While the Cleveland Browns are dealing with some roster attrition due to COVID-19 issues, Sunday’s opponent at FirstEnergy Stadium is scaling back the roster voluntarily.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Steelers will not play three other perennial Pro Bowlers in Week 17. EDGE T.J. Watt, defensive lineman Cameron Heyward and center Maurkice Pouncey will join starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the sidelines instead of playing against the Browns. All four are healthy enough to play but will sit out.
Sitting Watt, the front-runner for NFL Defensive Player of the Year, is a massive boon for the Browns offense. Cleveland QB Baker Mayfield was asked multiple questions about Watt during press conferences this week and his reverence and respect for the All-Pro came through in his responses.
Cleveland needs to win the game to clinch a postseason berth. Pittsburgh has already locked up the AFC North crown and cannot earn a bye in the Wild Card round.
