Stock up, stock down following Bills’ win over the Chargers

The Buffalo Bills beat the Chargers in an ugly 27-17 win.

Stock down

Josh Allen

It was a rough performance from Josh Allen against the Chargers, where he completed 75% percent of his passes, but only for 157 yards. Allen never looked comfortable in the pocket, and he was holding onto the ball for far too long. When Allen was holding onto the ball it usually led to a Joey Bosa sack, or a bad decision.

Speaking of bad decisions, Allen had two turnovers. Let’s look at those.

His first one was a fumble. He initially fumbled the snap, tried to pick up the ball, fumbled that, which ended up in the lap of Bosa. If Allen just initially fell on the ball, it wouldn’t have been a lost fumble.

His second turnover was a very ugly interception. He was getting pressured in the pocket, and threw up a hopeful ball towards Stefon Diggs. The ball floated towards his target, but Michael Davis, the Chargers defensive back, plucked the ball out of the air for the easy interception.

Ed Oliver

What is the role of Ed Oliver on this Bills defense? Is he supposed to stop the run? Or is he supposed the pressure the quarterback? Because he hasn’t done well at either so far throughout his career in Buffalo. When watching Oliver trying to stop the run, he usually gets outmuscled by his matchup, and becomes a non-factor. Oliver isn’t consistent at reaching the quarterback either.

His stat line against the Chargers reflected that, he had just three tackles, and one sack. A poor performance from Oliver. The biggest blemish was a pair of silly penalties on one drive.

The offensive line

The Bills offensive line was pathetic trying to protect their quarterback against a weakened Los Angeles defensive front. The Chargers still had Bosa, and credit to their defensive staff for moving him around the defensive line to exploit one-on-one matchups, but the Bills were pathetic against him. Bosa started the game facing Daryl Williams, and Bosa abused that matchup.

Bosa moved to the opposite side of the line and worked over Dion Dawkins, who also took multiple penalties. His final sack came when Williams simply didn’t block him. Bosa ended the day with three sacks, and five quarterback hits and that fumble recovery.
