Since taking the reins as the Golden State Warriors head coach in 2014, Steve Kerr has helped implement one of the most recognizable styles of play in the history of the NBA. The Warriors were early adopters of the 3-point pace and space movement that helped usher in a new era of NBA basketball.
Even as teams have adjusted, Kerr has continued to innovate to keep the Warriors ahead of the curve. Now, it would appear Kerr is looking to bring some of that innovation to Team USA. During a recent interview with The Athletic’s Joe Vardon, Kerr noted how he’s looking to implement some of the Warriors’ offensive actions an philosophies.
“We’re not really looking to set up the same shots that we would get for Steph or Klay, but we’re (using) similar actions to get floor spacing, to get balance, to attack certain areas of the floor,” Kerr said. “We’re keeping it simple, but we’re trying to execute it really well.”
Team USA’s roster is full of athleticism and rim pressure. Anthony Edwards and Paolo Banchero are at the forefront of the team’s offensive approach, while Jalen Brunson will keep the offense ticking (as will Tyrese Haliburton.)
With such a difference in roster construction, Kerr’s system will certainly need to adapt. However, with Erik Spoelstra as his main assistant and a rotation full of high-level talent, Kerr will have the perfect platform to tweak his usual schemes and perhaps come back to training camp with some fresh new ideas for the Warriors to work on ahead of next season.
