Stephen Curry breaks Ray Allen’s NBA record for career 3-pointers

Move over Ray Allen, the NBA has a new career leader in 3-point field goals.

Golden State Warriors star guard Stephen Curry made NBA history on the league’s grandest stage Tuesday night.

Curry broke the league record for most career 3-pointers in the first quarter of the Warriors’ game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The shot gave Curry 2,974 successful 3-pointers as a professional, eclipsing the previous mark set by Hall of Fame marksman Ray Allen.

Curry reached the mark much faster than Allen did. Allen played in 1,300 career NBA games. Curry set a new record in his 789th career game.

Allen has held the record since Feb. 10, 2011, when he passed former Indiana Pacers star Reggie Miller as a member of the Boston Celtics.

Both Allen and Miller, who provided commentary for TNT’s television broadcast, were in attendance for the historic moment. The game was stopped for several minutes to commemorate the milestone, and Allen congratulated Curry.

It’s not the first notable game Curry has played at Madison Square Garden. He scored 54 points against the Knicks in a 2013 game at the venue, one of 10 career games with at least 50 points for the Warriors guard.

Curry is a two-time NBA MVP and two-time league scoring champion. He has led the league in 3-pointers six times and free-throw percentage four times.
