USA Today projects ACC’s records, Two CFP teams?

The USA Today’s Paul Myerberg details how he sees the ACC playing out this season.

The season is just around the corner and the USA Today’s Paul Myerberg wondered if the ACC could potentially put two teams into the College Football Playoffs.

The two teams Myerberg is referencing are Clemson and your Fighting Irish. He proposes that if the after the two teams meet in their regular season matchup in November they “could meet again for the conference championship in December holding just one combined loss. In that scenario, the case will be made that even the loser deserves a spot among the final top four.”

It’s hard to argue with his logic, but if either of the teams finish undefeated while the other team has two losses, it’s hard to imagine having a two loss team make the CFP. If Notre Dame and Clemson split their regular season and potential ACC Championship games, then yes, both teams would have a very solid argument that they deserve to be in the four team tournament.

Myerberg then projects the ACC’s individual team records, as the Irish finish second behind Clemson, with a 9-2 record. Clemson, in his projections, goes undefeated and would get the number one overall seed in the CFP. The Irish be left at the altar as the 5th team, barely missing their second playoff berth in the last 3 years.

Hopefully Myerberg is incorrect in his assessment of the season playing out in the ACC. The ideal situation would see the Irish beat Clemson twice and leave no doubt for the CFP committee to include them in the final four. Hell, a split of the games would work, as that should be enough this year for both teams to make it. Let’s hope it’s one of those two and not how Myerberg see’s the season playing out.

ACC to make Final, Final decision on Fall Football Today

The ACC has a meeting set up for this afternoon to discuss fall football once again.

The ripple effects of the Big Ten and Pac-12 cancelling their fall football seasons continue as the ACC presidents will have yet another meeting to decide if going forward with the season is the correct thing to do.

This tweet is a bit deceiving however, as this meeting was already set up to get an update from their medical advisors. There seems like no need to worry about the ACC joining the Big Ten and Pac-12 in their cancellation of fall athletics.

More on this ACC presidents meeting today:
– it was previously scheduled
– presidents are expecting to receive an official medical report from advisory board
– there is optimism/positivity that ACC will continue on current course

There will be news coming out of this meeting however, but it will most like just involve a conversation on how each program is doing with their testing and tracing. As we know, the Irish Football team had 9 players miss the first scheduled practice for precautionary reasons after two players tested positive. The Notre Dame student body should be given some kudos as well, as they have been tested prior to their return to campus earlier this week with some very encouraging results.

With the student body having exceptional rates on their return to campus, it gives the football team plenty of hope that the community is doing their part to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. The ACC announced its schedule model for the conference season. It’s a ten-game season – with Notre Dame included – with five home games, five away games, and with each team missing four other ACC teams.

The divisions are gone for this season, and each team will get to play one non-conference game. The weekly schedule is coming out later.

5. ACC Football Schedule Announced. What It Means For You And Your College Football Life

The ACC thinks it’s playing college football this season. Start from there, be happy about it, and enjoy the moment.

It could’ve all gone the other way, and we could be talking right now about how the ACC and Notre Dame are cancelling the campaign.

Oh sure, it could all go kablooey at any moment, and it all might be totally delusional, but take a deep breath and pretend things are sort of normal.

There could be college football this fall, and if it happens, it could be fantastic.

The ACC model has five home games, five away games, Notre Dame is in the mix, and everyone gets one non-conference game. Fine. Great.

From the ACC announcement, here are the other key parts …

Every team has two open dates. That might not be enough time if a team has to take 14 days off, and there’s not a whole lot of wiggle room for rescheduling.

All the TV revenue is split. More on this in a moment, but Notre Dame gets to be part of the ACC fun as long as it gives the ACC a piece of the pie.

The ACC Championship will be between the two top teams based on conference winning percentage. For this year, with no divisions, the non-Clemson teams from the Atlantic have a real hope of playing for the ACC title.

As the fallout continues from the Big Ten and Pac-12 officially dropping conference games from the 2020 college football season, initial steps are taking place as to the fallout.

As we’ve discussed on Fighting Irish Wire since the Big Ten news broke Thursday afternoon, the ACC appears to be Notre Dame’s life raft if 2020 only sees conference games played nationally.

The University of Miami (FL) will lose their contest against Michigan State and according to their athletic director, would be plenty excited to replace the Spartans with Notre Dame.

“If the opportunity for a match up with ND is presented, we would be thrilled to have that game added to our 2020 schedule.” Blake James – University of Miami Athletic Director to the Miami Herald

Miami was one of our guesses as a replacement if Notre Dame were to play an all-ACC schedule.

In terms of name brand you can’t ask for much more than Miami, even if they’re coming off a 6-7 campaign in 2019. They’ve added quarterback D’Eriq King from Houston who brings stability to a position that has been an issue of late for the Hurricanes.

Notre Dame and Miami have not met since November of 2017 in what ended in disaster for the Fighting Irish, a 41-8 defeat.

Notre Dame and Miami are currently set to resume the old “Catholics vs. Convicts” rivalry in 2024 and 2025 as part of the ACC/Notre Dame scheduling agreement.

QB Trevor Lawrence, Jr. Clemson
He was the No. 1, superstar, can’t-miss, this-is-the-franchise-guy-who-might-possibly-be-better-than-Deshuan-Watson recruit for the program in 2018, and in his time all he’s been able to do is lead the team to two ACC championships, two national title appearances, one national championship, and with a fairly decent 29-1 record in the 30 games he has been a part of.

And now, he’s embracing the role of college football legend, Face of the Franchise, and all-around leader to a grander scale both on and off the field. Thanks to the silly rules that make a player wait for three years after high school to be eligible for the NFL Draft, he’s still around for at least one more year.

Banged up as a freshman, he busted out last season with 54 tackles, with 15.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss – by the way, Young finished with 46 sacks with 16.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss – as one of the nation’s top and steadiest producers. And now he has Temple transfer Quincy Roche on the other side to take the heat off.
