PSA: Your Kentucky Derby Medina Spirit bet will stand even if horse is stripped of title

Whew.

If you bet a bunch of cash on Medina Spirit — who won the 2021 Kentucky Derby but who is under investigation after a positive drug test for betamethasone and could be stripped of his title if a second positive confirms it — don’t worry about having to give it back.

For one, there’s no way Churchill Downs or any other sports book to track down each and every bettor and ask for the money back, mostly because that would be hilarious (“Uh, hey Charles, can we have our $30 back? Appreciate it!”) and it’s possible everyone spent their winnings. For another, this is just how it is: once the race is officially called, it’s all over.

As the New York Times wrote, it’s true not just for situations like horse racing:

This statute of limitations applies to other kinds of sports wagering. When Reggie Bush returned his 2005 Heisman Trophy five years later in the wake of a recruiting scandal, none of those who bet on him to win it had to return their profits. Entire teams can be stripped of their moments of triumph. Bettors cannot.

Yes, Mandaloun — who finished second — would technically be the winner, but if there are legal proceedings and such, that could take a while.

Here’s a quote from BetMGM data analyst John Ewing via Yahoo Sports that should make you feel even better:

“All bets will stand as settled. The race result has already been determined official and paid. Disqualifications from positive drug tests will not change the results.”

That’s that! Your bet is safe.

Aaron Rodgers really did wear a ‘Turd Ferguson’ tag at the Kentucky Derby

So good.

I know the 2021 Kentucky Derby is behind us, but we’ve got to revisit Aaron Rodgers’ Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Yes, we’ve seen all the jokes about what the Green Bay Packers QB and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers counterpart Tom Brady were wearing. The thing is — Rodgers wore a little nametag on his suit, and that little pin read: “Turd Ferguson.”

It was visible while he was speaking with a TwinSpires reporter, and while he didn’t talk about the drama with the Packers, a lot of people noticed the reference to Jeopardy! (actually, it’s to a classic Saturday Night Live skit sending up Celebrity Jeopardy! from 1999, but the Rodgers-Jeopardy! connection is obviously there).

Rodgers really likes to have fun.

Bravo, Aaron.

Sports fans had so many jokes about Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers at the Kentucky Derby

So good.

One of the most reliable aspects about NFL Twitter is that whenever Tom Brady decides to show off his appreciation for high fashion in public, fans will come in strong with jokes.

He could be at the Met Gala or on his expensive yacht — fans will have takes.

Saturday’s running of the 147th Kentucky Derby was no exception.

Brady was in attendance to watch Medina Spirit win the Derby, and his outfit made it look like he took time off from framing Roger Rabbit to watch horse racing. That getup along with Aaron Rodgers’ casual look had fans making plenty of jokes about the quarterbacks.

Well done, Twitter.

Here’s how much you would’ve made with a $1 bet on 2021 Kentucky Derby superfecta

A near $10,000 payout could have been yours!

The 2021 Kentucky Derby is officially in the books, as are the final payouts for the $1 superfecta bet.

On Saturday, Medina Spirit took home the title after finishing a thrilling race, giving another win to racehorse trainer Bob Baffert, his seventh at the Kentucky Derby. It was a close race, but Medina Spirit wasn’t really pushed much until the final turn and was leading the entire time.

In order to win the $1 superfecta bet, you would have had to get Medina Spirit, Mandaloun, Hot Rod Charlie, and Essential Quality placed in order from first place to fourth. And if you did? A $9,456.40 payout could be yours!

That near $10,000 payout isn’t nearly as lucrative as payouts for the superfecta have been in the past, but it’s not an insignificant amount either!

Not a bad bet, if you made it!

Kentucky Derby 2021 updated odds as of the morning of the race

A look at the odds as of Saturday morning.

It’s Kentucky Derby day at Churchill Downs, with the 2021 edition of the Run for the Roses just hours away.

That means the odds since Tuesday’s morning line after the post position draw have changed, and if you’re someone who doesn’t just bet on the best horse names, you’re obviously going to be keeping an eye on this all day.

Please note that it’s more than likely these odds will change up to the start of the race, but maybe this gives you an idea of betting patterns and such.

So here are the updated odds and post position order as of Saturday morning around 8 AM ET:

Every 2021 Kentucky Derby horse name, ranked

Who to bet on based on name.

If you’re looking for betting advice for the 2021 Kentucky Derby, you have come to the wrong place.

What I’m here to do is to continue a tradition here at For The Win, and that’s to rank the horses contending for the win at Churchill Downs based on their names, which is how I — and many casual bettors — pick out their favorite thoroughbred.

What’s the criteria? Some combination of prestige, originality, and … well, it’s got to sound like a good horse name. Basically, it’s extremely unscientific and we like to have some fun here.

So here’s our sixth annual edition of this list:

Kentucky Derby: 2021 post position draw results and morning line odds

Here’s the order and the odds.

The 2021 Kentucky Derby is coming on Saturday, and on Tuesday morning, we learned where each of the 20 thoroughbreds competing in the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs will start.

Essential Quality, the favorite at 2-1 and trained by Brad Cox, will be at the No. 14 post. Hot Rod Charlie (8-1) will be at No. 9 and Rock Your World will be next to the favorite at No. 15 and starts out with 5-1 odds.

Here’s a look at each of the horses, their trainers, owners and jockeys, along with their morning line odds after the post position draw that took place on Tuesday morning:

Mattress Mack is about to bet so much money on the Kentucky Derby

He’s back and spending tons of money.

Furniture store owner Jim McIngvale — that’s “Mattress Mack” to you — has bet huge sums on so many big sports events.

There was the $13 million loss he took on the Houston Astros (but that was a hedge bet that worked out in his favor after he said if the Astros won, he’d refund a lot of money to customers), and he threw down $3.46 million on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers +3.5 in the Super Bowl, which definitely worked out.

Per the Las Vegas Review-Journal, he’s going to bet A TON on Essential Quality, the presumed favorite to win the 2021 Kentucky Derby. How much are we talking here? Here’s the quote:

McIngvale, 70, said he’ll wager “$2 million plus, maybe $3 million, maybe $4 million” on Essential Quality, the 5-2 favorite, to win the first leg of horse racing’s triple crown. …

“The favorite has won six of the last seven Kentucky Derbies run on the first Saturday in May. So the customers have an 85 percent chance of winning,” Mack said. “My dilemma as a gambler is how to feed money into the pari-mutuel pool without killing the odds.”

That’s right, Mattress Mack himself could be responsible for moving the odds on a horse. That’s what happens when you bet absurd amounts of money!
