in preseason finale

The Baltimore Ravens have now won 20 preseason games in a row after defeating Washington, 37-3.

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the Washington Football Team, 37-3, in the preseason finale on Saturday at FedEx Field.

Washington chose to sit all of its starters and went with Kyle Allen as the starting quarterback. Baltimore started Lamar Jackson, who played in one possession for the Ravens.

In Jackson’s lone possession, he drove Baltimore deep into Washington territory, but the defense sacked him twice to force a field-goal attempt, which it missed.

That was the highlight of the night for Washington’s backup defense.

Baltimore’s backup quarterback Tyler Huntley became the MVP of the preseason by completing 24 of 33 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown.

Allen completed 10 of 22 passes for 100 yards in one half of action. Steven Montez played the second half for Washington, completing five of 10 passes for 28 yards.

Washington rushed for 45 yards on 14 attempts, as the Ravens dominated time of possession, holding the ball for almost 42 minutes.

Washington will open the regular season on Sept. 12 when it hosts the Los Angeles Chargers at FedEx Field.

Baltimore leads Washington, 23-3, at halftime in the preseason finale for both teams.

The Baltimore Ravens lead the Washington Football Team, 23-3, at halftime in the preseason finale for both teams.

Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson started the game for Baltimore and got the Ravens deep into Washington territory immediately. However, Washington’s defense full of young backups sacked Jackson twice and forced a field goal attempt. The Ravens missed.

Baltimore brought out Tyler Huntley on the next drive and Washington has yet to stop him. Huntley has completed 14 of 17 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown.

Washington’s offense couldn’t get much going. Quarterback Kyle Allen completed 10 of 22 passes for 100 yards. He did have a few drops, though.

Wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden has four receptions for 39 yards, while Dax Milne has two catches for 33 yards.

Washington’s defense has yet to force a punt. Meanwhile, Tress Way has punted four times.

As of now, Baltimore’s 19-game preseason winning streak looks safe, making head coach John Harbaugh happy.

WATCH: Washington receiver Dax Milne make terrific catch along the sideline

There hasn’t been a lot to cheer for in the first half of the Washington Football Team’s final preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

There hasn’t been a lot to cheer for in the first half of the Washington Football Team’s final preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens jumped out to a 16-0 lead, with Washington barely getting anything going on offense.

However, late in the second quarter, Washington finally moved past midfield when quarterback Kyle Allen found rookie wide receiver Dax Milne for a 26-yard connection along the sideline.

It was an impressive throw and catch.

Unfortunately for Washington, the offense sputtered again shortly thereafter, and the team brought on kicker Dustin Hopkins for a 55-yard field goal attempt.

He missed, and the Ravens got the ball in good field position.

In the first half, Milne leads Washington with two receptions for 33 yards. Antonio Gandy-Golden has been impressive, too, catching three passes for 27 yards.

That’s about it for Washington’s offense in the first half.

Last-minute news and notes before Washington’s preseason finale

Some last-minute news and notes before Washington’s preseason finale against the Ravens.

The Washington Football Team will be without their top two quarterbacks against the Baltimore Ravens in the preseason finale.  Head coach Ron Rivera will not play Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke, instead going with Kyle Allen and Steven Montez.

Apparently, Washington will be without most of its starters.

Here are all of Washington’s starters, per Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic.

One item of note is Peyton Barber starting at running back. You’d think this would be a time for the coaching staff to evaluate rookie Jaret Patterson further.

Is this the latest sign that Patterson’s spot is secure?

Washington is going with Antonio Gandy-Golden, Dax Milne and DeAndre Carter at wide receiver. These three are all fighting for the final one — or two — spots on the roster at receiver.

Another interesting spot is at defensive end. William Bradley-King and Daniel Wise will get the first crack at impressing the coaching staff. Shaka Toney should also see plenty of time, too.

Washington and Baltimore kick off at 6 p.m. EDT.

Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke will not play for Washington in preseason finale

Washington will roll with Kyle Allen and Steven Montez in the final preseason game.

The Washington Football Team will not play either of their top quarterbacks in the preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens. Both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke will receive the night off, per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.

It’s no surprise Fitzpatrick will not play. Fitzpatrick didn’t take any of the reps at Thursday’s practice in Ashburn, and it was not due to injury. Apparently, head coach Ron Rivera had seen enough of Fitzpatrick in the preseason and deemed him ready for the regular season.

Allen, who missed the first preseason game when he aggravated his surgically repaired ankle, made his debut last week against the Bengals. Montez played in the first game against New England but did not play last week against Cincinnati.

Washington and the Baltimore Ravens will kick off at 6 p.m. EDT at FedEx Field.

The Jets will face off against the Eagles in their preseason finale. Here’s everything you need to watch and listen to the game.

The Jets wrap up their preseason against the Eagles at MetLife Stadium on Friday night.

Much like the first two weeks of exhibition play, New York’s matchup with Philadelphia is a prime evaluation opportunity for Robert Saleh and his coaching staff. Gang Green’s starters will play no more than a half, according to Saleh, meaning those fighting for a roster spot will receive valuable reps before roster cuts on Tuesday.

Here is how you can watch and listen to the Jets’ preseason finale.

Washington releases tight end Temarrick Hemingway

Washington has five tight ends on the roster for the preseason finale.

In a surprise move, the Washington Football Team released tight end Temarrick Hemingway on Thursday.

It’s not necessarily a surprise Washington released Hemingway, but more of when he was released. Washington just cut five players to get to the league-mandated 80 players on Tuesday.

After releasing Hemingway, Washington re-signed center Jon Toth, who was released on Tuesday.

Hemingway was entering his sixth NFL season in 2021 and spent the 2019 season with head coach Ron Rivera and the Carolina Panthers. He spent time going back and forth between Washington’s practice squad and active roster in 2020, appearing in eight games, catching one pass for 10 yards.

Hemingway began the preseason in a good position to make the WFT roster. However, he struggled badly against New England and then suffered a concussion missing some time. Other players moved past him on the depth chart.

Washington now has five tight ends on the roster for the final preseason game: Logan Thomas, John Bates, Sammis Reyes, Caleb Wilson and Ricky Seals-Jones.

Washington hosts Baltimore on Saturday evening at FedEx Field.

Every NFL team must trim their roster to 53 players by Tuesday at 4 p.m. EDT.

The Touchdown Wire Podcast: Doug and Mark talk quarterbacks!

As the 2021 NFL preseason nears its end, Doug Farrar and Mark Schofield discuss quarterback situations around the NFL.

We’re getting ready for the final week of the NFL preseason, which means that it’s not yet time to get into game previews. Instead, on this episode of the Touchdown Wire podcast, Doug Farrar and Mark Schofield went deep on quarterback situations around the league — how the five first-round rookies are faring, and the six teams that are stacked at just about every position, and questionable at the most important spot.

Among those topics discussed:

  • Why Trey Lance’s fastball might be tied to some diagnostic issues;
  • What the heck is going on in Chicago with Andy Dalton and Justin Fields (Hint: IT MAKES NO SENSE).
  • Why the Jaguars might be on the verge of ruining Trevor Lawrence’s early potential;
  • How the Jets are doing all the right things to make Zach Wilson comfortable, and what that looks like on the field;
  • And what Mac Jones still needs to prove.

Doug and Mark also discuss the quarterback dramas in Denver, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, New England, Miami, and Washington — six teams with playoff potential and TBD quarterback futures.

Here’s the Jags’ unofficial depth chart for their third preseason game vs. the Cowboys

The Jags’ unofficial depth chart was released earlier this week, and though the QB1 role was established afterward, there still are some battles that need to be settled against the Cowboys.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster has been trimmed down to 80 players, and with that being the case, they released a new unofficial depth chart for their last preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. Once that game is over, the Jags will no longer need an unofficial depth chart in 2021 because each team will have to trim their roster down to its final state of 53 players.

Aside from a certain No. 1 overall pick being named the starting quarterback for the 2021 season, there were a few other changes made on the depth chart, although none of them were major. Despite that, though, Sunday’s game at AT&T Stadium will be an important one for the players on the roster as Urban Meyer said the available starters will play. The game will also have big-time implications for all the bubble players as they will be fighting to make the final 53-man roster or impress any other teams watching.

The updated unofficial depth charts for the offensive, defensive and special teams units are as follows:

Takeaways and notes

  • The unofficial depth chart came out a day before Trevor Lawrence was named the Jags’ starting quarterback, so it didn’t have him in the QB1 slot. We’ve updated that part of the chart, but the rest outside the quarterbacks column remains unofficial.
  • Meyer said the team now has a competition brewing for the No. 2 quarterback role between Gardner Minshew II and C.J. Beathard.
  • The Jags added offensive tackle, Badara Traore, off waivers and cut right tackle Garrett McGhin on Wednesday. Traore was previously listed as a left tackle with the Chicago Bears last week, so we listed him at the LT3 spot, although he could end up playing right tackle in McGhin’s place.
  • With Travis Etienne now on injured reserve, Dare Ogunbowale moved up to the RB3 spot, and the running backs behind him were all moved up a spot as well.
  • Cornerbacks Corey Straughter and Lorenzo Burns were both move up a spot with the Jags waiving Luq Barcoo.
  • There still is a four-way contest listed at strong safety, proving that the group is deep. Meyer praised several players at the position on Wednesday, including Jarrod Wilson and Andre Cisco. He also singled out free safety Daniel Thomas for his sound performance on special teams.
  • The Jags have receiver Tavon Austin now listed as the No. 2 punt returner now. Straughter was listed as the No. 3 but is no longer in the column.
  • Chris Claybrooks is listed as the second kick returner, and Pharoh Cooper was moved back a spot behind him.

5 takeaways from day 18 of Washington training camp

Washington is now four days away from its preseason finale against the Ravens. Here are five takeaways from Tuesday’s practice.

Washington was back on the field Tuesday for day 18 of training camp. With the preseason finale just days away, head coach Ron Rivera is treating the entire week as a normal game week in the regular season.

Washington faces the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, who enter the game on a 19-game preseason winning streak.

While Rivera respects the Ravens, he didn’t appear too impressed with their preseason winning streak.

The coaches are in the middle of preparing for Washington’s Week 1 opponent, the Los Angeles Chargers, while also working on getting multiple players plenty of action in this weekend’s game against the Ravens.

Here are five takeaways from Tuesday’s practice.
