Bucky Brooks pegs Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray as his 2020 NFL MVP

NFL analyst Bucky Brooks pegs Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray his 2020 NFL MVP

Former NFL player and scout Bucky Brooks is all-in on Kyler Murray.

Brooks, a current analyst for NFL.com, named Murray his 2020 NFL MVP.

He cited that, while it is early for predictions, it only adds to his confidence in the Cardinals’ quarterback. Murray was 2019’s Offensive Rookie of the Year, something each of the past MVP winners, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, have won.

Murray joined free agent Cam Newton as the only rookie quarterbacks to throw for 3,500 yards and rush for 500. He led all rookies in passing yards and completions, and finished third best all-time on rookie completions begind Carson Wentz and fellow Sooner Sam Bradford.

“Think about that.” Brooks wrote in an article on NFL.com. “Murray put up historic numbers on an offense that was adapting to a former college head coach/play-caller transitioning to the pro game while managing a roster littered with holes along the offensive line and limited in playmakers on the perimeter. If that’s not enough of a challenge, the electric QB1 needed to compensate for a leaky defense that finished last in yards allowed and 28th in points allowed. How do you like that for context?”

The Cardinals are currently slated to begin their regular season on September 13, barring any cancellations or postponements due to the coronavirus.

Texans QB Deshaun Watson’s MVP odds got worse after 2020 NFL Draft

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson’s odds to win NFL MVP worsened after the 2020 NFL Draft.

Deshaun Watson has a bumpy road to winning league MVP for the 2020 season.

According to BetMGM, the Houston Texans franchise quarterback had the fourth-highest odds in the NFL to win league MVP in 2020 as of a week after Super Bowl LIV. The two-time Pro Bowler had 12 to 1 odds.

However, odds-makers have allowed Watson to fall further thanks to the offseason wheeling and dealing from Trader Bill. The former 2017 first-round pick’s odds to win NFL MVP are 25 to 1, tied with Aaron Rodgers, Kyler Murray, and Carson Wentz for the seventh-highest in the league. Even the Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott has better odds at 20 to 1, which are the same odds as Drew Brees.

Watson’s odds taking a tumble are due to the moves coach and general manager Bill O’Brien made over the offseason. On March 16, it was announced the Texans were trading three-time All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for running back David Johnson and a couple of draft picks. That was the biggest hit to Watson’s odds.

Like with the Texans not representing in Gil Brandt’s top-10 quarterback-receiver duos despite having Watson healthy and under center, it is the same with Watson’s MVP odds. There are too many variables at receiver to have any confidence in the Texans’ passing game. Sure, Brandin Cooks thrives with the deep ball, a pass Watson can throw very well, but is the former Los Angeles Ram over his concussion issues? Will Fuller takes the top off defenses, but can he stay healthy for a significant portion of the season to help Houston vie for the No. 1 seed?

Patrick Mahomes is the favorite at 3.5 to 1 with Russell Wilson second with 6.5 to 1 odds. Lamar Jackson has 7 to 1 odds, and Tom Brady has 14 to 1 odds before Brees and Prescott tie with fifth-best odds. The highest non-quarterback was New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley with 40 to 1 odds, tied with Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan for the 11th-highest in the NFL.

Dak Prescott‘s 2019 stats

Prescott had the best season of his career in 2019, throwing for career-highs in yards (4,902) and touchdowns (30) with a 99.7 percent passer rating. Prescott did see a drop in his rushing production, only gaining 277 yards (52 carries) on the ground. But it was a worthwhile tradeoff as Prescott became one of the league’s best passers.

Is Dak Prescott worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

In his first season under new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Prescott saw a massive surge in production. He became one of the best deep-ball passers in the NFL, averaging 9.3 air yards per pass attempt. With Mike McCarthy now on board as the team’s head coach, it’s fair to expect the Cowboys to continue to throw the ball early and often.

For Prescott to win this award, he would likely need to repeat his 2019 stat totals, and the Cowboys would need to be a legit contender in the NFC. But with the Cowboys still having one of the most talented offenses in the league, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they needed to score even more after losing a significant amount of talent on defense.

Prescott probably won’t win the 2020 NFL MVP, but it’s not hard to see the pathway for success for the fifth-year quarterback. But at 20-1 odds, Prescott isn’t a bad bet considering his recent caliber of play and the talent around him. Look for Prescott to continue to build off his strong 2019 numbers, but to fall short of taking home this honor.

Lamar Jackson has third-best odds of winning back-to-back MVP awards

After winning the NFL MVP award for the 2019 season, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson seems like a good bet to win again next year

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson had a season to remember last year. Even though Baltimore didn’t go to the Super Bowl, Jackson put up one of the best overall seasons for a quarterback, breaking the single-season rushing record while leading the league in touchdown passes. Jackson broke several franchise and NFL records en route to winning the MVP award in just his second season in the league.

According to BetMGM, Jackson has +600 odds of winning the MVP award next season as well. He’s third on the list behind Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. For those new to sports betting, a $100 bet would pay out $600 in profit.

It’s impressive to be that high on the list at any point, but it’s even more impressive when you consider that only four players have won an MVP award in back-to-back seasons since 1957 (Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Joe Montana and Jim Brown). The last person to do that was Manning in 2008 and 2009.

However, with Baltimore having some cap space to spend and expected to have nine picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, they should be able to add talent around Jackson and their top-ranked offense this offseason. Barring a complete collapse next season, Jackson should find himself in the running for the award. When combining his rushing and passing acumen, it seems like Jackson would be a good bet.
