Boston star Jayson Tatum on his 15-year journey to the NBA

“Getting drafted was the best day of my life,” said Tatum.

Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum recently was the guest on the premier episode of Kevin Hart‘s ninth season of his “Cold As Balls” show, and the pair got into Tatum’s background playing the sport among several other topics discussed on the season debut.

Tatum took us on a journey through his basketball career, starting as a young prospect with big dreams and eventually achieving his goal of becoming a star in the league. The St. Louis native opened up about his experience at the 2017 NBA draft and spoke about the hard work and dedication he invested to reach where he is today.

“Getting drafted was the best day of my life,” he explained.

On this day: Reggie Lewis, Jayson Tatum, Semi Ojeleye, Brad Lohaus drafted

On this day, the Boston Celtics drafted Reggie Lewis, Jayson Tatum, Semi Ojeleye, and Brad Lohaus, and lost Brandon Hunter to the Charlotte Hornets.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team would select four players of note in the 2017 NBA draft, held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. While the Celtics had held the top overall pick in the draft, team president Danny Ainge would use it to trade back for the third overall pick, correctly gambling he could still get his targeted prospect, Jayson Tatum.

Tatum, a 6-foot-8 small forward out of Duke, was drafted third overall after Ainge completed the deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, who used the top overall pick on point guard Markelle Fultz out of Washington, the Los Angeles Lakers using the second overall pick on point guard Lonzo Ball.

Vindicating Ainge, Tatum has gone on to become one of the top ten players in the league, racking up accolades at a historic rate.

Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, and Justin Jackson shift spots in 2017 re-draft

Three Celtics saw their original draft position change in this re-draft.

The 2017 NBA draft was one to remember for fans of the Boston Celtics and Jayson Tatum in particular, as then-President of Basketball Operation Danny Ainge fleeced the Philadelphia 76ers by trading back so they could draft guard Markelle Fultz with the top overall pick of the draft, taking the St. Louis native instead.

We all know how that proposition ended up working out for each side of the deal, and imagine the Sixers would love a mulligan on that trade. But where would everyone else involved end up being drafted if the big day was done over knowing what we know now?

Frank Urbina over at our sister site Hoops Hype put together a re-draft of the 2017 class — let’s look at the new draft position for three current Celtics in their estimation.

Star Celtics forward Jayson Tatum clocks in as top player in 2007 NBA draft class per HoopsHype’s global rating

Tatum is in a league of his own as Global rating pegs the St. Louis native as the fourth-best player in the NBA so far this season.

NBA analyst Alberto De Roa of HoopsHype, our sister site, put together a new metric he dubbed global rating.

“(The metric) combines players’ and teams’ statistics to rank players according to their productivity on the court.”

It also factors in the number of contests a given player has been unavailable for in a season (for a more detailed breakdown, check this out).

For the 2022-23 NBA season so far, De Roa has not only used global rating to compare NBA players, but also how each draft class remaining in the league stacks up against its peers.

The highest-rated and most recently drafted Boston Celtics player to make De Roa’s draft class assessment is former Duke standout Jayson Tatum. The star Celtics forward clockes in as the top overall player from his 2017 NBA draft class.

Ahead of players such as (in order) Lauri Markannen, Donovan Mitchell, OG Anunoby, Jarret Allen and De’Aaron Fox, Tatum is in a league of his own. Global rating pegs the St. Louis native as the fourth-best player in the NBA this season.

Kevin McHale, Jayson Tatum cited as Boston Celtics ‘traded NBA draft picks that turned into gold’

The Boston duo were one of 13 examples cited of draft picks that had been traded for a big payoff later on in a new HoopsHype article.

It is always a gamble to trade a draft pick projected to be a valuable lottery pick with little or no protections on it, and in many cases, such a move can come back to bite the team that did it pretty badly.

Among the 30 teams of today’s NBA, analyst Frank Urbina of HoopsHype fame assembled a list of 13 examples of such a trade taking place with the Celtics occupying two of those slots. The deals in question led to Boston picking up Hall of Fame big man Kevin McHale and All-NBA small forward Jayson Tatum (drafted by McHale’s teammate and former team president Danny Ainge, no less).

Let’s see what Urbina had to say about the two diamonds in the rough.

2017 NBA redraft has Sixers taking Jayson Tatum over Markelle Fultz

In a re-draft of 2017, the Philadelphia 76ers take Jayson Tatum with the No. 1 overall pick instead of Markelle Fultz.

Looking back at the 2017 NBA draft, the Philadelphia 76ers made a big move with the rival Boston Celtics to move up to the No. 1 pick, and they selected Markelle Fultz out of Washington. The expectation was Fultz would join Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons to form a Big Three.

Instead, Fultz suffered a rash of injuries ,and he played a grand total of 33 games across two seasons for the Sixers before he was traded to the Orlando Magic at the deadline in 2019. With the Magic, he has begun to find his footing, but again, he has been hit with multiple injuries that are holding him back.

In a redraft of 2017 performed by Bleacher Report, the Sixers take Jayson Tatum with the first pick with Fultz sliding to the 19th pick which belonged to the Atlanta Hawks.

B/R on the Tatum pick for the Sixers:

Tatum is coming off back-to-back seasons with at least 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game. Over his last three postseason appearances, he’s made two conference finals and averaged 26.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 3.0 threes, 1.1 blocks and 1.1 steals while shooting 38.5 percent from three.

Those absurd numbers are proof that Tatum is already far more than just a No. 1 scorer. What gives him a chance to compete for MVPs, though, is his rapid ascent to elite defense.

One has to wonder how the Sixers would have looked with Tatum joining Embiid and Simmons rather than Fultz, but, alas, Tatum is with the Celtics and Boston is a legitimate threat in the Eastern Conference after coming off an appearance in the NBA Finals.

Regrading 2017 NBA draft lottery prospects: The Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum at No. 3

Not only did Boston strike gold with Tatum — they traded back in the draft to do it.

It can be a little hard to believe in retrospect that the 2017 NBA draft did not have star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum going first overall, but he did not. Aand that is not even the most peculiar aspect of the top of that draft class. On top of not going first, the St. Louis native was actually picked by the Celtics after team president Danny Ainge traded back in the draft from No. 1 to No. 3 to grab Tatum after it became clear the Philadelphia 76ers were focused on Markelle Fultz instead.

How did that gamble pay off for Ainge and company? Most of you reading this can probably guess by virtue of your interest alone, but to put everything in a more neutral perspective, the folks over at the Hoops reference channel have assembled a draft regrade of the 2017 class, with Tatum of course near the top.

Watch the clip embedded below to hear how they grade the pick for Boston and see if you agree with their assessment.

What are the 5 biggest Celtics trades made during the NBA draft?

The Boston Celtics have made some hugely impactful trades during the NBA draft. Check out the miraculous story behind some of these deals.

The NBA draft is all about roster design. There are a lot of different strategies out there, but let’s stick with what legendary Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach once offered: “They said you have to use your five best players but I found you win with the five who fit together the best.”

With that frame, the draft offers a tantalizing number of opportunities. Sure, you can select the best available player and hope he grows with your system. But fortune favors the bold — the NBA draft is a chance to really swing for the fences and bring in the right player. A smart trade on draft night can change everything.

Boston, unsurprisingly, has a history of moving and shaking far beyond the limited frame of their own specific pick. Following the leadership of Auerbach, the Celtics’ NBA draft trade history is a rich and storied one. As we’ll see, some of the franchise’s best players landed in green by way of a draft-day trade. Let’s discuss.

Lonzo Ball selected No. 4 in Blecher Report 2017 NBA re-draft

See why Lonzo fell down in Bleacher Report’s 2017 NBA re-draft.

Re-draft’s are a fun way to truly analyze the strength or weakness of a draft class and see where team’s selected a future bust for a future star.

Bleacher Report recently ran through a re-draft for the 2017 NBA draft, where Celtics star Jayson Tatum jumped up to the No. 1 overall pick to the Philadelphia 76ers.

For new Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball, he was selected with the No. 4 pick to the Phoenix Suns, moving down two slots from his actual draft position to the Los Angeles Lakers with the No. 2 pick, which selected Jazz star Donovan Mitchell in the re-draft.

Andy Bailey of B/R explains:

“For the first two years of his career, the almost constant refrain for analysis of Lonzo Ball went something like this: If only he could shoot.

Pretty much every other box was checked, though. At 6’6″, Ball could defend multiple positions. He was one of the game’s best hit-ahead passers. His vision was way better than his experience level suggested it should be. He was even a plus rebounder for a guard.

If only he could shoot.

Then, following a trade to the New Orleans Pelicans, Ball seemingly rectified that issue. In his two seasons with the Pelicans, Ball attempted 7.2 threes per game and shot 37.6 percent from three.”
