Will Tom Herman avoid history repeating itself?
In 2010 the Longhorns went on the road to defeat the No. 5 Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Nebraska. Prior to the win on Saturday, that was the last time Texas went on the road to beat a top ten ranked team. The Longhorns would be ranked No. 22 after beating the Huskers and faced an unranked opponent the next week at home.
The Longhorns would ultimately lose that game 28-21 to the Iowa State Cyclones. This season feels eerily similar to that 2010 season. In both seasons the Longhorns defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders prior to a two-game skid. They would lose a game at home before losing in Dallas during the Red River Shootout. Both seasons also featured a victory over a top six team in the nation to improve their record to 4-2.
The game following the big win was the let down. If history does indeed repeat then Texas will lose this game and the three following. The similarities don’t stop with the top six victory. They both include games against Iowa State at home and a road game against Kansas State.
There is a weird caveat to this storyline, Tom Herman was on the winning staff for the game. He was the offensive coordinator for Iowa State. So in a way if that story repeats itself then the Longhorns should win by having Herman on the winning staff for this game.
