Steph Curry is building a new playground in Oakland in partnership with CarMax Foundation and KaBoom!

Steph Curry joined Warriors Wire for a few questions about his new “Call Your Shot” campaign with CarMax.

Whether it’s building initiatives with his family foundation (Eat. Learn. Play.) to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic or pushing voter registration around the election, Steph Curry has stayed active throughout the Golden State Warriors’ extended offseason.

Before the Warriors’ 2020-21 regular-season opener against the Brooklyn Nets, the Curry led Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation has partnered with KaBoom! and the CarMax Foundation to build a playspace at Franklin Elementary School in Oakland.

The two-time Most Valuable Player will also be the latest NBA player to join CarMax’s “Call Your Shot” campaign. The Golden State point guard will follow his brother Seth Curry and several other NBA players with a Shoot Your Shot commercial.

Can you tell me a little bit about your relationship with CarMax and what you’re doing with your foundation Eat. Learn. Play and KaBoom?

My relationship with CarMax and the CarMax Foundation originally started through me and my wife’s foundation, Eat.Learn.Play out of our shared commitment to support the community. Before this Call Your Shot campaign, we were partnering up and working with another organization called KaBoom! who renovated and builds playground structures and safe places for kids to play — and they do it at a very high level.

We were joining forces to show up at Franklin Elementary School in Oakland to basically renovate their entire playground and their garden, not only to renovate it and create this opportunity for the kids, but to let the community and those kids lead in terms of the decision making of how they wanted their playground to be and what’s important to them to build some energy and excitement around that.

There’s a lot of shared values and interest between Eat. Learn. Play., myself, my wife and the CarMax Foundation. In terms of doing that amazing work in the community and have some fun in the process with this Call Your Shot campaign. Hopefully, people will enjoy it.

Is a goal to be a little better than your brother’s “Call Your Shot” spot?

Absolutely, competition is always there. He set a very high bar — so we will see.

Speaking about competition — to turn back quickly to the Orlando Bubble, was there a favorite moment watching from home?

There wasn’t really a favorite moment. More so just the fact basketball was able to be played during a safe manner while we’re still dealing with this pandemic. I was just proud of the entire league and all the players that were down there that put an amazing product on the floor. As a fan of basketball, it was awesome to watch.

My brother was down there too. It was fun to watch his games. My favorite moment as a family was when we got to be virtual fans for a game — it was Luka’s [Doncic] game-winner. We were virtual fans for that game, so that was probably my favorite moment.

With the work you’re foundation is doing with KaBoom and the CarMax Foundation — what’s that moment going to be like when you’re able to open the playgrounds back up for kids to be back playing at?

I think the most exciting part will be bringing some type of joy during this entire pandemic because from the kid’s experience, having their social interactions, their time on school property and their normal routine — none of us as adults ever had to experience of going through that. They just have something to look forward to and something they can have their DNA infused throughout. And just to know that there are people and organizations and brands, like CarMax and Eat. Learn. Play. just looking out for them in some way, shape or form.

Hopefully, that gives them a sense of confidence and hope. This is a lot for anybody to digest, the times that we’re in right now. So, if they can come back to the Franklin campus when it’s safe to do so and enjoy that and know that there is a lot of people looking out for them — that means a lot.
