Packers will play Chiefs in Kansas City for 17th regular season game in 2021

The Packers and Chiefs will face off in the 17th regular season game in 2021.

The 17th regular-season game is officially confirmed for the 2021 NFL season.

On Tuesday, league owners approved what the NFL is calling an “enhanced season structure” that will add a 17th game to the regular season for all teams, starting next season. Under the new format, the 17th game will feature NFC teams playing AFC teams based on division and finish within the division during the previous season.

The new schedule has the Green Bay Packers playing the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium for next season’s 17th game. The NFC North will play the AFC West in 2021, and both the Packers and Chiefs won their respective divisions last season.

The Packers last played the Chiefs in 2019. Kansas City has won the AFC during each of the last two seasons.

The matchup could provide a titanic quarterback battle between Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes.

Elsewhere in the NFC North, the Chicago Bears will play the Las Vegas Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings will play the Los Angeles Chargers, and the Detroit Lions will play the Denver Broncos.

The NFL has played 16 regular-season games per team since 1978.

The official schedule will be released later this year.

Chiefs to host Packers in 2021’s new 17th regular-season game

We’re finally going to get the Patrick Mahomes vs. Aaron Rodgers matchup that we deserve.

NFL owners have officially voted on Tuesday to approve a 17-game regular-season schedule and a three-game preseason beginning in the 2021 season.

Reports back in December signaled that a 17th regular-season game was coming in order to help offset revenue losses from a 2020 season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Team owners met virtually to ratify the proposal and make it so for the 2021 season and beyond. That means there will officially be 272 regular-season games in 2021.

So who are the Chiefs set to play during the 17th game and where is it set to be played? Well, it’s set to be an interconference matchup between AFC and NFC teams. The AFC West will play the NFC North in 2021. Where the Chiefs finished in the standings in 2020 is what will determine the specific matchup. As the winner of the division, they’ll face the winner of the NFC North, The Green Bay Packers.

Check it out:

As for who gets to host the game the AFC teams will play host to the 17th game in 2021. NFC teams will play host in 2022, and then they’ll continue to rotate. We predicted as much back when this news first arrived in December. This will probably be what they do until they add an 18th regular-season game, of course.

With a bit of luck, fans will finally get the matchup between Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers that they were deprived of in 2019. Mahomes, of course, was dealing with a kneecap injury at the time and Matt Moore started the game in his place. This should be one of the marquee matchups to come from the additional games and if it lives up to the early hype, it’ll signal a job well done by the NFL.

Panthers expected to visit Texans in extra 17th game being added to 2021 schedule

The NFL is expected to officially announce that a 17th game will be added to the schedule this week, according to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN.

The NFL is expected to officially announce that a 17th game will be added to the schedule this week, according to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN.

For the Carolina Panthers, that means they will be visiting the Houston Texans at some point during the regular season. Here is a look at all of the extra matchups that will be squeezed into the schedule, per Field Yates.

Usually most fans aren’t eager to get in line and watch a 5-11 team take on a 4-12 team, but this makes for an interesting matchup on all sorts of levels.

The question for both franchises at the moment is the same: who will be their starting quarterback next season?

On paper, if the game were today Teddy Bridgewater would be QB1 for Carolina and Deshaun Watson would start for Houston. There’s a very real possibility both will be playing for different teams in 2021, though.

Bridgewater has been the subject of trade speculation and reports for months after he bombed in the second half of last season. The Panthers tried to trade him to the Detroit Lions in a package for Matthew Stafford but were unable to. The San Francisco 49ers were also among teams that have called about Bridgewater before they made their big move up to No. 3 overall this week, ensuring they’ll be drafting their next quarterback instead of dealing for a veteran.

The biggest name that’s been attached to the Panthers is of course Watson, who has ascended to become one of the game’s top-three QBs. Carolina has been reported to be heavily interested – even obsessed – in dealing for him. ESPN has even gone so far as to predict that Watson will be playing for them next season.

That was five weeks and an eternity ago, though.

Watson has since been accused of sexual assault and harrassment by at least 16 women in a series of civil lawsuits filed in Houston. Their attorney Tony Buzbee claims 20 have been filed. Watson has denied the allegations and hired Rusty Hardin to defend him.

Despite Watson’s legal jeopardy, several teams around the NFL still want him. The latest that we’ve heard from the Athletic on that score is that the Panthers are “monitoring the situation,” but are counted among them.

Chiefs’ 2021 home and away opponents set

With the winner of the AFC South being determined in Week 17, the Chiefs’ opponents for the 2021 season have officially been set.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ home and away opponents for the 2021 NFL season have been finalized.

The 2021 NFL schedule won’t officially be revealed until sometime in April, so we don’t have all the details on dates, times, and when the games will be played yet. However, now that the winner of the AFC South has been determined, the Chiefs’ opponents for next year are officially set. That includes the newly-introduced 17th regular-season opponent.

Take a look at those opponents and our reaction down below:

Report: Chiefs will face Packers in 2021’s new 17th regular-season game

We now know the Chiefs’ opponent for an expanded regular season in 2021.

The NFL recently agreed to expand the 2021 regular season to include a 17th game to help offset the revenue loss from a 2020 season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. That means fans are due for 272 games in 2021, up from the typical 256 regular-season games in 2020.

One of the biggest questions regarding a 17th game has been about who the game would be played between. Would it be an extra division matchup, an in-conference opponent or a non-conference game?  Now, MMQB’s Albert Breer has provided some clarity regarding that 17th opponent.

According to Breer, the 17th game will be an inter-conference game against an opponent of like-standing in their respective division. That means, as the winners of the AFC West, the Chiefs would face another division winner. Breer says the AFC West will be matched up against the NFC North in 2021. The NFC North division title this year has already been clinched by the Green Bay Packers, so that’s who Kansas City will play in 2021.

This could potentially be a Super Bowl rematch for the Chiefs and Packers. They’re both considered betting favorites in their respective conferences to win Super Bowl LV. They also both happen to have the top records in the league with Green Bay at 12-3 and Kansas City at 14-1. Even if these teams don’t face off in the Super Bowl, it’ll still be a highly anticipated matchup. Fans were deprived of a game featuring Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers in 2019 due to the knee injury suffered by Mahomes. Now, the stars could align for both quarterbacks to finally meet on the gridiron. We can even call it the “State Farm Bowl.”

What’s still not clear is whether this will be a road game or a home game. The expectation is that conferences will rotate, meaning all AFC teams or all NFC teams would be the home or away opponents in 2021. We also don’t yet know what the inter-conference rotation will look like in 2022, but we can assume it’ll be another NFC division as part of a rotation, similar to the full inter-conference crossover that takes place every season.
