Since Steve Nash was named head coach of the Nets, the only assistant coach Brooklyn has confirmed is Jacque Vaughn. Even then, Vaughn could be on the move if the Pacers are granted permission to interview the Nets assistant for the head coaching opening in Indiana.
Nash reportedly reached out to his old Dallas Mavericks teammate, Dirk Nowitzki, about coming to Brooklyn, but that’s not happening as of now.
Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Phil Handy has also been linked to the Nets as an assistant coaching candidate, after having his name thrown in the ring as a possible head coaching candidate for Brooklyn.
Turns out, Handy may not be the only one to lose out on the Nets’ head job but also be considered for Nash’s staff.
Shams Charania of Stadium indicated on “Inside the Association” the Nets will look at both Handy and Jeff Van Gundy “closely.”
The former New York Knicks and Houston Rockets head coach hasn’t been on an NBA bench since 2007. However, Van Gundy has been a member of Team USA’s coaching staff since 2017.
