Strength, ferocity in pass coverage convinced Vikings that Mekhi Blackmon was the right choice

.@TheVikingsWire evaluated Mekhi Blackmon and saw what we did at #USC: Blackmon doesn’t back down in pass coverage. He can win on an island.

Mekhi Blackmon should certainly be seen as an overachiever at the 2023 NFL draft. Most analysts and experts felt he would be a Day 3 pick. He went on Day 2. Many evaluators gave him a fifth, sixth, or seventh-round grade. Blackmon went in the third round. How does someone overachieve like this?

Being aggressive, fearless, and detail-oriented — that’s how.

Vikings Wire looked at Blackmon, sized him up, and arrived at a few conclusions about the USC cornerback.

Here’s a short excerpt:

“At USC, Blackmon held his own against wide receivers in man coverage, flipping his hips and using his athleticism to track with wide receivers.

“While Blackmon’s technique isn’t perfect, he’s constantly trying to get in the right position, which helps him stay in the play. There were very few times on tape that Blackmon was entirely out of position, which is half the battle in the NFL. Even if he struggles with the finer techniques, Blackmon will contribute immediately at the next level.”
